Week #1 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

The 2021-22 college basketball season gets underway on Tuesday and we begin following the performance of URI opponents and other interesting games in CBB with this weekly thread.

Note: This thread is relevant as long as URI is in "hunt" for a spot in for the post season play, especially the NCAA. It is hard to keep up this thread on a weekly basis, if the Rams postseason prospects evaporate, so in that event the weekly format will end and be replaced by a Rest of Season - Games of Interest thread.

In pre-season polls, St. Bonaventure is ranked #23 in the AP poll and #24 in the Coaches Poll. The only other A-10 school to get any preseason recognition is Richmond which receives some votes in the others category in both polls.

Key URI metrics at end of 2020-21 season:

NET - 108
BPI - 95
Pomeroy - 100
Sagarin - 111

In a unique situation, all 14 A-10 teams will open the season on Tuesday and all open at home.
Our attention will be focused on the BU at Rhode Island game, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

In the other A-10 games, all on ESPN+

UMBC at UMass, 7:30 PM

Columbia at Fordham, 8 PM

UIC at Dayton, 7 PM.

Delaware at Davidson, 7 PM.

Stony Brook at George Mason, 7 PM.

St. Peter's at VCU, 6 PM.

Siena at St. Bonaventure, 7 PM.

NC Central at Richmond, 7 PM.

Rider at Duquesne, 7 PM.

Maryland-Eastern Shore at Saint Joseph's, 8 PM.

Sacred Heart at La Salle, 8 PM.

St. Francis (PA) at George Washington, 8 PM.

Central Arkansas at Saint Louis, 8 PM.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

Salve Regina* at Brown, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

Dartmouth at Boston College, 8 PM. On ACCN, ESPN+.

Brewton-Parker* at Georgia State., 7 PM. On ESPN+.

Abilene Christian at Utah, 8 PM.

Florida National* at Florida Gulf Coast, 7:30 PM. On ESPN+.

Morehouse College* at Harvard, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

Fairfield at Providence, 7 PM.

Milwaukee at North Dakota, 8 PM.

*Non D-1 school and the game is not an exhibition, but is a regular season game that is included in the overall record, but will not be counted in the NET rating.

In other noteworthy games:

In the State Farms Champions Classic double header at Madison Square Garden:

#3 Kansas squares off against Michigan State, 7 PM. On ESPN.

#10 Kentucky vs. #9 Duke, 9:30 PM. On ESPN.

Davidson and us handling business. Every other A10 team is either in trouble or at least being given everything they can handle.

Last night A-10 teams won all their openers with the exception of La Salle which lost to future URI opponent, Sacred Heart, in OT. Several others had close calls - VCU, a 57-54 winner over St. Peter's, St. Joseph's over Maryland - Eastern Shore, 69-67, and GW with a win over St. Francis (PA), 75-72.

With last night's opener versus BU, URI celebrated its 20th season in the Ryan Center. If you include last season's home opener win against Seton Hall, Rhody has racked up 19 wins in home openers with the only opening loss being to Norfolk State in 2012, Hurley's first season.

After a very busy opening day in the A-10 and nationally, Wednesday's schedule is tame and the only game of interest is a curiosity. Saint Louis U. after pounding home a 96-61 win over Central Arkansas, returns to Chaifetz for a second consecutive night to take on NAIA Harris-Stowe State, a historically Black school located adjacent to the SLU campus. I'm sure you won't want to miss this one and it's on ESPM+ at 8 PM.

Yes Ramster, Jeriah Horne is a player. I followed him when Nebraska was recruiting him. He was the #1 HS player in Kansas City. and the Husker fan base was extremely disappointed when he decided to transfer after his freshman year. He can score from close in as well as the perimeter and will stretch the defense.

He was Colorado's 2nd leading scorer and their top rebounder plus shot 90% from the FT line.

I can see Martin defending him when he is on the floor.

I think Davidson will be very good, Foster Loyer the PG was what they needed.
They handled Delaware an experienced team with 2 all conference players pretty easily.

Davidson has the size and perimeter scoring to match up with anyone in the conference.

In a score I know everyone was dying to hear about, last night Saint Louis beat NAIA Harris Stowe, 127-54. The Billikens led by 42 at the half. Really, why bother?

Only a few games of interest on Thursday evening.

George Washington visits #21 Maryland, 6:30PM. On BTN. Another chance to see Fatts in action. Maryland favored by 18 points.

PC takes on Sacred Heart at the Dunk, 6;30 PM. On FS1. Two future URI opponents in game that will provide some comparative clues. Line: PC -18.5

South Carolina State at Charleston, 7 PM. Line: Charleston -17.5. Game is part of Rising Coaches Classic.

……..maybe I add really, really good coaching committed to a system, seems to recruit players to fit that system, wherever he finds them……

A bit of a surprise to see GW leading Maryland at the half 30-29, but when you go 0-9 from treyland that's what happens.
