2023 FCS Playoffs

Unread post by jcru »

So, the CAA got 4 of their top-5 teams into the playoffs. Official bracket:

https://www.ncaa.com/brackets/football/fcs/2023

And both #5 Albany and #8 Villanova have first round byes.

Richmond is in, by virtue of their 7-1 Conference record tie with Albany and Villanova.

Now here is where it gets a little head scratcher, like last year...

The two teams tied for 4th in the Conference were Elon and Delaware. The Conference recognizes Elon as ahead of Delaware by virtue of their head to head win against Delaware during the season. However, the playoff selection committee chose Delaware over Elon by virtue of their 8-3 overall record. Elon's 6 Conference wins were their only wins, they finished 6-5 overall like Rhody.

Rhody could have taken sole ownership of 6th place had they beaten Towson, but because Towson beat them, even though Towson only has a 5-6 season record, they own the tie breaker against Rhody, thereby effectively making URI 7th.

I watched it
Quite the experience to play in this Arena. I read up about the Arena earlier this week.
The stadium had the roof put over it after it was already completed. A lot of wood in that structure.

Congrats to Albany for pulling yet another upset this season

Pretty amazing what Albany has done.

I watched until the middle of the third quarter. Saw on the news in the morning that they won so I watched the rest. They did a good job putting together a schedule that would test the team. I think they can hang with the Jackrabbits. Let’s hope for decent weather so they can take advantage of their passing game

Someone should do a documentary or inside look at FCS football in the Dakotas. Their success across 3-4 different schools is astounding. Just dominant.

Road games on Weeknights including Friday nights favor the home team by a lot, but I never expected a 0-59.

And the 2 Montana schools. I’ve looked at some of the rosters and they get players from the upper mid west for the most part. Is high school ball that good up there? I’ve never heard of the Dakotas, Montan, Minnesota being powerhouses at the high school level

Agreed. It’s fascinating. It’s also a part of the country and culture that isn’t seen much on TV. I think a deeper look would be interesting. The success in the region is unprecedented.
