Week #6 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

No A-10 team appears in the rankings of both polls. St. Bonaventure and Loyola Chicago get other votes in both the AP and Coaches polls.

The A-10 OOC record showed some improvement and now stands at 85-60, .586.

URI continues to struggle and has shown only small improvements since the season opener. In its 7-3 record URI has recorded no significant wins and two of the losses border on the bad. With exams coming up, the game tonight against Milwaukee will be the only one in week #6. A loss tonight will just about end any Ram chances of dancing.

The combined won-loss record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 74-52, .587, a small increase over previous week.

Reflecting an unimpressive home court win over a low ranking Sacred Heart, the key URI metrics moved slightly in both an up and down direction. The URI NET Ranking dropped, but at #88 remains the fourth highest in the A-10.

NET - 88, down 5
BPI - 75, up 1
Pomeroy - 81, up 2.
Sagarin - 89, down 4.

Two games on Monday in the A-10:

URI at Milwaukee, 8 PM. On ESPN+.

Radford at George Washington, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

Sacred Heart at Columbia, 8 PM. On ESPN+.

Albany at Boston College, 8 PM. On ACCN.

Got to win the game tonight by at least 10 to get any improvement in our NET, etc. I hope it’s not a high bar.

For those interested in tracking potential future HC candidates a couple interesting games the next two days.

Tonight, Dennis Gates takes his 6-2 Cleveland State squad on the road to Oklahoma State where they are +12.5. Cleveland State currently on a 6 game winning streak.

Tomorrow, Bob Richey takes his 7-3 Furman squad on the road to UNC where they are +11.5.

And it’s official. They lost 61-57. I saw it was televised on the ACC Network and watched the last three minutes. I think it took twenty minutes to complete: horrible. Entire sections of empty seats. Good luck against Duke, Eagles.

There are no A-10 games on Tuesday and the only other game involving URI OOC opponents is;

Georgia State at Mississippi State, 8 PM. On ESPN+/SECN+.

Also, Tulane canceled a game at Texas A&M. because of Covid situation within the program. It has also canceled its game versus Grambling on Dec,18.

I saw someplace that the ACC has lost 8 buy games this year. Not good for a conference that considers itself basketball royalty.

This may be a down year for the ACC, but the BE looks strong.
There are 4 teams that can easily contend for their title: Nova, UConn, Xavier, and Seton Hall. St John's is a sleeper and dare I say our enemy PC.
So far, I wouldn't be surprised if they get 6 teams (possibly more) in the NCAAT.

The A-10 may be generally struggling in the OOC schedule but it is presently 7-1 versus the ACC and is guaranteed to have a winning record as there are just two more OOC contests in the regular season between the leagues.

A-10 vs ACC
W URI 57 BC 49
W URI 71 BC 65
W SLU 79 BC 68
W VCU 67 Syracuse 55
W SBU 68 Clemson 65
W Dayton 76 Miami 60
W Dayton 62 Va Tech 57
L Fordham 66 Miami 72

There are two games left that will be both be played this Friday 12/17 in Charlotte as SBU will play Va Tech and Richmond will meet NCSU.

The only two games of interest on Friday involves A-10 teams who are participating in the first ever Hall of Fame Shootout being held at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC. This one day event is comprised of four games with the A-10 teams playing in games #2 and #3:

St. Bonaventure vs. Virginia Tech, 4 PM. On ESPN2.

Richmond vs. NC State, 6:30 PM. On ACCN.

They are really taking the Bonnies to the woodshed.
The Bonnies look totally out of sync and some bad shot selection.

Dayton just beat Va.Tech 5 days ago.
The Bonnies might not be such a shoe-in for the A10 title.

Besides I also don't expect the Bonnies to win the A10T.
3 games in 3 days may be too much for them with all the minutes their starters get.

Well Ramster, not untypical for Schmidt to use a short bench.

Also their entire bench from last season entered the portal this year, and they have a completely new bench (8 players).
Not sure yet how comfortable Schmidt is with all those new faces.
