Well in my Freshman year Gary Koenig was our 6-5 center and Charlie Lee was our only Black player. Chubin, Nightingale, and McGovern played on the freshman team. You could make a case that those were glory years for Men's BB. I would argue that except for the 0"s we have had excellent history of BB success in each decade.

Funny, when I was a kid, the Bazar family of long running, loyal boosters,
would take me to games.
On those long rides, I learned of the great URI history, stories of Frank Keaney,
Ernie Calverley and Stan Stutz.
As a history freak, I found it all very interesting. To me, it was sort of like finding out about your
family's roots.
I never understood people who casually dismiss all that went before them,
as if it doesn't matter or have any relevance.
I was amazed at the "If you could pick one player" thread, how many picked guys
who couldn't hold Sly Williams or Kenny Green's jock strap.
If you don't know who they are, and you're a fan of the team, find out who they are.

To me, it's like if you didn't watch a show, then you get netflix and you can just binge watch it. When you learn history, the only limit to it is your appetite. You don't have to sit around waiting for events to unfold. My favorite experience like that was discovering my father's record collection and just experiencing decades worth of music at once. As a sixth grader, going from having heard Stairway to Heaven a couple times to going through Led Zeppelin's entire catalog from start to finish. The Beatles, The Doors, The Stones, Dylan. You can do that with anything, especially sports because there is such an extensive record available if you want to learn about it. And I don't get how any fan wouldn't want to.

Rod, when it comes to history, I think the younger generation nowadays doesn't give two shits.

And I mean that not just involving basketball. All history.

That's a very troubling trend, I'm afraid.

As much as I want a win I am very afraid that our youth is going to be difficult to overcome. The game is so important and playing in front of the rabid huge Dayton crowd will make it very tough for such a young team and especially JT and JG. We gotta play close to a perfect game to come home with a win. We are due to hit some 3s and make 75% of our free throws............

Don Kaull confirmed for me that when KG dunked on DC he shit talked the Big Least v A10 saying something along the lines of 'that's how we do it in the A10.' Witnessing that dunk was one of the best experiences for a young Rhody fan.

luke wrote:As a Dayton grad, I have watched all of their games this year. At home Dayton struggled the most against Richmond and St. Joes and were lucky to win both believe it or not. URI is going to have to hit some outside shots, but they do have some size advantage over the Flyers that they haven't had against anyone else in the A10. Dayton doesn't tend to play much zone which does help. Dayton looves to get the ball down low to Pollard and Pierre. Pierre can step out and hit the three, Pollard won't shoot the three, so I would guess Hassan on Pierre and Biruta on Pollard. I think Pollard is too physical for TJ. Watson might be a better option if needed. Stopping Pierre, Sibert and Pollard in that order are key. Kyle Davis an Scoochie Smith are slashers mostly, but will shoot the three if open. Darrell Davis is a three point specialist. Can't leave him alone, but he has cooled off lately. No bench other than Darrell Davis and Bobby Whehrli, a former walkon. The others are all walkons that do not play. To win this game, URI will have to limit silly turnovers, hit free throws and control the glass. On defense, create turnovers and avoid leaving shooters open to help out on defense similar to Davidson. This is a winnable game if URI is patient, takes good shots, hits some and Makes free throws, but it won't be a walk in the park. I wouldn't put money on either team.
Good analysis.

I'm always extremely impressed with how active this board is.

It was interesting reading their board. Apparently they are having big time problems with student attendance. It seems odd with the reputation of the atmosphere and coming off their run last year. It probably won't manifest itself tonight with being a nationally televised game with so much on the line, but we might not be walking into quite the lion's den that we're assuming.

We wish we had their attendance "problems".

They draw close to 12,000 a game. Maybe the student attendance isn't all there, but the alumni/casual fan base shows up in huge numbers, unlike ours.

The thing about their program, they have come even when their team hasn't been that good.

Again, unlike us, who have major problems with the "fair weather fan", who only shows up when we're winning.

We're also probably lucky that our students only have a short walk to the RC. Imagine if they had to drive to watch a game?

Blackburn does a great job. Honestly, I don't even care about Dayton that much but I read his recons/recaps for most games they play because I think he's so entertaining. Off-color and weird at times, but hey, aren't all good sports blogs?

Pretty fair assessment of the team, though TJ and Jared don't get enough respect, if you ask me. Liked the following: "Here’s what we do know about Rhody: they are an imposing team defensively. They are holding their opponents to just 58.5 points per game, allowing a ridiculous .87 points per possession. Not many teams defend the three-point line as well as URI, which will certainly a factor against a team as trey-reliant as Dayton. The Rams are not a dangerous team offensively, they win games by slugging it out down low and getting to the foul-line. If you allow Rhode Island to score in the mid-sixties, there’s a very good chance you aren’t winning the ballgame."

I would have argued with his free-throw comment, but would you believe that Rhody has made 34 more FT's than the two teams tied for second in conference games, and attempted 28 more than second place VCU? I think that's something that hasn't been discussed enough - even though we are below average percentage wise, we do a hell of a job getting to the free throw line.

I think biggest key to tonight will be stopping Pollard inside.

Our 3 point defense has been one of our many strengths all year. I'm not worried about us stopping that. It seems like Kendall Pollard is the wild card that they like to go to.

Gil needs to have it tonight. He needs to have it or get a quick hook out.

Pollard is 6'6 210. Biruta is 6'8 235. There is NO EXCUSE to get out muscled for ANYTHING inside tonight.

Earl Watson has shown he can lock down people bigger than him, and plays very well for his size when he's the smaller guy, which is usually all the time.

For once, we will have someone playing the 5 on the other team that is both shorter and smaller than Waton's 6'7 255. The second Gil loses position on a back door for an easy lay up is when Earl will need to come in.

I really hope Gil pulls it together for his final games in a Rhody uniform - but I REALLY WANT A CONFERENCE TITLE.

This is also a game where we can run with Hass playing the 5 and Jarvis, JT, EC, and TJ a lot.

Either way we should OWN the glass and get easy points inside. There's no reason we take early in the clock 3 pointers tonight.

Agreed with Rob. While I did pick Xavier Mumford on "If you could pick one player" thread for another shooting guard, it was mainly b/c he played with most of the team, so the chemistry would be there. Other than that, Kenny Green would be ideal - him and Hassan Martin would be incredible together!

Good points by both Rod and TP on history lessons here too. While I have vague memories, I'm probably too young to appreciate the Sly Williams era like older members of Keaney Blue do, but I definitely love reading about that era along with the Keaney highlights in the 40s. It must have been something back then!

Yeah Come on GIL!

Fouls will be a top factor in this game. Both teams want to keep their guys on the floor. Our team is delicate in that department. They also are short handed.

I'm excited to see the matchups of where our guys go defensively and how they manage. Can our guys lock theirs up with a title on the line?

I could be wrong, but I see TJ in early, to deal with their zone,
and provide better defense.
I doubt we'll see Biruta or Watson, unless Hassan gets into foul trouble.
Hassan should be able to cover Pollard. Both guys are foul prone.
If you can get into Dayton's limited bench, that's a positive.
As for Big Earl, he has scored 6 points, 8 rebounds and 14 fouls, 5 blocks
in 82 total minutes for the month of February.
Mainly a non-factor.

Yes, RR2, we've come very far from that awful era.

Pierre is the issue with Biruta or TJ or whoever plays next to Hassan Martin. Pierre simply is a very good basketball player that can score all over the floor but gets it really going inside. I would be shocked if TJ could stop Pierre's deep post hooks and post moves.

Perhaps denying the entry pass would go a long way. That is such a energy issue though. Denying the entry pass takes wild energy.

As psyched as I am for tonight’s game, Joe Lunardi managed a buzzkill during this morning’s bracketology analysis of the A-10 conference. He has Dayton (9 in the Midwest) in, citing the Flyers’ big win on the road to a ranked team last Saturday as well as their strength of schedule. He maintains it will take an A-10 tournament Championship, even if we win the regular season title, to put us in the show regulating tonight’s contest importance to tournament rankings, byes etc.. VCU (7 in the South) seems invulnerable despite back-to-back losses this late in the season. It would be interesting to see how a Davidson (last-four-out) win Thursday night would affect both VCU and Davidson bracketology wise? Anyway, I’m hoping Dayton’s short bench will fold under our relentless man-to-man defense in what I expect to be foul-laden game tonight.

I believe Dayton is good match-up for Rhody. The Rams defend the 3 very well, as we saw against Davidson, and they wear down their opponents which bodes well for a team with a razor thin bench.

The key will be on offense. Dayton will play zone to protect themselves from foul trouble and we are terrible from 3. Rhody has had some games were their ball movement and cuts have been outstanding and they look great, but they don't sustain it all game. This needs to be that game. Drive into that zone, force their defenders to help and players need to move without the ball on the weak side for easy baskets. And if you have a lane, just drive hard to the rim, not away from it like they do at times. Dayton may ole on defense to limit fouls and if they don't, they'll be in foul trouble as they are not tall to challenge shots effectively.

It all changed for the better, when TJ
entered the game.
He's so good in the high post, and make the right choices.
The commentators were talking about how Virginia
attacked the Syracuse zone with dribble drives into the heart
of the zone, and ether taking the shot or dishing to the wings.
We come close to doing this with Jarvis, who is very good
at getting deep into the opponent's zone.

Many of us have the DVD of this game. You may want to check w/ ATP on this.

The portion from about 10 to 18 seconds is what you're looking for.

Love it! What a team!

I think we need to get off to a good start, and maybe take the fans
out of the game.
What gets fans into a game are turnovers leading to baskets and three
point barrages.
We need to protect the ball, and limit their 3s, and avoid getting into
foul trouble, especially Hassan.

Just a reminder - I'm watching the game from Champions in Back Bay http://www.championsboston.com/

I already called and verified they will have the game on. SmartyBarrett should be joining me. I'll be wearing a dark blue Rhode Island long sleeve T shirt with the interlocking bi color RI in the middle.

Hope to see you there! PM me for my cell # if you like.

Sweep The Leg wrote:I believe Dayton is good match-up for Rhody.

The refs are always a key, too, especially at a place like Dayton. URI won't wear down Dayton if foul trouble rears its ugly head.
