Missouri loses its head coach to Tulsa and is now looking at a DII coach to replace him. What is so bad about that job? NCAA Tournament 5 out of last 6 years, Elite Eight in 08-09.

Guess I am not too smart but is this sarcasm about the things that I have said about Preston Murphy leaving? Is that your point here?

Don't worry ramster, if it was personal I'd put your name on it. It's the general sentiment of the board that I was responding sarcastically to. Life will go on and we will be fine.

No problem RoadyJay, but I'll say that the posters who say that things will be fine without Preston bring people like me to repeating what I believe.RoadyJay wrote:Don't worry ramster, if it was personal I'd put your name on it. It goes both ways on the Board. To be honest I thought the reaction to Preston departing would have been stronger than it has been, especially from some posters who have praised him frequently over the years.
But I agree life will go on and time will tell.

Yeah, Ollie, obviously, has proven he can coach on the college level, but he hasn't developed the gravitas he needs to gain NBAer's respect. Not sure about Calipari, either.

Cal already bombed in the NBA.
Guys like Cal and Pitino belong in college, where they
can cajole kids.
NBA players don't care about the motivational aspects of what
Cal or Pitino bring.
Plus, they all make more money.

Why not? He played in the NBA for 13 years, and even captained one of his squads.Rhody74 wrote:Yeah, Ollie, obviously, has proven he can coach on the college level, but he hasn't developed the gravitas he needs to gain NBAer's respect. Not sure about Calipari, either.
He knows the ins-and-outs of the rigors of NBA life, as he was a journeyman -- always just making a roster -- for thirteen years, fighting for a job. NBAers respect that, especially the so-called "stars."

Re: RUMORS: Shaka Smart to Marquette? (and other Coach moves
Jason Kidd just walked into a coaching job, rumor is that Derek Fisher may do the same thing. NBA players clearly don't care if a guy proves himself at the college level, as some of the most accomplished college coaches have been complete failures in the NBA. Ollie may have what it takes to be successful there, but if he doesn't, a few more years in Storrs wouldn't give him the "gravitas."
I'd be shocked if he left UConn, absolutely shocked.

Re: RUMORS: Shaka Smart to Marquette? (and other Coach moves
A few things. Anyone remember Pitino with the Knicks? Check out those two years. And then look at the Knicks before that. He also had some NBA bench experience. Sure, these guys are better suited for the college game. But, the NBA is the highest level, these guys all have egos, and someone like Cal would basically double his salary if he went. Not only that, but wouldn't you just get sick and tired of the recruiting game? Kissing the ring of 16 and 17 year olds?
As for NBA gravitas, did Erik Spoelstra have it? Lawrence Frank a few years back? Does Brad Stevens? It's a player's league so, unless you are Phil Jackson or Pat Riley, your background isn't a big deal.

I feel like people tend to underestimate the significance of this. Say what you want about Karl Hobbs & Glen Miller's HC resumes, but I'm sure their combined experience was invaluable to Ollie.rodfromcranston wrote:Not to mention, Ollie walked into a staff with former D-1 head coaches

Wojo has no such makeup on his staff at MU.

Serious experience to hlep Ollie.

Re: RUMORS: Shaka Smart to Marquette? (and other Coach moves
Ollie had been working as a part-time player slash mentor to younger players in his last couple of years in the NBA, and it didn't really surprise anyone when he transitioned to coaching. Unless he has a weird fallout at the college level, he can probably get an NBA head coaching job whenever he wants it, and he's probably not going to jump unless he likes the situation. Meaning, I doubt he'll be the next coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.
The retreads like Calipari and Pitino are different to me, in that I'm not sure why they would want to go back to the NBA. Calipari, he only got one shot, so maybe he wants to do a sort of Pete Carroll thing to just prove he can do it. And I'm not sure why an NBA team would be interested in hiring in Pitino.

Good. When three starters leave a program, there's usually a reason.
Robinson won at Brown with Glen Miller's players.
Overrated, and under performing at Oregon State.

Actually, he looked just like William Forsythe in Out For Justice.
I used to watch the film and imagine Steven Seagal was doing
what he did to the Richie Madano character at the end, to Jerry D.
"Who killed Bobby Lupo? Where's Richie Madano?"

Good for Bob:

He will receive an annual salary of $100,000 in the first year, with a $5,000 increase in each of the next two years, and a $10,000 increase in the fourth year, bringing his annual salary to $120,000, effective July 1, 2017.

The base salary at Maine was revealed with the hiring of RIC's Bob Walsh:
Year 1 - $100,000
Year 2 - $105,000
Year 3 - $110,000
Year 4 - $120,000
This does not include perks but I can't imagine the bonus and outside income potential is great for hoops at Maine.

Re: RUMORS: Shaka Smart to Marquette? (and other Coach moves
An Insider article that grades the new coaching hires.
http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-college ... hires-2014
Rhode Island relevant:
Maine
Hire: Bob Walsh -- He's a former Providence assistant who has led Rhode Island College to eight straight NCAA tournament appearances, six consecutive conference titles and a pair of Sweet 16 appearances. Walsh is a quality coach who should also be able to recruit, but this is a tough, tough job.
Grade: B+
Boston College
Hire: Jim Christian -- If I were BC athletic director Brad Bates, I would have put a four-year contract with a $10 million buyout on the table to Syracuse coach-in-waiting Mike Hopkins. However, Bates -- with the help of Eddie Fogler (search firm) -- tabbed Christian, which was a major shocker. Christian is a good coach and has hired a couple of high-profile assistants, and he will look to upgrade the talent in Chestnut Hill.
