I'm watching Kentucky/FL. I'm thinking Toppin might have been able to help us this year.

I don't hate this take at all...ramster wrote: ↑3 years agoMy guess is Cox was unlucky that the 5 guys were granted waivers - oddly enough.NYGFan_Section208 wrote: ↑3 years agoAgree, if there's credit to be given for staying out of COVID trouble, then they should certainly get that.steveystuds06 wrote: ↑3 years ago
Cox and the players deserve a ton of credit for never having any Covid breaks all season. Great job by Cox in that department...
That being said, We have to be one of the luckiest teams in the country to get everyone eligible after Cox lost most of our roster. We would have had a Jerry D type of season if Cox didn't catch a major break. I hope Thorr considers that when deciding if Cox should come back next year. I'm just happy we know our talent level. I would have gone into next season thinking Betrand was an all-A10 guard after reading some of the comments on here. I think he could be a nice piece, but we completely overhype players, and I'm never falling for that again.
I maybe question the lucky-ness though of getting everyone eligible. If they had not got everyone eligible, then what? Would the record have been that much different? Without all/any transfers, would the expectations have been much different from what has actually happened? Would it have been different enough to matter? Would upside have maybe kept us from the 12 man rotation debacle if only 1 or 2 got approved? ....will never know
Who knows, but Cox would very likely not have as hot a seat as he has now from fans.

I hope he’s a lottery pick, so I can laugh all the posters who said it was a bad move and he’d develop the same here.

And because we didn't have a pause we had more practice time than many teams, including a good portion of our conference mates, and yet we got worse as the season went on. That's damning of the coachingNYGFan_Section208 wrote: ↑3 years agoHe did get a gi-normous break compared to most...not only did he get 5 transfers immediately available...there was no real negative impact to scheduling, when for lots of other teams, there was. If anything, the pandemic gave them as much upside opportunity scheduling as we've seen here in a long time. They just didn't take advantage of it.ramster wrote: ↑3 years agoThat is not my question. Of course the pandemic impacted. My question is how did that impact URI differently from the other 350 schools?
It seems the pandemic keeps coming up as an excuse for URI. How was URI impacted for better or for worse vs the other 350 teams? Or just for the other 13 A10 teams?
I could say Cox got a humongous break from the Covid because the NCAA granted 5 waivers to URI so 5 transfers could play immediately. He was at a greater advantage since he had 5 players in waiting?
True?

Is he running Cluess' system at Bryant? If so, he wouldn't be a good candidate here, that system works in smaller conferences but always fizzles on bigger stages. If not, then yes he might be intriguingsteveystuds06 wrote: ↑3 years agoI was told that Grasso would be a horrible candidate to consider once Cox is gone. I'll say it again. Has two more home games against Mt St Mary and with a single win will clinch the #1 seed which would guarantee all tourney games in Smithfield (where they are undefeated on the season). Currently have an overall record of 14-5 that includes at win at UMass (a team URI lost to twice).

I wasted the day watching parts of old basketball games (happy to report that Rhody still beats VCU to win the 2017 A10 tournament), and it’s amazing how easily used to new things I get- it looked weird to see coaches in suits. Seeing crowds was nice, though.

Re: Games of interest - Rest of Season
We've been consistently bad for a while now., not counting an 11 minute stretch.
We were volatile earlier this year.
If Dayton plays bad, we could win. That's the shot.

Rutgers loses by 21 at lowly Nebraska tonight.
Rutgers was a Top 15 team early in the season.
Worse yet, Nebraska had their top scorer,Teddy Allen, leave the team this past weekend. Allen scored 41 points in a 3 point loss to Penn State last week.
Yet Nebraska played a great game tonight.

We can only hope. But we all know that when it comes down to a Cartel team with a so-so resume and a non-Cartel team with a good resume, obvious nepotism hire Dan Gavitt will make sure the committee bails out the Cartel. And when said Cartel team is the execrable Dook, it’s a lock.

They’re on the outside looking in. But definitely can still get in with a few ACC tourney game wins. Just takes the right teams to lose above them.

Re: Games of interest - Rest of Season
I know no one here has any interest in the Horizon league. However, I feel last night’s quarterfinals results are notable. A triple OT game, two OT games and a one point regulation win decided by a putback at the buzzer.
I think this March will be even wilder than usual. Who knows? That could even include a conference championship decided by forfeit because a team has Covid issues: I hope not.

Too much time without a game with the last being last Wednesday night Feb 24 vs Xavier. Prior to that was UCONN Feb 16
Bad schedule to try to build momentum going into the BE Tournament
