Is there any doubt that we have one of the worst collection of guards in the country, the most unlikable front court players and the most clueless coach who was at least supposed to be good at recruiting?

Makhi and Makhel played excellent tonight.
They did everything.
In fact, I wish they shot more 3s, dribbled up court, and played on the perimeter because our guards are A JOKE.

I am a die hard fan, and I didn't watch a minute of the game. That's what it's come to.

Groundhog Day . We watch the very same game over and over and over . Is anybody sure that they haven't been rerunning the same game tape for
the last couple of months because I am beginning to wonder . Can you be charged with plagiarism for copying your own work ?

Say what you want about the Mitchells but at least they showed up, combined for 27 pts/16 rebs/5 blks.
The backcourt was another story, Shep and EA combined for 0 pts.
I actually feel that overall, our frontcourt has been good enough for us to be respectable this season.
Our guards not so much.

The guards are as bad as you get and that is what wins in college basketball. Guard play in college basketball is everythingJersey77 wrote: ↑2 years ago Say what you want about the Mitchells but at least they showed up, combined for 27 pts/16 rebs/5 blks.

Agree Jersey, the twins played well tonight, and I think you're right about the front court for the most part to. Of course they have their issues and there is stuff that needs to be cleaned up, but there is a lot there to work with as well. The guards on the other hand are practically non-existent out there most nights.Jersey77 wrote: ↑2 years ago Say what you want about the Mitchells but at least they showed up, combined for 27 pts/16 rebs/5 blks.

Watched the whole game. We are terrible! We might be the only team to shoot 46% from the field and score in the low 50's and lose by 20! The twins played well and I thought competed. I have already commented about our guard play in past post but this was an all time low point. Coach Cox is lost and has lost this group. What a train wreck!

The worst…I repeat…the worst group of guards in Kingston in the 30+ years I have followed the team.

Re: 2/22 | St. Bonaventure | 7:00PM (CBSSN)
Is it the guards or the coach who doesn’t understand guard play. He took an all-time great PG and moved him off the ball.
Last year Ish was playing a decent PG as a freshman and now he plays the 2.
Again is it the guards or the coach???

Has to be both, he’s not out there shooting or handling the ball, but he’s responsible for the game plans and player development, or regression in this case.

El Ahmin has just been invisible all season.
Leggett is not a true point, can’t put the ball in the hoop or pass.

Carey is the best guard they have now he should play 30 minutes. Sad to say but every game is pretty much the same

Re: 2/22 | St. Bonaventure | 7:00PM (CBSSN)
Wasn’t Leggett supposed to be the savior? The one good thing about this team is when they make a coaching change nobody will care if a player threatens to leave unlike 4 years ago. I could care if anyone on this roster left.Rhody15 wrote: ↑2 years agoSheppard isn’t nearly this bad, he proved that last year.Rhodyhooopz wrote: ↑2 years agoIs it the guards or the coach who doesn’t understand guard play. This is not saying much. No team is ever winning big with Carey as your best guard. He just isn’t that good.

Re: 2/22 | St. Bonaventure | 7:00PM (CBSSN)
They could also not be as good this year because all the defenses focused on Fatts last year and now they are the focus and can’t step up…just a theory. Maybe they are what they are. And yes this comes back to Cox as the recruiter, talent evaluator and player developer…

That may be true but his ceiling is much higher than the other guys so give him the minutes and maybe he can cut down on the TO’s. Nothing to lose at this point

Re: 2/22 | St. Bonaventure | 7:00PM (CBSSN)
Would you be bothered that much if they didn't stay? Martin seems like a good kid and his brother was an icon at URI, but more of a role player(which you need), Thomas is a nice story for everyone, but lets be realistic in that he is the 7th or 8th man on a good team at best and Walker is okay, but not going to move the needle for this program too much. Walker and Martin would be good guys to keep, but I am not losing any sleep over it with a good coaching hire in this new world of transfers the most important thing and you can move from the bottom to closer to the top much more quickly.Rhody15 wrote: ↑2 years ago

You could Keep all of them except the Ish's and Shep and substitute them for guards WHO CAN ACTUALLY SCORE AND SHOOT and we'd be worlds better.

Schmidt took a MAC transfer (Adaway) averaging 7-8 ppg and doubled his production in the A10. We took a MAC transfer averaging 16 ppg and turned him into a bit role player who put up a goose egg tonight.

Our guards not so much.
The Mitchell's are frustrating but damn....it's not their fault we have guards that are ZERO threat to score. I mean they make it worse for our guards sometimes, but if they had EC, JT, JG and guys like that in the front court we have a very different tune about them.
Carey has legit been our best guard. He's at least the only one who can even drive to the basket and finish! And he's making threes!
El Amin is insanely passive. Just can't create his own shot. Can just shoot set shots.
Shep is too physically weak and disappears like nobody I've ever seen. He can create his own shot but just isn't an alpha. He needs someone better than him on the court for him to be effective consistently. Imagine if he were eligible for the 19/20 team! Cox would have had a for sure NCAA tournament team.
Malik is a forward playing guard.
Bassy ain't ready.
Leggett just isn't fast or athletic enough to do the things he wants to do.
Every single one of them is just a role player. Cox just constructed an entire team of role players. No stars.

Keep too many of these players and we will be in the same boat next year no matter who are coach is. We need guards that can shoot distribute and play defense. These guys all seem like bench players to me. Who knows. The only thing I know is that the most exciting part of the season is when Cox gets let go and the new coaching search begins. We can all agree on that.PeterRamTime wrote: ↑2 years agoSebastian enrolled early and is holding his own out there. Keep that dude. Can we get a coach that can get his players to run a competent motion offense and have some freaking shooters!? And how about we be good at running the fast break a little bit since we invented it and all!RamStock wrote: ↑2 years agoKeep too many of these players and we will be in the same boat next year no matter who are coach is. Even with Hurley our offense struggled a little too much. A lot of iso bs. Standing around.

Our starting guards have a combined 3 points.
When we look back on this season, we’ll say the guards were the worst we’ve had in many many years.
They bring next to nothing to the table.
Maybe pre Keaney...but that doesn't count because that was 100 years ago.

Hurley gets his second T for hyping the crowd, place was going crazy, they knock off Nova at home on a late bucket, sitting near the top of the BE, ranked, will be dancing next month - how much fun must that be?!
Just look at our program now... what a sad sack of shit.
