2021-22 Overall Contest Predictions Summary
Posted: Sun Nov 14, 2021 4:27 pm
by Obadiah
The contest attracted 55 players, the smallest participation since 44 played in the first contest. Is this a fall-out from the Covid pandemic and less interest in Cox-led URI basketball, or simply no juice for the contest itself? Who knows?
ramster and Billyboy78 offered the most bullish predictions at 25-6 and at the most pessimistic end was spookydog who also predicted a losing season at 15-16. The most popular bets with 10 players each were the 20-11 and 19-12 records.
In the bonus contests, raminwarick offers up the highest team scoring average at 77.77. In the Top Scorer component, Jeremy Sheppard was picked as top scorer by 30 posters with DeanDome88 heading the list with a 16.48 prediction. Leggett came in second attracting 9 bettors and LamonteUlmer15' s prediction headed that list at 16.70. Finally, most see a dip in home atttendance his season, but ramster is consistent in his optimism by predicting an average of 5,500 while luke sees an average of 2,644 as more likely. Big difference in this one.
Note: For easy reading, I have clustered the predictions, first by overall record, followed by A-10 record, and then by team scoring sequenced from highest to lowest. Please review the summary and let me know via PM, if I have made any error with your prediction. Good luck to all!

Based on the attendance numbers for the first 2 "meh" opponents of BU and Bryant, looks like any average attendance predictions under 5,000 are in trouble. Small sample size so far, though.

Games on winter break will most likely bring down the average, hopefully the ticket office can come up with some promo's to get people in the building.

It’s all about winning.
Win and fans will show in solid numbers:
Snow or rain or sunshiny day
Day or night
Good opponent or bad opponent
A10 conference opponent or OOC opponent
School in session or not in session

And there are 6 of them, 40% of the home games, including the one on Thanksgiving weekend.

The bonus awards of team scoring, top scorer, and home attendance are unaffected. The overall record prediction is the challenge since no one will have that correct since we are down to 29 games rather than 31. But we will have to wait and see if URI can restore those games by scheduling other teams having similar problems. How about playing Iona, for example.
If the season ends with less than 31 games played, the winner may be determined by who predicts the closest to actual.

An update on bonus contest components as of Dayton game:
Top Scorer: Makhel Mitchell - 11.04
Team Scoring: 67.63
Home Attendance Avg.: 4,841 Given there are only two more home games, unlikely the average will rise above 5000. In fact, average will probably end up at a level not seen since Jim Baron's last two seasons

Cox would probably say it's low because we're such a balanced team and anyone can go off any given night.

Yes, and I checked the records back to 1948-49 season and could find no lower Top Scorer average than the Makhel's current 11.0. The two closest are Cutino Mobley at 13.3 in the 1997-98 season and Jared Terrel's 13.7 in the 2015-16 season, the year EC was out with the ACL tear. In past years, top scorers are in the 15-18 ppg range. Also most years URI has three scorers in double digits, sometimes 4 scorers like 2011-2012 when Malesvic was 4th with a 11.2 average.
Another unique Cox achievement in player development to add to his resume.

Mobley averaged over 17 in 98.
The 13.3 was in 94-95

Sorry, didn't notice the last couple posts until now - If you go to page 43 of the
online record book, it has the top scorer by PPG for each year, going back to 1948-49. Here are all of the seasons at 15 PPG and under:
83-84 Todd Bozeman 11.9
94-95 Cuttino Mobley 13.3
73-74 Randy Hughes 13.3
15-16 Jared Terrell 13.6
02-03 Brian Woodward 14.1
01-02 Troy Wiley 14.1
84-85 Bryan Mitchell 14.1
09-10 Keith Cothran 14.3
20-21 Fatts Russell 14.7
91-92 Jeff Kent 14.7
16-17 E.C. Matthews 14.9
58-59 Steve Madreperla 14.9
74-75 Jim Williamson 15
Makhel is currently at 11.3 PPG, although it's 12.07 PPG if you only count A-10 games.

To answer your question, the win over AIC will count. Also I haven't decided whether to declare a winner of the overall contest or not, given the original schedule of 31 games will not be met - the bonus contests are unaffected, BTW. My inclination is make the award based on closest to the final result. There are three outcomes to URI final regular season record - 16-13, 15-14, 14-15. Using the "closest" determinant - at 16-13, the winner looks to be RhodyFanNotAlum, at 15-14, the winner looks to be rambone 78, at record of 14-15 spookydog is clearly the winner.

The Saint Louis game signaled the end of the home schedule for URI basketball and the winner of the Home Attendance bonus has been determined. A total of 72,207 fans witnessed the 15 game schedule bringing the per game average to 4,814. The closest prediction to that actual number was 4,824 which makes RhodyRams12 the winner. Congratulations!

Here's where we stand with the contest as we head into the season finale at Saint Joseph's on Saturday.
Overall Contest: A duel between rambone 78 and spookydog. A URI win over St. Joe's gives the prize to rambone and a loss gives it to spookydog.
Team scroring: Through 28 games, the current scoring average is 67.25. NYGFan_Section208 with a prediction of 67.24 is in strong position to take this one!
Top Scorer: Through 28 games Makhel Mitchell leads with 10.89. This is a no brainer since only one person picked Mahkel as top scorer at all and that was rhodyblue12. Several ways could change this, but all are implausible. For example, one way would be Makhel scores at his average against St. Joe's and Jeremy Sheppard needs to score 26+points or if Mahkel doesn't score at all, then Jeremy needs to score 18 points to take top scoring honors..
