URI Opoly Question

Unread post by RhowdyRam02 »

So I bought a URI version of Monopoly on ebay, the game was made in 1991, so a bit before my time. One of the squares is for Sandcastles Restaurant and Dance Club. I've never heard of the place, but obviously it was big enough to warrant a spot on the board. Can anyone give me the scoop on the place? Where was it located? Was it really that big of a deal?

I have no first hand knowledge, and wow, this place has almost no online footprint, which is kind of rare. The only mention I could find from some Google usage is this old agenda for a Narragansett Town Hall meeting, from when its victualing license was likely batch approved with other businesses in November 1990. It looks like it might have been a restaurant on the site of the Anchor Inn, or, the middle of Burnside Avenue. (It doesn't seem like there is an 87 Burnside, so that might mean the Anchor Inn has mailing unit 87 on Burnside, or something to that effect.)

Sandcastles was at Scarborough Beach I believe, right behind that small hotel. It went through a few name changes after, but eventually the Mollicone's tore it down and built two big houses to rent out.

That is where I remember it to be. If my memory is further right, it was a two story building.

It was great because you could walk to it from Eastward Look, party all night, then stagger back home.

So here is the URI Opoly board from 1991, least to most expensive properties:

Down The Line and Old Ben Butler
The Elephant Walk, The Good 5 Cent Cigar, The Quad
Sandcastles, Kingston Pizza, URI Bookstore
Casey's, The Coast Guard House, Bonvue Inn
Bliss Hall, Ballentine Hall, Chafee Center
Mackal Field House, Meade Stadium, Keaney Gymnasium
Davis Hall, President's House, The Library
Memorial Union and Carlotti Administration Building

Instead of railroads we have the following streets: Lower College Road, Kingstown Road, Upper College Road, and Alumni Avenue.

Instead of utilities we have Frat Circle and That Ram Band

Some Chance and Community Chess type cards are:
"Lose one turn on the Elephant Walk. Advance token and do not collect $200 if you pass 'Register and Proceed'.
"URI vs UMass! Advance to Meade Stadium. GO RAMS!"
"All campus party! All tokens advance to Frat Circle"
"Down the Line. Each player places a $100 deposit in center of board for next year's apartment."
"Recite the fight song or lose one turn"

Can's say I've heard of Schiller's.

If this game was made in the late 90's/early 2000's you'd probably have a Brewmasters on there. That seemed the place to go every Friday afternoon for happy hour and $1 drafts. It's Dragon Palace of Wakefield now, across from Old Mountain Lanes
