I've been working nonstop in May, so I have no idea what's been going on. Are we actually in the mix with Wilborn? That kid is going to be a stud, and I assumed he would be going to a high major. If we can land a player of his caliber, I'll be surprised. I watched him a few times, and I remember seeing a stat that he was averaging like 14 and 8 in the conference. Great player.Jersey77 wrote: ↑3 weeks agoAside from trying to land a rim protector, I hope we put a full court press on getting Eli Wilborn.Ramfan22 wrote: ↑3 weeks agoThey definitely have some players visiting. Yeah the 4 guard lineup was only feasible because of the absence of Bilau and Green and needing an alternative to Brown and Fuchs on the floor at the same time.
Either way, Mr Whitmore is following all these big guys. Perhaps someone is visiting this weekend?
He is a front court player that can develop with us and possibly build around.
Him being from close-by in Ct should help.

The more public it becomes the more questions will be asked about why this pay or compensation is not taxed.
The pay for play numbers are going to grow much bigger as:
- the gambling rage grows faster and faster
- the media money the schools have been hoarding gets pulled away by the players and their agents
- bidding on players becomes more sophisticated and widespread
- players, agents and media share what players are getting offered
- more money has to be raised to pay for payroll taxes

Good job raising gambling, Ramster. I am not up on gamblings role in all this on a legitimate level as an industry.
I wonder what, if any, role big money gambling casino’s play in all this ?
Are casino’s banned from paying players for attending casino events, etc. ?
Are UNLV players raking it in from the strip ? Does Mohegan or Foxwoods pay any UConn players to do events for them ?
Anyone here know if it’s allowed or not ?

Guess athletes were better off when it was under the table
Pretty complicated in reading the tax implications that I just reviewed.
So people like us contribute income that has already been taxed and then the players have to pay taxes on the after tax income we just contributed.
Janet Yellen double dipping and here I was thinking she was missing an opportunity.
All the more reason why the player salaries should come from the Non-Profit University Media Contract Deals with ESPN, Fox, CBS, etc.

Speaking of taxes…
We should start our own government. The Republic of Keaney Blue. Preferably someplace warm and offshore so we can launder….err, I mean subsidize Rhody basketball through a foreign aid package.

Just seems odd to me JDrums that a non-profit can pay players to play, reap the monetary benefits from the teams performance, and not gave to pay taxes on the money taken in from the basketball and football programs.
But the athletes themselves have to pay taxes on the income.
Oh well.
“Fair share”?

Bent Leutchen withdrew from the portal and is returning to UC Irvine. One 7 footer off the board.
James Whitford was following him on twitter, but Mizzou was the heavy front runner. Good for UC Irvine getting their center back though.

Ramster, I think one of the posters here brought up before what I will post below in the first paragraph below. To paraphrase…ramster wrote: ↑3 weeks ago Just seems odd to me JDrums that a non-profit can pay players to play, reap the monetary benefits from the teams performance, and not gave to pay taxes on the money taken in from the basketball and football programs.

The way college sports is going, at some point in the future schools may have to spin off football and basketball to avoid jeopardizing their non-profit status. Perhaps an upstart rival league files a suit that argues that the Power 2 are nothing but for profit sports entities disguised as nonprofit educational institutions and therefore have an unfair competitive advantage ?
I can envision this happening although, I am not a lawyer or tax expert to know if the above scenario is even possible.
Anyway, it is amazing to me that you can have schools in the SEC and Big 10, just to name two conferences, that can run for profit sports leagues and rake in 10’s of millions of dollars per year per school in 2 sports while under the guise of education (where a significant % of the players don’t go to class or have sham classes) without having to pay most of their labor force and provide other benefits for profit professional leagues must provide.
Greed run amuck. And it still isn’t enough for some of them. They want even more.
If you vote for me I will strip the P2 conferences of their guise and force them out to the open market to compete with the NFL and NBA.

Have you hired someone to fix something at your house? Don't you pay them with money that was already taxed from your paycheck? This is no different. The state name of People’s Republic of Keaney Blue doesn’t work for me, RhodyKyle.
Either we should just keep it Republic of Keaney Blue or change it to The Basketball Republic of Keaney Blue. After all, this isn’t about the people, it is about basketball.

Quite the coincidence, 78.
How come all these other coaches changing schools, except for coaches coming to here, bring players with them ?
Coach Whit, bring us a good big to play with Fuchs.
Btw 78, I do not normally post here on KB this late.
Is this KB adult swim time ? Asking for a friend.

Maybe I’m misreading the portal but I’m not at all surprised we didn’t land Conway. Were we even in on him? He’s a 6’9 starter who averaged 10 and 4 for a tournament team that beat Kentucky, why the hell would he want to come here?

6’9 starters that average 10 and 4 at the mid major level are going up in conference not moving laterally to another mid major. Even if he was to move laterally to a mid major it certainly wouldn’t be to a team with zero momentum or tournament hopes this upcoming season.PeterRamTime wrote: ↑3 weeks agoSame reason Jamarques Lawrence has?

In what universe is Horizon league to Atlantic 10 a lateral move? In what universe does averaging 10 and 4 in the HORIZON LEAGUE make a player some P5 must have? Are you serious?
We don't have zero momentum, we are putting together a pretty strong roster thus far and we have decent NIL. 6'9 Horizon league big men are not out of reach for us lolol

The Horizon is a much worse conference than the A10. I think the A10 was ranked 8th-9th and the Horizon is in the 20s. I don't think going to an A10 team would have been a lateral move. But it makes sense that he wants to play for a possible tournament team instead of a rebuilding team like ours.STC wrote: ↑3 weeks ago6’9 starters that average 10 and 4 at the mid major level are going up in conference not moving laterally to another mid major. Dang, it is getting late in the portal game and many teams still have needs so competition is still fierce - even for portal players who’ve already committed (see VCU).
As far as the front court,I think there are still a few JC bigs in the top 25 of the top 100 - as of a week ago, anyway.
Maybe we snag one for added front court depth and insurance in case of injury?
Maybe there’s still a chance that we add a big from overseas? Is there a cutoff date to add players from overseas?

$2 mil for one year?
If that tweet is accurate, 78, that is crazy. I wonder what he was paid for last season?
When will this NIL payout market find a level? It has to, right? But then, maybe not?
I guess as long as there are desperate programs and desperate collectives, it will just continue to go up and up.
It’s like the arms race of the 80’s that brought Russia to its knees. The US, being the power conference, just out spent everyone else until no country could keep up.
Like Ripley said in Aliens, let’s nuke ‘em from orbit. Somebody smack down these power conferences and bring some sanity to player movement and compensation.

When will this NIL payout market find a level? It has to, right? But then, maybe not?
I guess as long as there are desperate programs and desperate collectives, it will just continue to go up and up.

He'll make money! It won't be 2 million though.
