I had heard of Wawa because I watch The Goldbergs, but didn't know what it was.

We saw WaWas everywhere when we vacationed in Pennsylvania last summer. It's a convenience store, I think.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
In other threads there has been discussion of our need for a "banger" and varying definitions of what a "banger" is. If being a banger means defending the post effectively and getting great position to rebound then sign me up. Rebounding is more about court awareness and anticipation than physical size. Dennis Rodman was the ultimate warrior when it came to being in the proper position to rebound.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Isn't the best rebounder supposed to be Wilt Chamberlin? Even Bill Russel kind of openly accepts Wilt's greatness with the comfort of knowing Bill's grit and team first attitude trumped Wilt's everything many times.
Still Dennis Rodman's rebounding ability is the recent gold standard, I don't think Tristan Thompson approaches Rodman's ability.
Rodman was also an atheletic 6'7.
IDK what im talking about. Tangent. This post is really in reply to broadcasters talking about Rodman being the best rebounder and Tristan Thompson being that good.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
All you need to know about Wilt's total domination
is, he once got 55 rebounds in a game against
Bill Russell and the Celtics.
Roll that number around in your mind.
55.
It's actually at least as impressive as his 100 points in a game,
given the level of competition.
22.9 career rpg will never be passed.
Rodman had 13.1 rpg. Not on the same planet as Wilt.
Russell had the better supporting cast, nearly always.
In the years Wilt had greatness around him, he won.

Well, not true, process. Baylor and West teamed up with Chamberlain to face the 68-69 Celts to lose in 7 games, the 69-70 Knicks (also, in 7 games) DNP vs. the Knicks during the 71-72 Finals (winners in 5 games) and was retired for the 72-73 season , when the Lakers lost to the Knicks yet again in five games.Da_Process_Survivor wrote:well, except for going 1-3 in the Finals playing with West and Baylor.rodfromcranston wrote:All you need to know about Wilt's total domination

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I saw Wilt play many many times in person and also on TV. There is no denying that if Russell and wilt had switched teams,
Boston would have been much better than they were and Philadelphia and the LA teams would have been much reduced.
chamberlain was a freak of a physical specimen. he was not only tall, but his arms were exceptionally long even for his
stature. and he was one of the strongest men alive. additionally, he was a smart player who knew where to position
himself for rebounds by anticipating the angle of misses and blocking out. He was always in position. If you don't get to the
right spot before the shot, you won't have a chance for a rebound no matter how tall or strong you are. it's a knack. and
of course you have to be willing to fight for position and not only look for the ball to score. Wilt was not a selfish player. He scored
so much because that is what his coaches and team needed. I think we don't see great rebounding numbers from players because
few players pride themselves in rebounding the way they do scoring and blocking shots. We could use a player who thinks job
number one is rebounding. I don't see many players like that anymore.

I remember him putting out a song, but don't remember what the song was. wilt was also trying to arrange a boxing match
with Muhammed Ali in the sixties through a newspaper columnist in philly whose son was a friend of mine. wilt really did
march to his own drummer.

I can't remember the name of the song. it had to with "down by the river with you", or something like that. The melody wasn't bad.
It was funny watching him and Ali go at it. Ali kept calling him a billy goat (not billyboy) because of his facial hair.

This player would have been more useful to the
program than Robinson:
Zach Braziller @NYPost_Brazille
UConn transfer Terrence Samuel from Brooklyn visits Hofstra tomorrow, per source. Has visited VCU. Iona and Providence also in mix.

Rod, a while back I talked to a couple of UConn boosters about Samuels.
They said he's got all the tools, but simply can't shoot a lick.
He would be an OK backup for Garrett, but like a lot of others, he wants more PT.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
First off, we recruited him, so he's familiar with URI.
Secondly, he's a true point guard.
He also has experience that not one of our players have.
Playing in an NCAA championship game.
He played well in the UConn run to the title.
We need a PG more than our 5th SG. Garrett is it.
Maybe we can bring one in in the 2016 recruiting cycle?

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Rod--you are a very tough guy to please. I have seen Samuel play a lot and do not see how he could really help us. Also, there is no way he would come here to play 10-12 minutes a game behind JG. Talk about being an awful shooter--last year he was 0 for 17 on 3 pointers and 0 for 18 in 2 years.
From what I have read about Robinson he is clearly the better option due to his great defense and being able to take the ball to the rim.

Hopefully, Thompson can grow into the guy to be the backup PG and we can focus on bringing in an interior player to eventually take over for Hassan. Like Robinson, Samuel's raw numbers aren't that good, but as I said, I'm not familiar with him or his game, so I'm not sure where I would stand on a Samuel vs Robinson argument.rodfromcranston wrote:First off, we recruited him, so he's familiar with URI.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
So, Samuel wouldn't get any time behind Garrett,
but Robinson would get time behind EC, Terrell, Thompson,
Akele, et al? Really.
So Robinson made 0 3s last year, too.
Difference here is, one is a PG and one is a SG.
Samuel is a Carlos Easterling type PG.
We have no backup PG, but we have a shitload of SGs.
Also, Samuel visited VCU Is he going to get time over Jequan Lewis?
There are very few places will he not find established talent.

Who is saying he would not get any time behind Garrett--certainly not me. My point is that he cannot be interested in playing only 10-12 minutes a game wherever he winds up.

You're probably right.
It's why there are 700 plus transfers this season.
Kids are told how great they are from their first AAU game.
They all have NBA hopes, realistic or not.
In their minds, they are all stars in their own movie.
When reality sets in, they don't face facts, they run away,
thinking a different place may give different results.

For this team's point guard situation, I'd prefer they bring in a '16 that they can develop in their system to eventually start for them rather than a guy in the same class as Jarvis whose aim is more than a back-up role.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Rod that is spot on. Although a different place may yield different results. Many of these recruits are looking at name only, not the program, how they fit in, what their role is. Tough on a young kid, and many are being given suspect advice. They move because they made a wrong choice. We see it all the time. We recruit a kid who would start day one, and they go to P5x and sit on the bench. The Murphy's are a prime example.rodfromcranston wrote:You're probably right.

Funny thing is the NBA doesn't give a rats ass which conference a kid played in. Shit, a URI football player was just signed to the Baltimore Ravens.
And Steph Curry is in the NBA finals, who played at Davidson in the SoCon. If you can play it does not matter where you go to school. It matters you go to a school you like.

The last prediction for Tyrique Jones was in January. Dan and ex-coach Murray saw him several times since then. I'm hoping he's priority #1. Does he want to go to UConn and sit for a couple of years, or does he want to go somewhere and play right away? Obviously we have tons of minutes for big guys and even more next year.

Three big jucos on that list.
Glad to see us getting involved early on, instead of
this spring's panic of getting in late with jucos.
Lots of schools plug holes with jucos.
Hoiberg when he was at ISU, did very well with jucos
and transfers.
