I miss having to avoid the boiling mud pits around campus while walking to class. I lost two classmates to the big one out in front of East Hall.

We lost a lot of good people to those steam pits, that's what gave them their distinctive smell. Oh sure, the University said those students just decided to transfer or they were no longer academically eligible to stay, but we know what was really happening. It was the only time in my life that quicksand was as big of an issue as cartoons and movies made me think it would be in my adult life.

In all seriousness, I would love what UMass did and to get rid of the smokestack. I do know there are plans to upgrade the service center, I wonder if a new plant could be made a part of that
