There is no rest for the women's basketball team (8-5) as they will travel to Saint Louis to take on the defending A10 tournament champion Billikens (5-8) Saturday night to kick off conference play. We split the series with them last year, beating them 76-65 at their place in the regular season but losing 59-56 in the A10 tournament semifinals in Wilmington, DE. Overall St. Louis leads the series 13-7.
Graduate guard Julia Martinez is their Swiss army knife. She's 4th on the team in points points per game with 8.7, second in rebounds with 5.8, second in assists with 51, and second in steals with 22. She almost had the first triple double in program history in our regular season matchup, scoring 14 points to go along with 14 rebounds, and 8 assists. The Billikens leading scorer is graduate guard Kyla McMakin with 16.6 points per game. She's also third on the team in assists with 21 to go along with 30 turnovers. Their second leading scorer is senior forward Peyton Kennedy with 14.3 points per game. She's also third in rebounds with 4.9 per game, third in steals with 18, and second in blocks with 5. The final Billiken in double figures is sophomore guard Brooklyn Gray with 11.7 points per game. Their leading rebounder is junior forward Tierra Simon with 7.6 per game. She also leads the team with 17 blocks on the season. Junior point guard Kennedy Calhoun leads the team in assists with 53 and steals with 24 but also has a team high 46 turnovers.
Massey Ratings gives the #100 (#77 NET) Rams a 66% chance of beating the #152 (#189 NET) Billikens, with a predicted final of 69-63

Dutat with career high 15 rebounds and an incredible 11 of those were offensive rebounds

Not to pour water on the fire, but let's not forget that URI beat SLU in St Louis last year in early January by 11 points.
It's a great victory, but not the most important one, as far as meeting between these two teams go. We saw them late in the season at the Ryan, which we lost, and then in the A-10 tourney which we lost. We are likely going to meet them the same exact way this year, and that St. Louis coach will have them firing on all cylinders by then. They won't even look like the same team.
Honestly, it's kind of their thing, they get off on that. They love to hear the announcers say "they looked like crap the beginning of the season, but now Tillett has them winning their last 11 straight".
So, this team needs to keep their heads down, keep grinding it out, and keep getting better. They need to finish top-4 to get the bye for the A10T, and then they need to have their best games at the end of the season, not in Dec and Jan.

This was the year I was hoping for us to break through and "Dance".
But since getting an at-large is no longer in the cards, we need to take the shortest path possible to win the A10T.

I'm rewatching the SLU game now as I wasn't able to see it due to work. Just reached the time out where they are down 13, 27-14, and mount a comeback at the 6 min mark of the 2nd quarter, so should be interesting from here.

The officials are ridiculous in this game. They've already called about 5 travels/carries/double dribbles on URI and it's only the 2nd quarter.
Toure was fortunate not to get T'ed for that crossface reach over a smaller SLU guard. Looks like she knocked a contact lens out of the girl's right eye.

Gotta say, the SLU announcer is good. He knows much more about our team than our own ESPN+ "announcers" do. I know they are students doing their best but its painful.

Just saw the knee injury to Toure, just before the 6 min mark of the 3rd. I think it was her right knee, but it's difficult to tell, because her right knee is the one their center backed into, and it turned at a weird angle for an instant, just enough time to do something, but the left knee buckled too at an awkward angle when she was going down with most of her weight on it.

Julia Martinez looks like her annoyingly good self in this one. It's much of her supporting cast that seems to be missing the mark in this one.

On a positive note, Sophie Sene, who is third string after Toure and Magassa, isn't doing a bad job against a good SLU team. Trial by fire. Something positive for the future.
