That blows. I was watching TT and Oklahoma last night in Texas. There was a limited crowd there, but you could tell the players and coaches were feeding off the energy. Made such a huge difference from everyone's perspective, TV watchers included.

UMASS vs Dayton game cancelled
UMass Amherst basketball season postponed after campus deemed high risk
AMHERST, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Western Mass News is your local Sports Authority.
The UMass Amherst campus has been deemed a high-risk community.
A ghost town at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, as the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, shut all activities down for at least two weeks due to COVID cases surging in the area.
"It's super quiet, like last year we'd be out every night, and everything would be open late," UMass student Julia
In the latest three days of testing results at UMass, 298 positive tests were reported, and a total of 398 cases were active.
New restrictions not only shut in-person classes down but sports as well, pausing all games and practices, which is a set back for a lot of teams, especially the ones in season.
"They're disappointed, especially, we're gaining momentum, we're playing well, we had a huge win on the road, we've won our last two, or five out of our last six, and this happens," UMass Men’s Basketball Head Coach Matthew McCall said.
Senior Minuteman Carl Pierre, who just set the second all-time three-point shooting record over the weekend, said going from a great team win, with smiles on faces, to waking up to this news, wasn't pleasant.
"Honestly, it was just really frustrating. I think we've done a pretty good job of staying in our bubble, being responsible, just taking care of the things that we can control, and I think that the decision to bring back however many students are back, and having that affect us, is extremely frustrating," Pierre said.
Pierre said it's troubling to see their season taking the hit after remaining extremely safe and cautious, even before other students came on campus.
"We all try to wear our masks whenever we can. We tried to stay within our building, just trying to be as responsible as possible," Pierre explained.
While already impacted by 17 canceled or postponed games this season, McCall said he has full confidence in his team and knows they'll come back
stronger than ever, expecting an NCAA Tournament berth.
"
They've handled everything that's been thrown at them, all year, with an unbelievable amount of resiliency, and just great attitudes," McCall explained.
This order is in place again for a minimum of 2 weeks, and depending on how COVID cases are trending, student-athletes could be back in action as early as February 21.

Re: Covid-19 Effect on College Basketball & Other Sports
Sorry for the politics commenting but even from myself who has defended her against bashing in the past, Gina has got to leave now to allow the new administration to rework the vaccine distribution and hold the DOH accountable. She's strangling the governorship until the last possible moment. Is that really what's best for the state she says she cares SO MUCH about? Like Charlie Baker in neighboring MA, the state's Covid management started out well and has really fizzled late with no rhyme or reason for certain actions.
We're spending so much time establishing who is NOT allowed to get a vaccine that it is slowing up getting shots in arms. If there is leftover vaccine at a vax site not claimed by those 75 and older, I could care less about whether a motivated 30 y.o. goes and scoops that up. That's one less potential spreader of the virus everyone will encounter going forward.

Re: Covid-19 Effect on College Basketball & Other Sports
Eh, even with the M.D. next to his name I take non-epidemiologist opinions with a grain of salt. I think April herd immunity is a spicy take, and his numbers seem to be picked from the air, or in the case of the 77% decrease cherry-picked perfectly to line up with January 8th the highest positive date after the holiday gatherings then incubation period.
Early on in the pandemic our testing was sorely lacking so there were many multiples of people who had Covid that were not tested, but I think we're finding like half the cases currently...so his assertion of the actual virus cases are 6.5 times the positive tests seems very aggressive.
I do think so long as people actually accept the vaccine, we are in good shape to have herd immunity between the positive cases and immunity shots by later in the summer.

If cases were rising at this rate the US news media would be in full panic mode and expect us to all join in but when news is good it’s a back page story....if you watch the numbers you knew this was happening. It’s not all about being indoors either or about holidays. World wide many countries never get cold and all don’t have the same holidays
People get Covid they are immune
Some people are naturally immune
Vaccines in arms
Virus is running out of gas
But news media will tell us The variants are coming!!!!!

It’s been that way since the beginning. You can see the low weekend numbers in the graphs. That’s why it’s beneficial to look at the 7 day average.PeterRamTime wrote: ↑3 years agoThe numbers that come out on Monday and Tuesday are always lower than the rest of the week. 126,805 in RI now with their 1st shot. Still RI has too much vaccine not administered so more good news to come
Total population 1,057,125
Add in those who have already had Covid and immune -
Not hard to understand how and why the new cases are dropping quickly since beginning of January.....and will continue to drop

The numbers are trending in the right direction but we are not all the way into a trough, just to the level of late October when the cooling weather was making us tick upwards. I wouldn't spike the football YET but man I'll be more optimistic once outdoor dining and activities hit in April, knowing that we'll have a shit ton of vaccinations complete by the time the cold weather comes around and forces us indoors again. Going on flights or into a public building will be a lot less nerve-wracking in the coming months, hallelujah. The calendar is working for rather than against us now, with passing the middle of winter and no major holidays on the horizon.

Just got the first poke.....no side effects whatsoever.
They are saying the RNA vaccines are 85% effective a few weeks after the first dose.
Still going to wait a couple weeks after my second shot, to start going out to eat again.

My daughter has had both doses of Pfizer. She's a nurse in Pennsylvania. That's why she got it so early. No side effects from the first dose. Pretty sick (headache, chills, high fever, extreme fatigue) after the second dose for about 24 hours. Back to 100% the 2nd day after. Those side effects are good. It means the vaccine is working.rambone 78 wrote: ↑3 years ago Just got the first poke.....no side effects whatsoever.
