The University of Rhode Island Rams tipoff the upcoming 2021-22 season Tuesday night against the Boston University Terriers. The Rams are looking to rebound (ooooh, a basketball pun) after a disastrous 10-15 season the previous year. As David Cox stated after Thursday night’s exhibition win over JWU, “We are reclaiming our culture.” To reclaim their culture, they will need to get the win against regional foe (& the Projo’s Bill Koch’s alma mater) Boston University. This is the first time in ten years that they have faced off against one another. The Terriers, who are the preseason pick to win their conference, are led by Joe Jones, who enters his 11th season at the helm. The key to stopping this team will be shutting down Javante McCoy. This 6’5” guard is the Patriot League preseason player of the year who averaged 16.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists & shot almost 50% from the field. Along with McCoy, they have another preseason all-league player in Walter Whyte. This 6’6” G/F put up numbers (13.5 points & 6.8 rebounds per game) that would make even Heisenberg proud. As will be the case with most of this out of conference schedule, Rhody’s size down low with the Mitchell twins & Antwan Walker should be too much for most teams. Throw in freshman forward Ileri Ayo-Faleye (if he plays), they should have an advantage in the frontcourt. Hopefully Sheppard gets his shot back in this game as he shot quite poorly in URI’s exhibition game. I am looking forward to what the 2 Ishmaels do in this game & how much time will they spend on the court together. My prediction is that this will be a double-digit win for URI but not quite as exorbitant as their win more than a century ago over BU in February of 1909 when they won 80-8. After playing a tight first half, Rhody pulls away & wins this one 73-61. Go Rhody!

I expect this game to be very close and would not be surprised with any outcome. BU returns all 5 starters and have the preseason conf play of the year. A slow start or another poor shooting performance can make this a tough game against an experienced team. Not the typical cupcake you'd expect in game 1.

I agree with Shinze on this one. It should be a very close game. Last year, the Terriers lost a close game to Colgate in the Patriot league tourney. Colgate lead Arkansas in the dance by 18 before they folded. This is not an opening game cupcake.

Vermont is picked to finish 2nd behind Stony Brook this year by League Coaches. Justin Mazzulla from RI and GW transfer came off bench in Exhibition vs St Michaels and likely warned himself a starting role. Tomas Murphy from RI and Northeastern dnp the Exhibition.

They are the best team in the Patriot League this year and McCoy may be the best player on the floor. When a team has one player that can take over it worries me but this is not a team we should lose too.

They are the best team in the Patriot League this year and McCoy may be the best player on the floor. When a team has one player that can take over it worries me but this is not a team we should lose too.

In addition to McCoy and Whyte, they have all conference defensive player Sukhmail Mathon (6'10"/225). He is a legit center who averaged 11 pts/8 rebs/56% FG, and will be a good test for our bigs.

We will be favored and should win, but they aren't a cupcake, and expecting a competitive game.

Any idea if it has impacted the team in anyway. BU won the conference 2 years ago and was set to go to the tournament before it was canceled, and was picked to win the conference with the conference pre-season player of the year on the roster.

For the JWU exhibition, my card was in the bucket with my wallet, keys, etc. going through security. The guy asked if that was my vaccination card. I just said yes. He didn't even look at it.

The BU schedule likely just hasn't been updated yet since its a URI stream. The URI website removed ESPN+ and it was never listed on any of ESPN's schedules. Unless they update it again before game time, looks like no stream for this one. Very disappointing.

I agree with this completely - Cox cable only is unacceptable in this day and age. I was super pumped to start the season and happy to not have to hunt for a stream (ESPN + has been a surprisingly nice option the last few years). Oh well, I guess I can watch the UMass game or the Fordham game or some other shitbag program that has an actual stream for fans.
