Rhody barely advances to the second round of the A10 conference tournament after a close win against an awful Duquesne team. They had about 20 turnovers which they will need get under control for tomorrow night. The only reason they won this game is because they shot well from deep. The Rams now face the 6th seeded Richmond Spiders. Richmond comes into this game losers of two straight (Dayton & St Bonaventure). The Rams look to avenge a loss to Richmond at the Ryan Center where they blew a 15 point second-half lead. Rhody was up 7 with 5:50 to go after a made three by Jalen Carey. David Cox used his patented time-out after a made basket. It clearly was a great use of a time-out URI went scoreless for the next 5 minutes and Richmond closed the game on a 15-1 run for the win. The Spider’s forward Tyler Burton, who had a double-double in his last game against URI, is the team’s leading scorer at 16.5 per game as well as their leading rebounder at 7.4. He is also there best three-point shooter, shooting it a hair over 38% on the season. Richmond is a big team, starting three forwards all 6’ 7” or bigger. Grant Golden got a bunch of open looks from deep against whichever Mitchell twin was covering him at the time. I think Rhode Island can keep this close but I don’t think they will have enough to get the win. My prediction Richmond 68 – URI 64. Winner of this game takes on VCU in the quarterfinals tomorrow night. Go Rhody!!

We likely only have one more day of this for 6 months, so I’ll say this half seriously:

If we win tomorrow does this board start to get a little excited/optimistic?

I hope we win and get a bid. It would be like GTown last year.

Wouldn’t even be quite as dramatic as they were the lowest seed.

What gives me hope (not a lot of it) is that we know this team can compete against any team in this conference. We just shoot ourselves in the foot more often than not

We still need FOUR MORE WINS for any of this to matter. It's gonna take at least two more to pique my excitement level.

I suspect the answer will be moot by the time we go to bed tomorrow.

We barely squeaked by the worst team in the A10 who now lost 17 straight games.

Mooney knows how big this game is for him with all their senior leadership.

I think we lose by double-digits.

Richmond has not won a game since Feb 25

Richmond hasn’t played a game since March 4

I like that URI got a game in already in DC, got used to the court, the rims.

I think we pull a surprise and beat 6-seed Richmond tomorrow night.

Then we face 3-seed VCU the next night with 2 games under our belt - VCU will have played no games.

Richmond fans will go ballistic if we beat them.
The fire Mooney billboards will go up immediately.

Their last 2 losses weren't terrible; 2 pts against Dayton and then at Olean.

Maybe the 6 day rest will help them.

I cannot see us executing well in a close game in crunch time against a decent team. We aren’t disciplined and consistently good offensively enough to blow anyone out. So I’m gonna go with a 8-10 pt loss where we largely have given up at about the 25-30 minute mark. A tech by 1 of the twins sprinkled in there somewhere. I’m usually the optimist.

I wouldn't be too surprised if we win tomorrow, but I see no evidence this team can win 5 in 5 days. Friday they'll go up big against VCU then run out of gas (like 3 years ago against SBU) and it's all over.

He’s not changing it now. Going short vs St Joseph’s when they started a 6’11” and a 6’10” says Cox stays with Walker and Martin.

We had almost 20 turnovers against the worst teem in the league, with the Larson dude guarding Walker (!) for Pete’s sake.

We’re not the favorites to win, rightfully so, but I’m also not going to pretend this is some David vs Goliath matchup. Richmond has plenty of their own issues

Yes. This is my biggest fear. I'd have 2 years of buy in come rushing back to me only to get an anvil dropped on my testicles by VCU.

But again, Patrick Ewing should be a cautionary tale - you don't hire/fire for 5 games of basketball.

David Cox has had 2 years with his own guys and culture to look back on. Look at Kevin Ollie at UConn. He won with Calhoun's guys.

If they weren't able to make an impact immediately, coaches show you who they are in 3/4. A 5 game winning streak shouldn't change that.

It won't happen. Look at yesterday. We actually shot the ball well and still almost lost to one of the worst teams in the country... We were that sloppy. Duquense had a kid on their team that was missing wide-open shots and layups on a consistent basis. He looked like he should be playing in the adult league I play in....Richmond has talent. We will keep it between 6-10 most of the game but lose.

Richmond has size, it would be absurd to not start one Mitchell. Likewise Martin should play vs Burton. Burton too good of a rebounder for one of our smallish guards. And please stay with Sherod when he is the game
