URI Women's Postseason Basketball - NIT - 2021-22

Unread post by SGreenwell »

So, the women's NET is #60 as of March 10, which almost certainly takes them out of the running for an NCAA tournament bid. However, the field for the women's NIT is picked on March 13, followed by the brackets on March 14. They're back to a full slate of 64 teams, so it's highly likely that URI would be picked, and might even host a game or two. According to page 17 of the record book, URI has only made one NCAA tournament, and never made the NIT, so this would be the second postseason tournament ever for the Lady Rams.

That would seem a really weird setup. I would assume that the NCAA would tell the NIT who they're selecting, but that would alert every bubble team whether they made the tournament or not

The NCAA women's selection show is also on March 13, so I don't think there's much of an issue. Like, the NCAA selection committee usually prepares multiple brackets before the final conference tournament games are played, and they just eliminate the brackets as those games are played. I imagine the NIT works kind of the same way. I think the NIT also just picks 64 teams, and then seeds them by the next day, with more of an emphasis on geographical pairings that make economic sense.

BUMP! Because Dayton and UMass were picked for the NCAA tournament, URI is the automatic qualifier from the Atlantic 10. Seeds and match-ups aren't announced yet.

GoRhody has a short release posted:

https://gorhody.com/news/2022/3/13/wome ... t-bid.aspx

KINGSTON, R.I. — Rhode Island will make just its second postseason appearance in program history after receiving a bid to the WNIT Sunday. The field of 64 was announced with a mix of Power 5 notables and mid-majors. With Dayton receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, Rhode Island (22-6) will make a WNIT appearance by way of automatic berth as the second-highest seed in the Atlantic 10.

The full bracket, including opponent and locations, will be released tomorrow, March 14, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Full release can be viewed here.

So, the bracket should be posted any minute now, but the women's NIT site is going at a snail's pace. Either they're updating it now, or, everyone is bombarding it to find out the info, haha.

I didn't see seeds, does anyone know if we'd get another home game if we win?

I think that's kind of always "TBD" with the NIT. I think in the past, the men's team hosted some games despite being the worse seed, either because arenas weren't available or travel considerations.

It would seem from looking at the 2022 WNIT Bracket that the winner of the “Quinnipiac at Rhode Island” game will play the winner of the “Maine at Boston College” game.

Apparently the WNIT is unseeded. But URI is in the top corner of the bracket so I'm believing they are a 1 seed and will not be convinced otherwise.

URI was down as much as 7 but comes on strong to go up 26-23 at the half. Nice bench contributions from Rinat and Vargas. Need to get Cairnes and Elmore involved.
