At the risk of screwing up this thread, my wife and I just returned from Italy. One of our thrills was visiting the museum at La Scala in Milan. Rod, obviously I agree with you.rodfromcranston wrote:It's incredible, timeless music, which will be performed long after everyone has forgotten rap.
Puccini is the greatest 20th century opera composer of some of the best romantic stories and arias.
Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, and my favorite, La Boheme are played in most opera companies today,
throughout the world.
Nessun Dorma, was the anthem of the World Cup games and the number one song in the world
in 1990, as sung by Luciano Pavarotti.
Pavarotti drew one million people to Central Park that year.

I've got some Roy the Boy on my iPod. Most opera puts me to sleep; I got a great mix cd from a friend who loves it. Couldn't tell you one song; but really enjoy it.rodfromcranston wrote:I'll bet I could find something in Roy Orbison for you.

Rod, many consider 2Pac one of the best poets of the modern era.
I suggest listening to both "Hit 'Em Up" & "How Do U Want It" as they are brilliant works of art and often move me to tears.

Different strokes for different folks.
My generation had Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Neil Young, Moody Blues,Clapton and on and on.
Want profundity of lyrics? Try Bob Dylan, who also could write melodies, or anything by The Moody Blues,
not talking to a beat and calling it "music".

I am very proud of the eclectic nature of the music on my phone......from third world music, to country, to hip hop, to hard rock, to metal, Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, Tony Bennett, and disco.....there is good in all genres and worthless crap in all genres....you wonder how many songs that are hits today will still be palatable in 20 or 30 years....

Dr. Michael Nickens is fast becoming a living legend in pep band culture.

Doc Nix and the Green Machine is arguably the best band in the business and have got to be worth a point or two when it comes to home court advantage. I’ve observed players from opposing teams watching his act from the huddle during time outs instead of paying attention to the coaches. Welcome to the A-10 George Mason.

Baby steps in this department for Rhody. Maybe after this season, Rhody Madness can move to the Ryan Center to take advantage of the new video system and lighting. I would think the crowd will only get larger.

Kentucky spent $400,000 on their Big Blue Madness. Let that sink in for a minute.

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
$400K on one night of self congratulations? Wow!
I see this Madness thing, which began as a preview of teams,
is turning into a "can you top this" contest.
What's the point? Impressing recruits? Creating a buzz with students
by presenting them with non basketball related acts?
400K could pay for a boatload of recruiting trips, or an few assistant's salaries.

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
Agree Rod, it's basically becoming a schmenzer-measuring contest. Now that recruits have the ability to visit 3 or 4 schools for their Madness, it's important to be able to compete. Before, maybe a few schools had crazy performers and acts, but most of them were the same, status quo sort of show. Now, the goal is to try to stand out, or at least compete with the "big boys." Seems unless you are spending $50K+, you are falling behind... And if you want to even be competing with the best, you have to be spending well over $100K.
Naturally there is a lot more to recruiting then spending a lot of money at a midnight show, but unfortunately most of these kids are chasing the dream of going "big time" and being "big time." Having "big time" celebrities, actors, musicians at these events only helps that perception if you have everything else going for your program (tradition, coaching, PT, etc.).

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
I wonder what Providence College paid to have DJ Nick Cannon host their event. Per his booking site, The America's Got Talent host's appearance fee is typically between $75,000 and $100,000. I would imagine he was paid much less but PC still would have had to pay him tens of thousands. I guess you can blow money like that when you don't have to pay to build and maintain your own hoops facility.

Re: Rhody Madness 2013!!
i doubt nick cannon lowered his fee, why would he? do you think he was begging to MC the PC midnight madness? those fees are precedent, rarely are they lowered unless their is a charitable component or some other passion project reason behind it. dont see that in this case. and i also dont think many 18 year old inner city kids feel much affinity towards nick cannon, but i assume young jeezy wasn't getting approved by the priests. so they picked the safe black guy. will smith was out of their budget.

Big East seems to be going for the Entertainment Dollar and the Twitter publicity----------
and I wonder what did Big East Georgetown paid for B.o.B?
and wonder what Big East Villanova paid for Nicki Minaj?
Seems that the Big East Teams have plenty of spending money these days - wonder to what extent Fox is directing this traffic?

clearly the powers that be at Gtown and Nova have their finger on the pulse a lot more than our friends to the north....makes Nick Cannon look even worse, my guess is that the recruits were clowning him.
