Big East Outlook

The BE is looking to be a 5-7 NCAAT bid conference this season.
UConn is undefeated and currently leading the league.
Xavier and St. John's have been playing well overall.
Shaka at Marquette and now Matta at Butler will have them competitive.
Creighton with a healthy Kalkbrenner will be there at the end.
Also, PC and Villanova are both currently riding 5-game winning streaks.
Hopkins from Providence is becoming one of the top players in the conference.
Villanova has turned it around having freshman sensation Whitmore in the line-up.
Now if they get their best player Moore back, watch out.

Right now, to me anyway, the NCAA Tourney looks to be wide open come March. There’s a lot of good teams out there - including teams that have imperfections but could get on a roll - and many mediocre teams, too, that may turn things around enough to squeeze into the tourney. No one looks unbeatable to me, so far.

Should make for an interesting March for cbb fans, I think.

I think 2nd year HC Stubblefield will breathe new life to DePaul.
Last season's 15 victories was most for a 1st year HC at Depaul since 2002-2003.
They also won 3 out of their last 4 regular season games 21-22.

Unfortunately, they have had bad luck injury-wise this season.
Starting center and rim protector Nick Ongenda (6'11') had wrist surgery just prior to the start of the season and out 8- 10 weeks.
Back-up center Yor Anei has only played 4 games due to a foot injury.
Also starting PG Caleb Murphy has yet to play this season with a wrist injury.

As for Georgetown I think they have better talent on their roster than their record indicates.
Ewing helped his job security by their miracle BET run in 2021.
Last season with 0 conference wins was a disaster.
A team with a current starting line-up of Spears, Heath, Murray, Akok, and Wahab should show much improvement.

Needless to say, Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing is on the hot seat this season. After going 0-21 in Big East games last season, Georgetown surprisingly decided to bring Ewing back for another year. Ewing did have to start over with three new assistant coaches. A move that was reminiscent of DePaul’s 0-18 team under Jerry Wainwright.

Georgetown comes into Thursday’s game looking to end those losing streaks. The Hoyas may come in a bit rusty as they were on a nine-day break between games over the Christmas holiday.

Today's match-up #2 UConn at #22 Xavier should be one of the best games today.
At noon televised on FOX.
Dan Hurley vs, Sean Miller will be good viewing.
Both teams seem to be pretty loaded, giving the edge to UConn at this point.

My biggest takeaways and surprises for the early part of the BE season.

Providence (6-0) has been impressive, and an excellent coaching job by Cooley.
Rebuilding his line-up after replacing all 5 starters.
Hopkins has emerged as one of the leading candidates for BE-POY.

Also, Marquette (6-1) has been off to a strong start, after being picked by many to finish in the middle or bottom half of the conference.
I always admired Shaka as a HC and he put together a nice roster.

I felt Xavier (6-0) would be strong this season, but not quite this good.
Having Sean Miller makes a difference.

Crieghton (3-3) has been disappointing but went through a slump when their big Kalkbrenner had mono.

Also, Villanova at 2-5, but still not having their top returning player Justin Moore hurts along with the retirement of legendary coach Jay Wright.

I thought this would be the break-out season for St. Johns and expected much more than starting off 2-5.
They have the pieces in place to have a good season.
Mike Anderson (25-38) better start winning, or his seat will get very warm.

I still see the BE getting 5-6 bids to the NCAAT.

Also, a bit surprising to me is UConn’s position due to road losses, so far. But, I think Dan will get them to a top 1-3 regular season finish despite the recent road losses.

Creighton, has some work to do. They are currently at 9-8 (3-3 in conf) for 5th place. Seton Hall has work to do, too.

Right now, I see 4 solid tourney teams and two on the fence. I am not sure if 6 will make it unless a few teams get hot soon.

North Carolina has been disappointing since many had them pre-season #1.
Miami, Clemson, Virginia, and Duke should also compete along with a few others.
The ACC does have a bunch of good teams but none currently in the top 10.

Just looking at the teams currently; Xavier, PC, Marquette, UConn, and Creighton will all probably get NCAAT bids.
Teams on the bubble: Seton Hall, St. John's, and Butler.

Joel Soriano (SJU) will be most improved player and is one of top bigs in the conference averaging 16.5 pts/ 12 rebs.

They had flight issues yesterday and today and arrived prior to game time at St. John's.
Will be interesting to see how they come out.
