Email this morning seems to indicate they expect a very large student turnout. Gates opening 90 minutes before tipoff in response to near-capacity crowd:
We are anticipating a near capacity crowd so please plan to arrive early to avoid traffic delays and long lines. Again lobby doors open at 2:30 PM and turnstiles open at 3:00 PM.
PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE IN POSSESSION OF A TICKET THAT HAS 2:00 PM PRINTED ON IT, THE TICKET IS STILL VALID FOR THE ADJUSTED GAME TIME CHANGE TO 4:00 PM AND SHOULD BE USED FOR THE GAME THIS AFTERNOON, SATURDAY, JANUARY 31 VS GEORGE WASHINGTON.

It's the same as always it says it right in the email. Lobbies open 1.5hrs before tip and the gates open 1hr before.
Question: If walk up sales are not going great and there are still lots of tickets left in the 300 sections, do these tickets then become available as free tickets for students?
The student allotment is 2000, but that number can be exceeded when ticket availability warrants it. URI hits a higher level in fan interest when Ryan sells out and the students are capped at 2000!
I'd expect a lot of tickets to be purchased today.
It's a perfect day and time for a game.
10 degrees. No reason to do anything outside. 4pm is the perfect time to get errands done in the morning and afternoon and watch a hoops game in the early evening. I'm thinking just above 7K
Section104 wrote:Looks like tons of tickets still available on Ticketmaster. I'm guessing we'll have a worse turnout than against VCU. Really need the students to fill the place.
I'll take the over of the VCU attendance and put my house on it.
Does this mean you think the attendance will exceed the VCU game? If I'm understanding correctly do you attribute higher attendance to students being back? Or additional factors?
Yes I believe the attendance will exceed the VCU attendance. And I attribute higher attendance mainly because students are back but also because 4pm on a Saturday is prime time for alumni attendance as well. 7pm on a Wednesday not so much.
Heading off...to my grand daughters 9th birthday party. Will watch the game around six on tv (in my basement screaming as if I'm there). 205, keep that spirit alive, don't let ez tell you when to get on your feet. Bring home a "W" Go Rhody!
Lets go Rhody fans. I couldn't agree with Dan more. You can tell he's getting frustrated with the paying fans support. There's over 1 million people that live in the State. We have to be able to get 5k to go to a game on a Saturday afternoon. That's only half a percent! Just like against Nebraska, I believe the fans can win this game. This young team will play with so much fire by feeding off a hyped up crowd. Get there early! Show up when the team first takes the floor for warm ups so that they see the support immediately and take that confidence back into the locker room.
(I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir)
Also, Go Pats! Living in Seattle has been interesting the last couple weeks.
Early? We have an LA Lakers crowd. Gets there late.
Causes commotions looking for seats while the game is going on.
Leaves early during close games.
Makes more racket over some junk being thrown or shot at them.
Wonder when what's happening on the court, will have them make more noise
than the giveaways?
You're not wrong, Rod, but at least they're at the games.
Dan's being pretty clear with saying things like this-
Also, a semi- unrelated thing that maybe only I find nice, but it's been really great to hear some of Dan's former players talking about how good Rhody's doing and being very genuinely happy for him and the team.
Exactly. When we step back from analyzing every little thing about this program, one thing is very clear. This is the most exciting season we've had around here in many years. We've been able to beat weaker teams and stay close with better ones. This hasn't been the case for a while.
We're not where we want to be yet. But, we're certainly heading in the right direction.
Getting a little queasy with Hurley continuing to talk about crowds... He needs to realize that this will take time.. Not going to happen over night. Hope he is in it for the long haul. Finally looks like we could have an extended period of good teams with him at the helm.. Stick with it Dan.. They will come!!
He just really wants thing to develop here, and he wants his guys to have the opportunity to play in a great college basketball environment. It's been there in flashes this season.
The team is doing their part- they're winning, easy to root for, and working hard. It would be nice to not have to worry about people only coming out to see a perfect team or only when things go exactly as people want them to.
Yes he's very vocal about attendance issues. I too hope he sticks around long enough to give attendance a chance. I get where he's coming from, but when you haven't beaten PC/Umass in a few years and haven't made the NCAA since 1999, it'll take more than 1 promising season for people to show up.
I hope he sticks around to see what this fan base is capable of with a winning program.
I get where Dan is coming from.. My wife and I basically sit alone in the back rows of 306.. We are up and screaming all the time.. We are both in our 50's not afraid to cheer on our team.. Look forward to it being more lively.. Lot of older people just sit on their hands.. Drives us crazy.. Actually wonder what others think in the club seats behind us and around us but who cares.. Have been screaming and cheering at URI games off and on since 1976.. Don't plan on stopping now.. Love the college bball atmosphere when it is electric.. Like I said Dan it will come.. Stick with us!!!

This kind of post is not helpful. All of this debate about the crowds is meaningless. It is really simple, and plenty of people here get it and have been saying it for a long time: if the team wins people will show up. Go to the NCAA tournament and win a game this year or next year and bring everybody back, and you will see the place fill up more often than not. Follow that up with another good campaign and there will be a waiting list for season tickets. That is how it works not just in Kingston, but mostly everywhere.

What he said.
Proudly supplying the Internet with online wisecracks, impertinent comments and loathing of all things mental hospital since 1996.
Fan base is earned, not given. I actually worry if Dan thinks this team has earned sellout crowds. If he is working the fan base to get better crowds that is fine. You need to beat your rivals or make the tourney before you earn the trust of the fan base back. Until then, expect spotty attendance. It's not fIr to this team necessarily because I do think these kids are really good and will give the fans what they want eventually, but this is reality when we have not had any consistent success in the last 7 years.

Sorry to belabor the point. I told Dan the night before the PC
game,
"Win this and the total perception in Rhode Island changes".
He looked at me as if I were from outer space.
That's the truth. In this state, we get lingering attention when we
beat the people's choice. Like it or not, not to put them on any kind of
pedestal, but that's where it has always happened.
To get the casual, fringe fans to the games, you have to beat PC.
That's when they get a slap and pay attention.
It hasn't happened in five years. Dan is 0-3 against Cooley.
Dan can get as POed as he wants, but winning, the attention of the state,
and opening the minds and hearts of the people you want to reach,
begins with beating PC.
Just beating poor teams and losing close to good ones, isn't going to cut it
when people's entertainment dollar and where they're going to spend it,
is an issue.Sellouts are EARNED, not a given, juts because we have a winning record
for the first time in five years.
Getting out in a cold night, parking some distance from the arena, and taking
forever to get out of said parking area after the game, needs something special
for the average Joe Schmo, north of East Greenwich, to bother.
All Dan's grousing isn't going to make a bit of difference.
The student attendance is a very different issue than casual-fringe fans attending.

Today is Greek day (or whatever they call it). So lots of Greek students will be here, expecting a full student section today. Hopefully the Greeks are more into the game than they usually are
