All bball players are like that these days, doesn't concern me. In one of the game write-ups it was mentioned that Martin lets his play speak for him on the court, nothing flashy or disrespectful about him.

Elite is a common term used by the high level basketball kids. Look into the Hoop Group Elite camps. When I am out at events, I see a ton of kids wearing shirts that say things like "Be Elite" that they got from Hoop Group.

from warm ups to the last second of the game there is nothing he did on the court to make you think he is all about himself. from cheering on teammates, to being deferential on offense, to being the first guy to pick up a teammate on the floor....he did all the little things you want to see.

That makes me insanely excited. Lamonte is one of my favorite rams ever. I'll never forget his freshman year (I do forget the opponent) when Lamont was closing out on a 3 in the corner, completely bit on a pump fake and jumped OVER the shooter into the courtside seats. His foot actually knocked the ball loose (somehow the refs didn't call a kicked ball, maybe they were surprised since the ball was above the shooters head), rhody scooped up the loose ball and got a layup at the other end. Lamont was real raw when he came in, but an incredible athlete who worked so hard, was a great rebounder and defender, and could get the crowd energized as well as anybody.

Reminiscing aside, I can only hope that Hassan brings that and more.

great info Billyboy......

I especially liked what this Coach had to say.........
“What’s great about Hassan is his upside,” said the Curtis coach. “He’s a wonderful human being, a tremendous listener and student of the game. He’s still young and still has a lot of maturing to do. In three years or so, you’re going to see a completely different player. I don’t think there’s anything that’s going to stop him.”

this kid should be a big time star here, has all the tools. cant stop, hurley time!

PS the kid Lynch on Jefferson that is going to FIU was very good, played the 2 but would likely be PG at next level, very good shooter. only other guy in this game that stood out like Hassan.

Hassan named to the 2013 All-City team. Not bad for his first full year of varsity basketball :-)

HASSAN MARTIN
Curtis, Sr. Forward

The 6-foot-7 University of Rhode Island-bound forward was a dominant offensive and defensive force in the paint for Curtis, averaging 17.3 points and 15.6 rebounds per game, guiding the Warriors to the PSAL Class AA semifinals, the first Staten Island school to do so in 32 years.

Frenji smokes the NY Blaze

Frenji's Hassan Martin (24pts) would dominate game play, closing out the half 49-41. With two minutes remaining in the final quarter, NY Blaze came close to inching up on Frenji's lead by ten 91-81. Martin then scored back-to-back baskets off a tip in and a feed from Dayshon Smith. NY Blaze would only manage to score seven more points, by the end of the fourth, 101-88.

Martin missing his Junior year due to a finger injury has really benefitted URI. I know Hurley recruited him at Wagner, but you have to believe if he had a strong Junior year and followed it up with a strong Summer then Hassan would be going to a BCS program. Its funny how things turn out. I'm pumped to see him in action next year. He seems to be getting better week after week.

Thanks for the update, Ace. Unfortunately, I had to leave after posting and missed it. I did see the national game, though. not as good as I was hoping to see Martin. Sure hope I get to see him before I die (lol-I hope).
Glad he looked so good. I think we have a very special player with him.

Dan told me that he sees Martin as a Treveon Graham of VCU type of player.
Thinks eventually will be a nightmare matchup for opponents.
Martin wants to play the 3, and he'll need to develop his face up game and shot.
With a deep frontcourt next year, he'll have every opportunity to hone his game,
without being force fed.

And just in case anyone doesn't click through, here are the best quotes from Hassan:

The 6-foot-6 forward has signed with the University of Rhode Island, but with rumors running rampant that Rams head coach and New Jersey native Dan Hurley may head back home to coach the Scarlet Knights, it made for a tough few days for Martin.

“I was a little but nervous, but he texted me and said it was all just noise and that he was gonna sign a contract and he’s gonna stay at Rhode Island,” said Martin after he scored 19 points and earned team MVP honors as his home team beat the away team, 114-102, in the Jordan Brand Classic Regional Game at Barclays Center.

“It shows that he’s not gonna give up on us even though that’s a Big Ten school,” Martin said in referencing Rutgers’ impending move to there for the 2014-15 school year. “That’s a good school and he chose to stay at Rhode Island. That shows how much of a good coach and an honest man he is.”
