The women’s team looks to close out their home schedule with a game against St. Bonaventure for Senior Night. Per the URI press release, they will be celebrating seniors Chanell Williams, Dez Elmore, Marta Vargas, Marie-Paule Foppossi, & Manu Tahane. I am not sure why MP is considered a senior considering she only played 3 collegiate seasons & is listed as a junior on the Rhody roster. Let’s hope the emotions of playing on Senior Night don’t come crashing down once the game tips-off. This game potentially has the making of the men’s Senior Night debacle during the 2017-18 season where they got crushed at home by 30 against an awful Saint Joseph’s team. Let’s implore Coach Reiss has the ladies focused to take care of business before heading to Dayton to close the season.
St. Bonaventure has struggled this season, amassing only 4 wins in conference play. They have lost 4 games in a row with 3 of those by double-digits. Guard Asianae Johnson leads the Bonnies with 18 points per game. She can score, but the good news is she struggles from deep (2 for 14), so the defense can sag a little bit off her daring her to shoot while playing her to drive. Guards Tori Harris & Maddie Dziezgowski are St. Bonaventure’s top deep threat, both with 35 or more made 3s this season. Forward I’yanna Lops may cause a slight match-up problem downlow with her height (6’3”). She is averaging 8.3 points & 6.3 rebounds on the season.
In their last game, Rhody surpassed the 68-point threshold this bringing their record to 15-0 when the do. This is a game where that should happen again. As the far superior team, look for the Rams to take care of business in front of the home crowd. My prediction is after a slow start, URI will pull away & win this one decisively. URI 75 – St Bonaventure 59. These players deserve a big crowd on Senior Night, so I will see you there at the Ryan Center. Go Rhody!!
