The deadline to submit paperwork for immediate eligibility without needing a waiver is Thursday. The paperwork needs to be submitted by then but they may not be officially entered into the portal until the following week. Obviously you can still enter after that but you need a waiverSmartyBarrett wrote: ↑1 year agoI believe it's the deadline to actually get into the portal.

This is who Fanta was talking about, I think.
In all seriousness, all the best to Parnell. Hope he lands a scholly somewhere.

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
I normally agree with you BAR and I agree with your general point. But I am not sure this has anything to do with Parnell. My understanding of the portal process is you submit your name and when you do that it is a public database that many people if not all have access to. I think they can do this and ask that other coaches do not contact them unless contacted by the player (not sure it stops their name from being publicized in the portal, not sure about that) but that is usually only done if someone knows where they are transferring to. I think is the formal way now to announce that you are transferring and there is no other way of doing it. The difference is now there is a formal database that someone can look at that has every transfer listed. I think Parnell is just letting coaches including D2 coaches as well that he is looking for a new school. If I am incorrect and he actually made a formal announcement, I stand corrected.bigappleram wrote: ↑1 year ago The walk ons entering the portal and making formal announcements is peak 2023. You're right Diffs, and while Parnell didn't do it I have seen some more robust announcements that are cringe worthy.4Diffs wrote: ↑1 year agoI normally agree with you BAR and I agree with your general point. He would be another solid 1-year loaner.
He was a previous 4* top 100 recruit.
Only played 13 games (started 9) freshman year at SLU (2018-2019) averaged 9 pts.

Yeah second thought, I would probably pass on him.
I think he has a long history of discipline problems.
Has already been to 4 schools including Juco and only played in 35 Div.1 games.

I agree, too bad waste of talent.
I think out of HS he was ranked #75 and Kansas was involved.
Decided to stay home at SLU, which didn't work out well.

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
Agreed, Bred.
And I will add for two reasons (primary reasons amongst other reasons), imho: more NIL $’s to spend; relevancy.
There are other reasons, of course, like playing time, resources, etc.
These things give programs like SJU the ability to get good quicker, I think. But, we will get better - like we always have - it will take longer and be done differently, however, by adapting and overcoming.

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
Not really. I just didn’t mention him directly because I don’t consider him primary. But he is important - as any other coach with his natty’s, track-record of success and experience would be. Other coaches with his stature - which I believe SJU could attract - would do what he is doing, IMO.
I don’t have an issue with your suggestion. I just don’t give him personally the same weight.

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
NIL is the ultimate boogeyman. SJU's resources besides renting out MSG are considered amongst the worst in the BE.
Did he reinvigorate Repole and the SJU boosters, yes of course. Easier to fundraise for NIL, sure.
But the reason they will turn around and be good next year is only bc of Pitino. Those other things are table stakes.

Put Jay Wright there or another natty level coach and it would be the same.
I don’t consider him the primary reason. Just my opinion. Plus they haven’t played a game yet so we are putting the cart before the horse, anyway.

And yea man, if you put Jay Wright or another national champion coach there, that coach would be the primary reason SJU would be real good, real fast.

15, I really don’t need to explain anything to you. Just go read my original post to see my primary reasons. My two primary reasons are there for you to read to your hearts content.
He’s (Pitino) an excellent coach in a very good situation: A P6 program that is hungry to win again and will do whatever it takes and give him whatever he wants. He’s an important piece but not unique.
He isn’t stupid. That’s why he took the job - because he knows they are hungry and will do his bidding - whatever that entails above board or below it. Perfect spot for a grifter.

You said NIL is a primary reason, but without Pitino, the increased NIL doesn’t come.
Without Pitino, the added resources, national exposure/relevancy, better recruits, don’t come.
It all comes back to Pitino being the primary and sole reason St John’s will become good.

I am not being salty. I simply directed you to to my initial post where I listed two primary reasons: NIL $’s and relevancy.
I did not say which was more important. Neither did I define relevancy. The Rick helps make them relevant.
I don’t get the love - for lack of a better word - for Pitino on this board.
Also, how do you know that without Pitino the NIL doesn’t come? Isn’t it just as likely the big boosters had had enough and out of desperation were going to give any other coach with a winning track record the ability to buy a winning team.

Love him or hate him, Pitino is one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time. It’s just a fact. Don’t know why people downplay that.Jdrums#3 wrote: ↑1 year ago I am not being salty. I simply directed you to to my initial post where I listed two primary reasons: NIL $’s and relevancy.

In your scenario, if another coach with a Pitino like track record came aboard, then more NIL would follow. More resources, relevancy, etc would follow. Then, that coach would be the primary reason ST John’s would get good.
College programs’ success hinges mostly on the head coach. It’s been that way for a while and I don’t see that changing.

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
First, I never said he wasn’t a great coach. I don’t know why posters feel the need to defend him when someone doesn’t kiss his ring.
Second, imo I am not so sure college program success hinges on the coach as much as it once did as you state above. I think it may be evolving away from that and hinge on boosters prepared to buy talent to get to Final Four’s, get to the final two, win Natty.
They (wealthy determined and desperate boosters) will be able to buy a new winning team every year unless regulated somehow.
