2022-2023 Women's Basketball Season

2021-22 was a very successful season for URI WBB

The A10 had 2 teams invited to the NCAA 68 Team Tournament - UMASS and Dayton

• UMASS was the AQ winning the A10 Tournament. UMASS was a 12 seed and lost 1st round to 5-seed Notre Dame 89-78

• Dayton won the A10 Conference. Dayton was an 11-seed and played 11-seed DePaul in a play-in game winning 88-57. Dayton then played and lost to 6-seed Georgia 70-54

The A10 had 3 teams invited to the 64 Team Women's NIT - URI, Fordham and VCU

• URI lost to Quinnipiac 61-50 @ URI

• Fordham lost to Bucknell 71-64 @ Fordham

• VCU beat Stony Brook 56-48 @ VCU; VCU plays @ Seton Hall March 21 @ 7pm

Tammi will be starting her 4th year at URI. She may be active in the Transfer Portal during the coming weeks as she looks for opportunities to upgrade the team further

"We extended this offer midway through the conference season to express to Tammi how much we appreciate the program she is building at URI. In order to grow the program into a championship contender year in and year out, we felt it was important to make a long-term commitment.

Midway through the Conference Season would be about February 1. Nice.

I beg to differ. Based on Debroise's solid stats in junior national team play and the fact that France is a European power, it's quite possible that she will be the top playmaker for Rhody in 2022-23.

In other news, Emmi Rinat scored 16 points recently in a key 65-63 win for Israel over Germany in the U20 European Championships (Division B). It's likely she will have a breakout season for the Rams.

I agree with you about Rinat and think she will have a very productive season.

I still doubt Reiss starts true freshman Debroise (especially from overseas) to handle the PG duties.

Lassiter is a grad transfer with plenty of experience at P5 level and started 18 games at Rutgers last season.
In this transition season with our roster, I think Reiss brought in Lassiter to start at PG.

Foppossi and Tahane were also expected to leave. Cairnes beat out 5th year Vargas mid season - so we started the year with 5 players Tammi knew we’re gone at the end of the season.

Tammi this upcoming year brought in 3 transfers from A10 teams, all were A10 6th Man POY award winners. Tammi knows the system. Transfers immediately eligible, can Transfer within the A10 Conference and Tammi coached against these 3 players PLUS all 3 come from good A10 programs:

Tammi already has 3 freshmen who committed in their JR years. All 3 participated in Tammi’s recent summer camp and I heard good things about all 3. Sophia Vital, Katie Ledden and Eva DeChent already make up a great Class of 2023 before their SR years even start. Dan Hurley style High School recruiting. Know who you want and recruit them early. Create an environment with a winning attitude that good players want to be part of.

Losing the last 3 games was tough last year but to be honest it wasn’t completely surprising to me. Tahane and Cairns were our best shooters, most accurate. Foppossi, Williams and Elmore could be streaky shooters. Foppossi took a lot of shots and was not a high FG or FT percentage shooter. When hot she was really hot but not often enough. Point is the 4 incoming transfers have plenty of experience. Give this team the summer, the OOC schedule and the A10 Conference games and they should be ready for the A10 Tournament.

The end of the season was difficult psychologically. Many believed that Tammi was a goner to Virginia and this was before the season was over.

Emmi Rinat and her Israeli team took 3rd place today in the Under-20 European Championships - Division B after beating Slovenia in the 3rd place game. Emmi scored 14 points in today's game. The top three teams of the tournament were promoted to the "A Division" for next summer, which includes regular European powers such as France and Spain. This was a big achievement for Israel as they have not played in the "A Division" of the Under-20 European Championships since 2006.

Emmi averaged 12.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2 assists. She played great defense against the top players of Israel's opponents. She wore her regular #30 national team uniform (she wears #33 at Rhody). The FIBA Europe website lists her at 5'8" (1.72 m), but she is really like 6'0" (1.84 m). It's unclear why the FIBA site and the Rhody athletics site list her at 5'8".

I don’t see this as a transition year at all. Tammi added experience and improved outside shooting which was a weakness on last years team. Not a surprise to have so much talent as Tammi enters her 4th year at URI. She has quickly turned this program around and it continues trending up

I don't like predicting the starting lineup because I trust Tammi immensely to start the best players and to substitute effectively. This team is deeper and more talented than last year's team. Predicting a starting 5 is even tougher when 8 of 14 players are from outside the US.
More important who finished than who starts.
