URI travels to the Midwest to take on Patrick Baldwin Jr & the Milwaukee Panthers. As I am sure many of you know, the 4th overall recruit Baldwin Jr shunned powerhouse programs like Duke, UNC, & Kentucky & decided to stay locally to play for Milwaukee. What also helped this future top 10 NBA draft pick in his decision to stay in Milwaukee was the fact that his father is the 4th year coach of the school. This 6’9” guard, who is averaging 17 & 8, provides a match-up challenge for Rhody. Hopefully Malik Martin is ready for the challenge as I see him having to cover Baldwin. His backcourt teammate Deandre Gholston (Preseason 2nd Team) also has some height to him at 6’5” & is averaging 16 & 5. These two players are averaging over half of their team’s points. Even with these two great players, they Panthers have only won 2 of their first 8 games as of this writing. (They are playing Friday night in Colorado.) Some other fun facts about the Panthers’ roster is that they have ex-Celtic Vin Baker’s son, Vin Baker Jr. They also have Manute & Bol Bol’s cousin Moses Bol who is not so surprisingly 7’1”. Damn that family runs tall. Unfortunately, Bol only averages a few minutes per game but would really enjoy an Antwan Walker dunk over him. For the Rams to win this game, they need to play good team basketball. Baldwin Jr is going to get his points. Just need to limit his teammates, especially Gholston. In the Sacred Heart game, Tyler Thomas’ defender would provide help defense & ended up leaving Thomas open. That can’t happen with Baldwin’s defender in Monday’s game. Shout out to Makhel who has done a much better job taking care of the ball; 0 turnovers in his last two games. The Rams have 7 players averaging between 20 – 28 minutes all of them are averaging between 8 and 11 points. So the offense is definitely spread out compared to Milwaukee. I am feeling a double-double from Walker Monday night. This is Rhody’s last true road game before conference play, so go get the W. URI should come in as about 5-point favorites. As long as Rhody doesn’t go ice cold from the field, URI wins this one 70-64. Road games are never easy, but I am feeling a win. Go Rhody!!

Good write-up Spooky, thanks

Baldwin will be difficult to contain, and I am afraid that Gholston is capable of going off on us similar to Tyler Thomas.
As with any team we play, it will take a strong defensive effort to win.

The Panthers fell apart after I posted that, and lost by 11. Only scored 2 points in the final few minutes.

Colorado starting 5 is tall/big (6'9", 6'9",6'8'/259)
Looks like Milwaukee forced them to the outside.
Both teams had their struggles offensively.

Here’s 1 thing you don’t want to do vs a team that has the best player on the court…let them hang around and keep it a 1-2 possession game inside the last two minutes. Then they can just give the ball to their NbA prospect and let him work. Have to create separation and keep them at arms length or beware.

Ramster now that you posted that, it really gives me reason for concern. The ultimate jinx.
But remember, that may not be truly indicative, several of Milwaukee's losses were without Baldwin.

If you can’t beat the #321 team with or without their beat player who is a freshman and hasn’t done all that much anyway when he played it’s going to be a very long season.

True and we should beat them.
But Baldwin is by far their best player averaging 16.5 pts, almost 8 rebs, and he was sorely missed.
3 of their losses weren't terrible at Florida, at Colorado, and Yale (favored to win the Ivy).
Still no excuses if we don't win.

A good A10 team wins this. An average to bad one losses.

This is a game where I’d start Martin and have him play a box and 1 type defense on Baldwin and make their other players beat us.

My prediction is we don’t start Martin. Baldwin scores 10-12 pts quick, and we go down 6-8… Martin comes in, and we take the lead by half. We go up double digits early in the second half, but Milwaukee takes the lead late… Baldwin takes over in the final 2 minutes, and Rhody losses by 3.

I hope I’m wrong!

I texted a friend of mine before the game that all we have to do is contain Thomas, and we will win by 20… He texted me back 5 minutes in, saying, “Did Rhody scout this team because Thomas has been wide open early on!?”

You can usually hear the coach and bench scream.
“SHOOTER” when they want you to focus on a specific player. I didn’t hear that until he hit his first few shots.

I think both Baldwin and Gholston can go off on us early. I just don't like the defensive matchups here, wish they started Martin.
Oh well, I also hope you are wrong.

How many teams (ever) with that NET ranking have a 5* future NBA lottery pick?
They played a decent P5 team very tough on the road.
We should win but it won't be easy.

It should be easy. But, I can see the scenario where 5* guy gets off early and we trail and bring someone else in who shuts him down happening...would be as predictable as calling a TO when we've cut a 14 point deficit down to 12.. .

NYGFan, you have watched enough Rhody basketball to know that no game is going to be easy, especially on the road.

After the loss to PC, the outcomes of the four remaining OOC games became sort of a bellwether for our prospects for the season - the need to sweep all four games and end OOC play at 10-3. The Rams passed the first one at home versus Sacred Heart and Milwaukee with an NET #319 on the road represents another land mine, and road tests for this Ram team are a challenge. We have played a total of 5 games away from the Ryan Center and have lost three of them. The current NET rankings for those three loses are #39, #152, #228. Milwaukee may have given Colorado a good game, but as a frame of reference so did Brown who in their Paradise Jam game led the Buffs for 30 minutes only to lose by two in the final seconds. Our prospects of dancing are pretty glum, but a loss at Milwaukee will cement it.

Obviously if the team is that bad despite having one great player, you do whatever it takes to control that one player....deny the ball as much as possible, double him, play box and one, whatever. If this guy comes out and scores 40 and we lose, there's no excuse for that.

If Rhody could lose at FGCU, it can certainly lose tonight at Milwaukee. Who knows what type of performance they will put forth.

The way our team has played, we certainly have no bye games.
I expect this one to be close.

For the old-timers that follow Rhody hoops - URI has had previous success on the home court of the Panthers winning a tournament. UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena was formerly known as the MECCA having first opened in 1950. It was where Marquette used to play (and very close to their next two bigger and more modern home arenas). The Rams played there in the Milwaukee Classic in December 1979. URI beat Fairfield in the first game and Marquette for the championship. Jack Kraft was the coach. Jimmy Wright, Horace Pappy Owens, Gilson DeJesus, Marc Upshaw, Phil Kyd, and Roland Houston were on that team.

Pretty big difference in NET and overall W/L

FGSU NET 155 (7-3)

MILWAUKEE NET 322 (2-7)

This would be a considerably worse than FGSU

Personally I think we demolish the 6.5 point spread. Juicy as one Rhody Football Fan would say it

Fordhan NET is 169 which tells you how bad Milwaukee must be at NET 322

There is a huge trophy displayed in the Keaney Gym Lobby from this Tournament - it's about 4 feet tall

Ramster I hope you are right and would be pleasantly surprised.

As I said before, I think Milwaukee is better than their NET.
They played some decent teams and was without their best player for several of their losses.

I don't think you understand how good Baldwin is. Have you watched this team, or are you simply going off a NET ranking? I've only watched them twice, but they are not an easy opponent.

A team like Milwaukee needs their superstar to have a chance in most games. When he plays, they are far from a ranking of 322. They are similar to FGCU. We can definitely lose this game if we play a second half like we did against them.
