Rhode Island head coach Tammi Reiss has announced a reload of transfers and one true freshman to join the squad for the 2022-23 season. In-conference transfers Madison Hattix-Covington (VCU), Tenin Magassa (Dayton), and Emma Squires (Richmond) join true freshman Anete Adler from Estonia. The four join incoming freshman Chantelle Blagrove who's addition was announced last fall.

Anete Adler
Tallinn, Harjumaa, Estonia - 6' 5" - Center

Played the 2020-21 season in Europe for Estonia-NKML on Team G4S Noorteliiga. In four games, Adler averaged 17.0 points and 12.0 rebounds while dishing out 3.3 assists. She represented her home country Estonia and averaged 3.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in the 2019 FIBA U18 Women's European Championship (Division B). Adler also participated in the NBA Academy Program, a year-round basketball development program that provides top high school athletes from outside the U.S. with a holistic approach to player development. From July-August of 2021, she took part in the NBA Academy Women's Virtual Program, an eight-week basketball and leadership development program for more than 40 of the top female high-school prospects from overseas.
Reiss on Adler: "It's an honor to welcome Anete to our Ram fam! She has the experience of playing at the international level while also getting the opportunity to develop as a player with the NBA Academy. We are so excited for her to join the program and for her future in a Rhode Island uniform."

Madison Hattix-Covington (VCU)
Killen, Texas - 5' 10" - Guard - Ellison

Hattix-Covington joins the Rams from VCU. She averaged 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds last season, and was the first VCU player in program history to be named the Sixth Woman of the Year in 2019-20. In VCU's WNIT second-round matchup at Seton Hall, the Killen, Texas product poured in 14 points and grabbed seven boards. While at VCU, Hattix-Covington was a member of the 2020-21 A-10 Championship team.
Reiss on Madison: "We are so excited to welcome Madison to our Ram family! Madison is an explosive athlete that can defend multiple positions, get out in transition and finish at the rim, rebound and attack the paint in the half court. Madison comes from a championship culture and understands what it takes to win. She does all the little things that don't necessarily always show up on the stat sheet, and is a great teammate that will make an immediate impact on our program."

Tenin Magassa (Dayton)
Morsang-Sur-Orge, France - 6' 5" - Center - Jean Moulin

Magassa comes to Kingston after spending two years at Dayton. The Morsang-Sur-Orge, France, native finished fifth all-time in Dayton history in blocks with 113. Last year, Magassa posted three double-doubles, and recorded a season-high 14 boards in the Flyer's NCAA First Four win over DePaul. She was named the 2020-21 A-10 Sixth Woman of the Year while also earning a spot on the All-Rookie Team after her freshman campaign.
Reiss on Tenin: "We are very excited to welcome Tenin to our Ram family! She possesses great size, strength and athleticism. She is a tenacious defender and rebounder! She is relentless on the o-boards, and is an excellent shot blocker with great timing and length. She also has the ability to dominate the paint offensively and score over either shoulder. Tenin has huge growth potential and we are excited for her future as a Ram!"

Emma Squires (Richmond)
Kingston, Mass - 6' 2" - Forward - Tabor Academy

Squires, the 2021-22 A-10 Sixth Woman of the Year, appeared in all 30 games for the Spiders last season. The Kingston, Mass native came off the bench in 22 of those games, averaging 20.9 minutes per game. Squires averaged 10.8 points per game while shooting 44.1 percent (52-of-118) from long range in her senior year with the Spiders. Squires poured in 20+ points in four games of 2021-22. The forward had a career-high 28 points twice, in wins at Ohio and FAU.
Reiss on Emma: "We are thrilled to welcome Emma to our Ram family. Emma is a very offensively skilled post player with the ability to score in a multitude of ways; on the block or on the perimeter. She's an excellent 3-point shooter that can stretch the floor for us offensively… I saw this first hand, as she went 7-for-8 against us last year. Emma is a positive, energetic player that fits our culture here at URI. We are so excited to start this journey with Emma and help her reach her full potential as a basketball player!"

Announced last November 2021

Chantelle Blagrove
Rhode Island head coach Tammi Reiss announced the signing of 2022 guard Chantelle Blagrove Monday. "We are very excited to welcome Chantelle to our Ram family," said Reiss. "She is a big, physical, athletic guard who loves to play in transition and finish at the rim."
Currently a senior at Niagra Prep in Ontario, Blagrove is a physical point guard with size, elite quickness, and a high basketball IQ. She's very explosive and is a tremendous on-ball defender. "The part of Chantelle's game that I love the most is her ability to defend," added Reiss. "She loves that end of the floor." As a sophomore, Blagrove averaged 6.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Niagra Prep did not play a 2020-21 season.
The 5' 9 guard plays in the AAU circuit for Kia Nurse EYBL and is a native of Ajax, Ontario. "She is a slasher who can get in the paint and finish," said Reiss. "Chantelle is a culture kid, she checks every intangible box that we look for in a player and a person. We can't wait to get her into that Keaney Blue"

Not much news here , so I'll add this nugget:

Eva DeChent not only broke 1000 points for her high school career but also recently scored FIFTY TWO POINTS in one game. 😳

Can't wait to see her destroy the A10.

They were both Coached by their father in HS

Albany is in 1st place in the America East.
Imagine if both of the twins make the NCAA Tournament?
I'd love to see URI and Albany schedule a home-home series starting next year.

I think our freshmen are all capable of making an impact here, some maybe sooner than later.
But I don't expect "big things" immediately, the transition usually takes a little time.

The good thing is we will have a solid core returning and the freshmen can ease their way into it.

I don't see any of these new recruits starting next year. Having a sophomore starting PG backed up by a freshman may be problematic. A seasoned transfer PG might be good insurance.

The days of Tyson Wheeler starting from the moment he arrives on campus are over. Well, after beating out Sean Colson. That said, this girl is still super talented, and I would expect her to become a larger part of the picture as the season progresses. Both of them really. Look at Dutat.

It is not unusual for players to improve significantly between freshman and sophomore years, Dutat was very good this year except for her shooting. Dutat is a F, not a G. I would not have wanted Ines being our primary PG at the end of this season, although I think she will be fine next year. Our weakness at season end was ball handling under pressure. I'd feel more comfortable with a Sr/G PG transfer on the roster.

I know she's a forward.

I'm referring to the fact that she was only a freshman, but is a major contributor by season's end. Last game against SLU: 6 pts, 13 rebounds, 5 steals, off the bench.

I wasn't really impressed with DeBroise. My gut is both frosh PG prospects are going to pass her on the depth chart by season's end.

To answer your previous question re: Lassiter. She was "capable". She was a fair PG, sometimes showed poor decision making. I don't think she was a bad PG, but her performance definitely leaves room for someone else to emerge and improve the production at that position.

I don't know. Maybe. Who can truly predict the future?

I just know in some of these later games she didn't really pass the eye test. Should be interesting. Should be competitive. I wouldn't really count any of these three recruits out unless/until they prove differently. This recruiting class of freshman, by all accounts, ought to be good.

Once upon a time, I attended a URI WBB game in Keaney that was a sell-out. As a URI season ticket holder I had front row seats across from the URI bench that year. But, I sat in the balcony so that my friends two young girls could be on top of the action. They were thrilled. It can be like that again.

Great grad transfer. 15.4 ppg, 2.4 steals, 7.5 rebounds. Shooting percentage and assists to turnover ratio not great but Dee Dee's a baller.
