2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season

2021-22 was a very successful season for URI WBB

The A10 had 2 teams invited to the NCAA 68 Team Tournament - UMASS and Dayton
  • UMASS was the AQ winning the A10 Tournament. UMASS was a 12 seed and lost 1st round to 5-seed Notre Dame 89-78
  • Dayton won the A10 Conference. Dayton was an 11-seed and played 11-seed DePaul in a play-in game winning 88-57. Dayton then played and lost to 6-seed Georgia 70-54
The A10 had 3 teams invited to the 64 Team Women's NIT - URI, Fordham and VCU
  • URI lost to Quinnipiac 61-50 @ URI
  • Fordham lost to Bucknell 71-64 @ Fordham
  • VCU beat Stony Brook 56-48 @ VCU; VCU plays @ Seton Hall March 21 @ 7pm

Tammi will be starting her 4th year at URI. She may be active in the Transfer Portal during the coming weeks as she looks for opportunities to upgrade the team further

Did 99% chance of staying at URI just go to 100%?

If she wouldn’t leave for her beloved Virginia, I imagine she’ll be here for at least a couple more years. If the program keeps improving Thorr will have to increase her compensation.

When Tammi said 99%, she mentioned that she had already turned down Virginia. I have no idea what school could be included in that 1%, but hopefully she's here for a long time.

New contract runs through the 2031-32 season. WOW.

"We extended this offer midway through the conference season to express to Tammi how much we appreciate the program she is building at URI. In order to grow the program into a championship contender year in and year out, we felt it was important to make a long-term commitment.

Midway through the Conference Season would be about February 1. Nice.

Seems like a really nice extension for both sides - URI pockets a good sum if someone wants to scoop her up quickly, but if she stays and keeps winning, the buyout gets lower while (presumably) leaving us in a better position for the next coach.

I for one will admit, I have been watching just as much of the womens NCAA tournament as the Mens.
Was thinking how cool and how many fans would of went to Bridgeport to support the women? I could see Rhody Women dancing in the next year or two with coach T!

Very well deserved contract!!!

Unless she wins 20+ games, then another year gets automatically tacked on. Credit to Thorr, he's been very aggressive with extensions after making a great hire with her

She played 25 minutes, scored 25 points, 10-11 FG and 7-8 on 3 pointers

Had to leave a lasting impression on Tammi and her staff

This shows me that Tammi makes a great impression on her opponents' players. You can be sure that her in-game demeanor, enthusiasm, and strategy doesn't go unnoticed. Players want to play for coaches like her.

Looks like the team picked up a new point guard from France, who was not previously announced. She'll probably be one of the candidates to be the starting PG in 2022-23.

She may be a candidate, but a good chance she may redshirt.
I see Lassiter as our starting PG.

My feeling on our starting 5:

Lassiter (G)
Covington (G)
Cairns (G)
Squires (F)
Magassa (C)

With losing all our top players and most of our scoring, I see this as a tough transition season.
This team will have its struggles, especially in the early part of the season with all the new faces.

I beg to differ. Based on Debroise's solid stats in junior national team play and the fact that France is a European power, it's quite possible that she will be the top playmaker for Rhody in 2022-23.

In other news, Emmi Rinat scored 16 points recently in a key 65-63 win for Israel over Germany in the U20 European Championships (Division B). It's likely she will have a breakout season for the Rams.

Emmi is wearing jersey number 30 in the tournament. A few pictures.... Notice the Keaney Blue basketball shoes.

I agree with you about Rinat and think she will have a very productive season.

I still doubt Reiss starts true freshman Debroise (especially from overseas) to handle the PG duties.

Lassiter is a grad transfer with plenty of experience at P5 level and started 18 games at Rutgers last season.
In this transition season with our roster, I think Reiss brought in Lassiter to start at PG.

I don’t think Ines Debroise will redshirt. Tammi is not bringing her here across the pond to sit out a year, not with her International experience.

I don’t see this as a transition year at all. Elmore and Williams came in last year as 5th year Grads from Seton Hall and PC. Tammi knew they were 1 year only. Foppossi and Tahane were also expected to leave. Cairnes beat out 5th year Vargas mid season - so we started the year with 5 players Tammi knew we’re gone at the end of the season.

Tammi this upcoming year brought in 3 transfers from A10 teams, all were A10 6th Man POY award winners. Tammi knows the system. Transfers immediately eligible, can Transfer within the A10 Conference and Tammi coached against these 3 players PLUS all 3 come from good A10 programs:

Emma Squires - Richmond. 6’2” F. 5th year. 2021-22 6th man A10 POY
Madison Hattie-Covington - VCU. 5’10” G. 6th year. 2019-20 6th man A10 POY
Tenin Magassa - Dayton. 6’5” C. Will be a JR. 2021-21 6th man A10 POY and was All Rookie Freshman.

Team those 3 up with Dolly Cairnes, Sayawni Lassiter - Rutgers transfer this summer, Ines Debroise, Emmi Rinat, Maye Toure and other talented returnees and incoming Freshmen and Tammi has the makings of a team that will challenge for another NCAA bid by winning the A10.

Tammi has added better shooters to this years team and a solid center in Magassa. Don’t sleep on our incoming 6’5” freshman center from Estonia either. She will improve quickly playing against the likes of Magassa in practices.

Tammi already has 3 freshmen who committed in their JR years. All 3 participated in Tammi’s recent summer camp and I heard good things about all 3. Sophia Vital, Katie Ledden and Eva DeChent already make up a great Class of 2023 before their SR years even start. Dan Hurley style High School recruiting. Know who you want and recruit them early. Create an environment with a winning attitude that good players want to be part of.

And don’t have transition years.

Yes Ramster, Tammi has filled in nicely with who she added, and the future does look bright with the recruits.

But still, this could be a tough season with trying to get all the new pieces to mesh and missing so much scoring power from last season.

I am very curious to see how this team performs 22-23 but tempering any high expectations.
It was disappointing how we ended last season, especially losing our opening A10T game and first NIT game at home.

Losing the last 3 games was tough last year but to be honest it wasn’t completely surprising to me. Tahane and Cairns were our best shooters, most accurate. Foppossi, Williams and Elmore could be streaky shooters. Foppossi took a lot of shots and was not a high FG or FT percentage shooter. When hot she was really hot but not often enough. Point is the 4 incoming transfers have plenty of experience. Give this team the summer, the OOC schedule and the A10 Conference games and they should be ready for the A10 Tournament.

Emmi Rinat and her Israeli team took 3rd place today in the Under-20 European Championships - Division B after beating Slovenia in the 3rd place game. Emmi scored 14 points in today's game. The top three teams of the tournament were promoted to the "A Division" for next summer, which includes regular European powers such as France and Spain. This was a big achievement for Israel as they have not played in the "A Division" of the Under-20 European Championships since 2006.

Emmi averaged 12.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2 assists. She played great defense against the top players of Israel's opponents. She wore her regular #30 national team uniform (she wears #33 at Rhody). The FIBA Europe website lists her at 5'8" (1.72 m), but she is really like 6'0" (1.84 m). It's unclear why the FIBA site and the Rhody athletics site list her at 5'8".

Go here for more stats and pictures of Emmi... and videos of the Israeli team's games this summer:

THREE SPORTS. THREE GAMES. THIRTY DOLLARS.

Get your East Stand ticket to the last home football game of the season (Nov 19 vs. Albany at 1:00 pm), and get a lower level ticket to both Rhody Basketball team's first home games, November 7th against Quinnipiac for the men, and November 11th against Dartmouth for the women's team. All for only $30*!

Women's home opener is 11/11 vs. Dartmouth. Looks like the season starts 11/8, so not sure if they have a road or neutral game before the Dartmouth game or if that's when we're opening our season

Ramster not sure what your current thoughts are, we discussed this a couple of months ago.
But I am still going with my original prediction of our starting 5 and my thoughts from then:
Lassiter (G)
Covington (G)
Cairns (G)
Squires (F)
Magassa (C)

With losing all our top players and most of our scoring, I see this as a tough transition season.
This team will have its struggles, especially in the early part of the season with all the new faces.

I feel that UMass will easily be the odds-on favorite to win the A10 with all their firepower coming back.

But I am still going with my original prediction of our starting 5 and my thoughts from then:
Lassiter (G)
Covington (G)
Cairns (G)
Squires (F)
Magassa (C)

77,

I don’t see this as a transition year at all. Tammi added experience and improved outside shooting which was a weakness on last years team. Not a surprise to have so much talent as Tammi enters her 4th year at URI. She has quickly turned this program around and it continues trending up

I don't like predicting the starting lineup because I trust Tammi immensely to start the best players and to substitute effectively. This team is deeper and more talented than last year's team. Predicting a starting 5 is even tougher when 8 of 14 players are from outside the US.
More important who finished than who starts.

Tammi brought in 3 transfers from A10 teams, all were A10 6th Man POY award winners. All 3 were starters at Top A10 Programs Richmond, VCU and Dayton.

US - 6
France -6
Israel - 1
Estonia - 1

Emma Squires - Richmond. 6’2” F. 5th year. 2021-22 6th man A10 POY
Madison Hattie-Covington - VCU. 5’10” G. 6th year. 2019-20 6th man A10 POY
Tenin Magassa - Dayton. 6’5” C. Will be a JR. 2021-21 6th man A10 POY and was All Rookie Freshman. From France
Dolly Cairnes is a returning starter who will be a JR.

Team those 4 up with these 10:

Maye Toure 6'2" JR from France. Physical, good rebounder, strong defensively.
Sayawni Lassiter 5'10" GRAD Transfer from Rutgers
Emmi Rinat 6' SOPH from Israel. Can shoot the lights out when hot.
Sophie Phillips 5'7" SOPH
Howa Kamera 6' SOPH from France
Sophi Sene 6'3" SOPH from France
Anete Adler 6'5" FR from Estonia
Chantelle Blagrove 5'9" FR
Anaelle Dutat 6' FR from France
Ines Debroise 5'9" Freshman from France

Tammi already has 3 freshmen who committed in their JR years. All 3 participated in Tammi’s recent summer camp and I heard good things about all 3. Sophia Vital, Katie Ledden and Eva DeChent already make up a great Class of 2023 before their SR years even start. All 3 visited URI this month. Dan Hurley style High School recruiting. Know who you want and recruit them early. Create an environment with a winning attitude that good players want to be part of.
