The University of Rhode Island head to Chestnut Hill for their first true road game of the season when they take on the Boston College Eagles. The Eagles have been a familiar foe as of late as this will be the fourth matchup of these two teams in the past three years. The Rams have had some recent success against Boston College, winning 5 of the last 6. The Eagles have had a topsy turvy season so far with decent wins against George Mason & Wyoming but have also lost at home to Maine (where they were 20 point favorites) & got rolled by 16 to Tarleton in the Virgin Islands.
Boston College is coached by Earl Grant, who is in his second season in Chestnut Hill after a successful stint at College of Charleston. They were picked to finish 13th out of 15 in the preseason ACC poll. On the hardwood, the Eagles are led by old rival Makai Ashton-Langford. MAL, who is leading the team in both points & assists has been in college so long that he faced Jarred Terrell at the Ryan Center. Rhody can play off MAL, daring him to shoot the 3 as he is a putrid 2-17 from deep. They will need to keep an eye on Cincinnati transfer Mason Madsen who is averaging over almost 5 attempts per contest. The Eagles have balanced scoring & their only other double-digit scorer is guard Jaeden Zachary.
As for Rhody, they built on their solid performance against Tulane to secure the win against Illinois St. One thing that definitely needs improvement is scoring from the starts who are not named Ish. Rhody did something I never thought would be possible; they won a game where only 1 started scored. They were 0-13 from the field while attempting 0 free throws. Yikes! Does Freeman jump back into the starting lineup after having back to back strong games?
Although the Eagles have struggled a bit this year, Rhody will need more output from people other than Ish & Bray. Winning on the road is never easy, even if it’s the Conte Forum were students will be strolling back to campus after the Thanksgiving break. Boston College probably will be favored by about 8.5 points. My prediction Boston College 66 – URI 64. Go Rhody!!
