Football schools. For Football schools, nothing is really a problem, in today's NCAA. Just a formality really, for the haves vs the have nots.
Proving once again that it's the Cartel and everyone else.

It's Green's third school

Similar to Femi Odukale who played at Pitt, then Seton Hall and got a waiver to play at New Mexico State a couple weeks ago

Moussa Cissè played at Memphis, then Oklahoma State and just got a waiver today and will play Saturday for Ole Miss

Both of them played in every game last year UNLIKE DAVID GREEN WHO PLAYED IN SIX

It's horseshit!
Correct. Green played at Hofstra, then transferred to Louisiana Tech and played for 2 years and 2 different coaches. URI is his 3rd school and Archie is his 4th coach.
Is this quote incorrect?
Green's Coach at Hofstra got sick, Green transferred to Louisiana Tech to a Coach who had recruited him preciously. HC at Louisiana Tech then transferred to Tulsa and Green had his 3rd Coach. Didn't work out and now he is on his 4th College Coach.
Yes because that is what Archie Miller said on his show at the Mews last night. That is where I got the info and shared it. I'm thinking you can go back and replay the show?

New Mexico State is not a football school lol

They are a basketball school with less tradition than we have.

URI has rarely, if ever, gotten a break from the NCAA clearing house.

Rhody is just not part of the cartel that the NCAA caters to. Different standards are applied to teams outside the cartel. Just look at the new NIT selection process for clear proof of that.

New Mexico State is in the cartel. Ole Miss basketball? Ole Miss doesn't care about basketball. They can barely show up for their 10-2 football team.

The only way to do this is to contract with an attorney who knows Gavitt, maybe someone with a pc undergrad degree. So they can make a personal call to Gavitt. It's the RI "You know a guy?" way.

Even if it's brought up, I would not expect much new information. Schools are still waiting on official word from the NCAA as of right now. Until that comes I wouldn't expect much comment on it from coaches.

It sure looks inevitable at this point.

But yeah, the NCAA hasn't sent an official word directly to any programs yet.

Steve is not going to ask a single difficult question.
Everything is A-OK in his book.
He's getting paid by the school, and he's not going to piss off the coach.
This show is very different from an open press conference.
And no fan questions will be allowed.

It's been that way since forever. When Harrick was here, I was actually allowed to ask a question on the air, and it was a total, toady, soft ball "I love you" question, but they didn't like it for whatever reason, and they both scowled at me, like I just asked them to explain the Afghanistan withdrawal.

So, yeah, questions will not be allowed unless they are screened in advance.

Waiver Breaking News
  • Archie said there are 7 states filing the lawsuit. He said he did not believe RI was one of them but other states could join the lawsuit as it continues. Steve said he talked to Thorr earlier about it. They are reviewing and will have some comments later tonight or tomorrow
  • Archie said as for David Green that David stopped working out with the team and has been working out on his own since his Waiver was denied. He said he is probably not in the same shape he would have been in if still working with the team
  • Archie said he could think of 150 coaches who right now would be against the concept of players not having to sit out a year for their 2nd transfer
  • He said that teams would start playing guys immediately now with this ruling and that once the players play for 2 weeks it will be next to impossible to have them stop playing, they would continue all season
  • Archie mentioned the danger of having a guy play now and risk the games that he played in as far as being disqualified later. So need the facts.
  • Archie said it is not the NCAA driving this, it is some schools and conferences and presidents driving it and the NCAA then has to try to manage the process
David Fuchs Status
  • On this past Friday David reported having symptoms. So he is now in concussion protocol.
  • David will not play this weekend
  • He found he was having some symptoms iafter the PC game and into the Brown game he had some symptoms
  • "It's tough because David is coming off of 2 really effective games for us"
  • Later in the show Archie said David is a great offensive rebounder
Delaware upcoming game
  • Archie said Delaware is old, they are very experienced
  • He mentioned the win Delaware had at Xavier and the win against Brown who beat us
  • Talked about Jayre Davis, the transfer from PC, who is their best player and plays the 5 much like Bryce Hopkins does
  • Ray is a 5th year Senior and Dromgoole is a 5th year Senior. They do a lot of switching
  • Archie said they do an excellent job of inside-out, getting the ball inside to Davis who then passes back out to the 3P line to Riley and others for good percentage 3P shots
  • Steve said he watched Delaware play Robert Morris and noticed they played a 1-3-1 zone. He asked Archie about zone defense. Archie said we had not played zone, we had not worked on zone, but they might change that up and maybe think about it some for the future but not for this Saturday
Charleston Game
  • He said we got no offensive rebounding in the Charleston game.
  • Archie said in the 2nd half Charleston got 10 offensive rebounds. He said Charleston sent 4 guys into the paint for rebounding with only the shooter not hitting the glass. That was because our defensive rebounding was so bad.
Always Wright
  • Steve said Wright had increased minutes from 6 to 8 (PC) to 15 (Brown) and then to 36 minutes for the Charleston game.
  • Archie said against Brown that Wright had his best defensive performance of the year. He played 36 minutes against Charleston and did a nice job
  • Archie said "By Far Wright allows us to play more swiftly"
  • Wright was wearing the Gold Jersey at practice. Archie said this goes to the guy who tallies the Best week statistically. It goes to a player who practices hard and works hard.
4 Guards
  • Archie said Charleston enabled him to go with 4 guards
  • He said they may go 50-50 meaning they could go with 2 bigs and they could go with 1 Big-4 guards. so not exclusively but maybe half the time, not the whole game
Defense - Grade for the Year
  • Steve asked Archie for a Grade for the season starting with Defense. Archie gave the Team a F, then changed it to F-Minus and gave himself as the Coach a F because we are not improving fast enough defensively
  • Archie said "Our team's season depends on improving our defense. We need to get back and get set."
  • He said' we need to know where we are supposed to be and what we are supposed to do."
  • He said "we don't understand getting back with enough urgency. We are not in position so much that it hurts us."
  • He said "we have to want to learn and want to win. Our team needs a makeover. Lot's of slow deaths if we can't get this corrected. Back to basics. Team has not shown the growth. Getting back, getting set. "
  • "We don't rebound. Not as a group. Our guards do NOT get in there enough and rebound.
  • "We need physicality and toughness. Our progress has not come quick enough in defensive positioning. Defensive rebounding is a weakness. Getting clipped way too much. Some don't think it's their job to rebound. Need to get dirty a little"

Thanks for the update Ramster.

I was surprised to hear that Green had not been working out with the team, conditioning to throw him into the mix right away may be an issue.

He gets it. And clearly he has players who do not get the defense part of the game and the defensive rebounding part of the game. Either the players will ge the defense improvement needs or there will be other players taking their place in the lineup. That seems clear.
Archie said repeatedly that they need to get back faster on defense and get set up. He said repeatedly the guards need to especially rebound on the defensive end of the court as we are giving up way to many offensive rebounds and need to rebound better on the offensive end of the court.
Steve brought up that URI has a rebounding advantage YTD in rebounding but Archie did not care about that.

On the 2nd part of the show Weston said Archie is a defensive minded coach. He is all about defense. He wants us to get back on defense, get set and communicate on defense. He said Archie really doesn't care so much about offense as long as it is going ok.

And if his players don't get it I'm sure he will get new players. A LOT, and I mean a LOT different than from hearing from the previous HC

Yeah. I thought is was excellent. We like to speculate and armchair coach the team but it's really good to hear straight from Archie what is on his mind and what he thinks the team needs to work on most.

I know it's a lot to list, I wrote it out and then typed it in because I didn't want to miss much plus I know most don't listen to the show.

Need to get dirty a little"
Really good recap Ramster !

Sounds like Arch is very disappointed in this group so far , let’s hope it turns around !

To me the issue with that is he kinda picked the players. Not saying we ever have pick of the litter but still.

Archie is going to do it Archie’s way. And I respect that. Dan was the same. But it remains to be seen if Archie’s way will work in the current A10. I certainly hope so.

Yes after 10 games in the books, his tone seems to be a lot different about this team than what we heard from him pre-season.
Losses certainly give you a different perspective.
Our defense, which most of us have been saying all along, certainly has been a huge disappointment.
Hopefully they get it together starting Saturday.

I found it interesting that Archie talked the majority of time about defense and rebounding. Weston called Archie a defensive coach in his interview with Steve after.
One note I missed was Archie called Joe the best rebounder we have per minute. Weston said Joe is his roommate and Joe goes to bed early. Steve asked what’s early and Weston said 10-10:30 to which Steve laughed as Steve thought of early being 7:30pm. He asked Weston when he goes to bed and Weston said that is something he is working on and laughed.

Archie did not talk about many of the players except for Wright and Fuchs. Plus a short piece on Bilau rebounding and of course the Waiver news regarding Green.

Interesting while Archie was 90% defense and rebounding this board tends to be 90% offense, shooting, line up/rotation strategy and individual player rants both pro and con.

Anything on FTs ?

as for Greene not being in game shape - come on - wasn’t he practicing until he just heard he was ineligible

I wouldn’t read too much into that

I’d get him back to prectice if it’s legal

Excellent recap, Ramster. Much appreciated!

Doesn’t sound promising that DG will play much, if at all based on Archie’s comments but we will see how it goes.

Is Archie excited he could play ?

Is DG excited that he could play ? Is he now chomping at the bit to play since the news broke ?

Are those difficult questions for Steve to ask Archie ? Sheesh.

In fact, it appears that Steve was going to ask Archie to give a grade on more than one area, but in starting with Defense and Archie’s F-minus and then expounding so much on defense it became the only graded topic, time permitting guess.

Not shocking based on what we have seen so far from us.

St. Joe's and GW in the top 3 on both.
Either they are really getting after it on the defensive end and disrupting shots, or just the poor shot selection and lousy offense of their opponents. Maybe a combination of the two.

Also explains Miller’s focus on defense

Lineup changes and minutes distribution could come more from poor effort, energy, defense than from offensive performance

We are dead last in steals. Steals often results in higher percentage breakaway baskets.

In a ruling yesterday, a federal judge in West Virginia temporarily nullified the NCAA’s multi-time transfer policy, making all such transfers immediately eligible across all sports. The order will remain in place for the next two weeks until another hearing Dec. 27.

Football schools. For Football schools, nothing is really a problem, in today's NCAA. Just a formality really, for the haves vs the have nots.
Proving once again that it's the Cartel and everyone else.
Things are slanted towards the football schools and that will continue. But the reality is uri wins their games against Northwestern, Washington state and PC they are in great shape. So stop crying and win games. Also need to beat Brown and Charleston but that goes without saying.

YUP. Losing sucks, but URI wins like 2 or 3 of the games they lost and they are sitting pretty. The rest of the A10 is the same way. If you dont win the games you cant complain

Yup.

Can you mute/block words?

If so, "cartel" would be first on the list.

Stop whining and win the damn games. Simple as that.

Nah, he just took the $, traded up and now is a member of the P6.
Great for him, don't blame him and it worked out great.
Happy for Dan, always liked him.

Let's face it the system is rigged, just look at what the NCAA did to the NIT.
2 teams from each of those conference (12 teams) get auto bids regardless of whether they are deserving and on top of that are guaranteed the home court in the first round.
That is blatantly unfair.

This isn't to say that we and programs similar to ours are off the hook.
We still need to win the games when presented with the opportunities.

But let's face it with rule changes, NIL, power-conference expansion (limited scheduling opportunities), it doesn't make things easier for the mid-majors.
