WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named George Washington senior James Bishop IV its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Rhode Island freshman David Fuchs was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Feb. 19-25.

Bishop had a tremendous scoring week and crossed the 2,000-point threshold at GW in two road contests at Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis. The guard from Baltimore averaged 33.0 points, 5.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals while shooting 50 percent from the floor, 64.7 percent from beyond the arc and 81.3 percent from the free throw line. Bishop scored 32 at Saint Joseph's, making 10-of-22 (.455) shots, 4-of-6 (.667) 3-pointers and 8-of-9 (.889) free throws. He added four assists, a rebound and a block in the game. On Saturday at SLU, Bishop scored a season-high 34 points, including his 2,000th career point at GW. Bishop made 11-of-20 (.550) shots, a career high 7-of-11 (.636) threes, and 5-of-7 (.714) free throws. He dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds plus three steals.

In his lone game of the week, Fuchs scored a career-high 23 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, had two assists, blocked two shots and recorded two steals against Richmond. The double-double was his sixth of the season. Fuchs was 9-of-12 (.750) from the field, 1-of-1 from the arc and 4-of-6 (.667) at the free throw line. He missed URI's game at La Salle due to a sprained ankle suffered in practice the day before.

I was down on him earlier, especially after the Mohegan games. Good for him, he should be part of the group to stay. I often forgot he is just a freshman. Lots of upside, get a few more hp in the motor!

Huge congrats to Fuchs! Really hope he is able to play next game. I think him being out really highlighted even more how important he is for this team.

From GoRhody.com

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshman David Fuchs has been named the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Fuchs had a career day in his lone contest of the week, scoring a career-high 23 points to go with 12 rebounds against Richmond. Fuchs was 9-of-12 from the field - including hitting his only 3-point attempt - and he added two blocked shots, two steals and two assists against the Spiders. Fuchs missed Rhody's second game of the week with an injury.

The double-double was the sixth of the season for Fuchs. He is tied for third in the country among freshmen in the category, trailing only New Mexico's JT Toppin (9) and Eli Wilborn from Saint Francis (Pa.), who has eight. Fuchs has started all 23 games he has played for Rhode Island, averaging 8.1 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game. The Vienna, Austria native is shooting .533 from the field.

Fuchs is the third Ram to earn a weekly honor this season. Guard Jaden House was the A-10 Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 13, while guard Cam Estevez was the A-10 Rookie of the Week for the week of Dec. 18. The last time Rhode Island had two different freshman win rookie of the week honors in the same season was 2013-14, when E.C. Matthews, Hassan Martin and Ifeanyi Onyakaba did so. Matthews won the honor seven times, while Martin and Onyakaba each won it once.

Bc he’s foreign player isn’t he cut out from the NIL of it all??

If so then the only reason he leaves is due to relationship with coach and prospects for his future. He’s a seminal figure in our retention needs this spring/summer.

I said it in another thread, he's also the only scholarship player on the team to make the Dean's List. And he did it in his first semester. That's a great accomplishment. I remember how my first semester in college was quite a transition coming from high school. Not easy. If anybody saw him in the media availability piece, he's very well spoken too. So, good for him. He's also a good student and a smart kid.

Right, a lot was made of that last year when Adama Sanogo was having his great season but not eligible for NIL monies due to being foreigner.

Retaining Fuchs will be vital along with several other core players if we want to be competitive next season.

More than 20,000 international NCAA athletes are being locked out of the multi-million-dollar NIL industry due to restrictive U.S. visa laws — brands can't sign them, and NIL collectives can't offer them the same deals as they do American citizens.

International students are being left out of the NIL job market because of the F-1 Student visas they obtain to go to school in the U.S.

Fuchs has a great upside. Works hard all of the time. No, he isnt fast, but he is strong and competes. He cares too. You can tell by his passion which is evident to see. Ugonnna Kingsley went from Putnam Science to Kentucky and got paid well. I know its not same same, but things can be done. Or, we loose him to another program that knows how to take care of foreign players.

From the article the International Students can work in part time campus positions but can’t benefit from NIL.
Of course they know this when they come to the US

While international students are allowed to work in part-time on-campus positions, such as those in the campus bookstore or dining halls, they, unlike their U.S.-born teammates, are unable to earn a profit from their NIL by appearing at events like autograph signings.

I think with international prospects, the danger is less losing them to a bigger school via NIL, and more that they get scooped up by a European professional league. As I've mentioned in that "where are they now?" thread, most foreign leagues have caps on the number of American or non-national players are allowed on a roster. Nikola Akele left URI early, iirc, because of this, and he's now been a pro for six years. I think Dayton or Davidson lost a player to the pro leagues as well.

Coach,
I agree on his upside, he works hard, he is strong, he competes and he has passion.

I’ll add that he is unselfish, passes well, he wants the team to win above personal stats and he is coachable.

Last game I saw Miller giving Fuchs personal instruction and Fuchs gave full, eye to eye connection and actively listened.

Fuchs has been described by some as slow. I’ve seen 5 times this year that Fuchs picked a guard or forward clean at the top of the key and quickly took the ball the length of the court to score on a dunk and 1 of the 5 was fouled in the act.

Recently I’ve noticed Fuchs looks thinner and seems quicker. He is working on his physique.

In this recent media event where Fuchs represented the team along with Weston, Fuchs talked about how he thinks his speed is an asset.

He just turned 20 this past November. He is playing against most big men who are older than him with several 23 or 24 years old in their 3rd, 4th or 5th year.

Schools have to be creative with the payments. Cannot be wages.

They are allowed under their Visas to do certain things for payment:
On-Campus Employment
Curricular Practical Training
Optional Practical Training
Partnership with International Organizations (501c3)

The article I posted mentioned on campus jobs….
Thanks for your additional info

While international students are allowed to work in part-time on-campus positions, such as those in the campus bookstore or dining halls, they, unlike their U.S.-born teammates, are unable to earn a profit from their NIL by appearing at events like autograph signings.

Coach_NDuke wrote: 1 month ago Fuchs has a great upside.

Coach,
I agree on his upside, he works hard, he is strong, he competes and he has passion.

He comes across great on those pressers , hope we get @ least 3 years of him

Projo article, written by Bob Flynn (?) says Fuchs was conference ROY the past two weeks.

They get such simple info wrong too many times, year after year.

Can't say I'm surprised though.

Archie also makes it sound like he could be out rest of the year saying "I don't think we'll have him back anytime soon."

That's surprising to me as he's warmed up the past two games.
