Amazing balance that in a 12 team league that 3 teams are (4-3) and 5 teams are (3-4)

Last weekend of season this Saturday:
  • URI @ Elon is huge. Winner will go to (5-3) in the tough CAA FCS league, loser goes to (4-4).
  • William & Mary can go to (5-3) with a win on their home field vs Richmond in The Capital Classic - so a big game for William & Mary who had wins vs Albany, Towson, Elon and the huge win @ #4 ranked Villanova.

Albany (1-6) @ Stony Brook (3-4) 1pm
Villanova (6-1) @ Delaware (3-4) 1pm
URI (4-3) @ Elon (4-3) 2pm
Richmond (3-4) @ William & Mary (4-3) 3:30pm
Towson (3-4) @ James Madison (6-1) 2pm
Maine (3-4) @ New Hampshire (2-5) 1pm

Is this the biggest Rhody football game in 36 years?

I assume 36 years ago was the last playoff appearance (1985). How could this not be the biggest game since then? I thought maybe 7-4 with a win vs UMass might be enough but UMass is basically a low end CAA team and we have to win at Elon to make the playoffs. Biggest game in 36 years makes total sense to me! Go Rhody it’s been more than a generation since they made the playoffs.

Back in 01 we got off to a hot start, but struggled down the stretch, losing something like 3 of our final 4. Beyond those games, I can't recall a single game with post season implications beyond this one.
It's always good when your final game of the season is meaningful... If we win are we a lock to get in?

With only 14 at large bids, can we leap over teams? we were ranked in the 30's prior to the weekend. UNH isn't going to help too much unless a lot of teams ahead of us get upset. Either way, hopefully we get the win.

Green are teams we beat, Red we lost to

William & Mary could go to 5-3 with a win at home vs Richmond

Elon could go to 5-3 with a win at home vs URI

That would put Villanova, James Madison, William& Mary and Elon in FCS playoffs ahead of URI. FCS might not take 4 CAA Teams

URI wins against Brown, Bryant and UMASS were not of significant strength

Of our 7 CAA games only Villanova has a winning record (6-1)
All of the other 6 teams we have played have losing records

URI needs to win Saturday @ Elon

Albany (1-6) @ Stony Brook (3-4) 1pm
Villanova (6-1) @ Delaware (3-4) 1pm
URI (4-3) @ Elon (4-3) 2pm
Richmond (3-4) @ William & Mary (4-3) 3:30pm
Towson (3-4) @ James Madison (6-1) 2pm
Maine (3-4) @ New Hampshire (2-5) 1pm

2018 if we held on 51 more seconds against Maine we would have been 7-4 (5-3). Every CAA team that had that record made the playoffs that year including Delaware who we beat. Elon made it in with a 6-5 (4-3) record, so we should have been in. Considering we were 6-5 (4-4) it seems like our Elon loss was a virtual play in game.
2001 if we beat Maine we should have gotten the Atlantic 10 auto bid based on the tiebreakers. If we beat either of Richmond or UMass we should have been in. We would have been 9-2 (7-2). Every conference team with a 7-2 conference record got in including Hofstra and William & Mary, two teams we beat that season.
1995 if we win our second to last game against #8 Hofstra we're in the conversation. If we beat #8 Delaware in the last game of the regular season we would have been Yankee Conference champions.

That's it, as best I can tell those are the only games with real playoff implications since 1985. As for if we're a lock with a win, no 8 win CAA team has missed out on the playoffs since the playoffs expanded to 24 teams

Rhode Island beat UNH 28-3
Rhody snaps a three-game FCS losing streak and is now on a two-game winning streak with last week’s 35-22 win over FBS UMass. The Rams are now 7-3. In my opinion, if they win at Elon next week, they are going to make the bracket at 8-3 with an FBS win, despite no ranked wins. If they lose to Elon, a 7-4 Rhody team with an FBS win is likely left out of the field.

JMU beat W&M 32-22
JMU gets its fourth then-ranked win. However, Weber, UNH, and Delaware are no longer in the polls. JMU should beat Towson next week to finish 10-1. That will be a Top 4 seed. The question is how the committee views ranked wins, and if they think the Dukes have enough “quality wins” to be the No. 2 or 3 seed. If W&M drops out of the polls after this loss (I don’t think they should, but we’ll see what other voters do), JMU could have zero wins against currently-ranked teams.

For W&M, the Tribe is 6-4 overall and 6-3 vs. the FCS. It needs to beat Richmond next week for a shot at the bracket. If it does, a 7-4 W&M team that is 7-3 against the FCS with a decisive win against a likely seeded Villanova team will get strong consideration. But if Rhody goes 8-3 with an FBS win, would the CAA get a fourth team in? JMU, Nova, and an 8-3 Rhody team would get in before W&M. The Big Sky has five locks, in my opinion. The MVFC will get 4-5. The SoCon could get 4, as explained above. The Southland will get two. The Big South could get two, depending on the KSU-Monmouth result. Is there room for a fourth CAA team?

Yes, we need to win Saturday. Elon is 5-5, the committee is not taking a 5 loss team.

If we can't beat Elon we probably don't deserve to be in.

Gotta at least beat one decent team.

We also beat Stony Brook that beat Delaware and Maine who kicked our butt. Albany is a “decent” team despite their record. This conference is no joke. It’s going to be a tough one vs Elon, especially given our injuries.

Back in ‘85 I was 36 years old and on a beautiful fall afternoon watched Tom Ehrhardt lead the Rams to a win over Richmond in a first round playoff game. Capacity crowd and I think the final score was something like 24 to 16. Little did I know that game would be the last time the Rams would be in the playoffs. I’m hoping that ends this afternoon. A win and our road record would be 4 and 2. Will we get a home game? Probably not. Similar to the basketball team a couple of years ago losing to Fordham and Lasalle, some people quit this year after losses to Maine, Towson and Villanova.
Go get’em Rams! The streak ends today!!!!

This is the biggest game in 35 years for this program, and this board is dead.

Elon is no joke, we will have to play very well to win this game.

I wish I was confident we'll win, but we have a chance.

Have to get a lead, and even then, Elon has come from behind several times this season.

Just hope that if it's close, Fleming makes the right calls. That could be a problem, but hoping for the best.

It's Saturday (a lower traffic day for the board in general), and they laid two eggs in a row at the "peak" of the season. I think plenty of fans are probably still in the "prove it to me" mindset, and URI needs to win to get them back on board.

I got FloFootball after we went 5-0. I watched the three games we lost and cancelled Flo. I think I'm bad luck so I'll just check scores.

Hopefully next season the winning seasons will continue.

They weren't good enough....but maybe if they had been healthy they might have been.

Fleming for sure will be extended if he hasn't already been.

If they could only upgrade the stands......I know it's been planned, but still too far away.

At least things are looking up. The talk of dropping the sport or dropping down is gone for now.

7-4. Congrats on a good season! Trending the right way with many players on both sides coming back. These guys seem to fight for each other and I'm happy for those seniors who are leaving the program in a better place then when they arrived.

It doesn't happen over night! Playing in meaning games like this is something to build off of. I'm hearing we are involved again with some quality transfers who will improve the talent. The offensive line is extremely young and Kevin Brown and Jaylen Smith give us two quality backs. Also hearing there could be an announcement with facility upgrade! Can anyone connected verify this?

7-4 is a damn good season. We’ll be fine, the vast majority of our team will be back next year plus all of the guys that were out for the season.

Counting last Spring season that’s 3 out of 4 seasons with winning record. 1 game from a playoff bid. Trending in right direction. Losing Kevin Brown was a big loss if he comes back healthy we should be very good next year.

Would like to see a bit more consistency out of Hill. At times he can make incredible throws, but then other times the ball seems to sail or dive. With that said, think we need a few more playmakers at WR, especially with Frimpong and Pires leaving.
At times the defense seemed to be a step or two slow. Only able to stop Elon once today, although they did limit them to a FG on a few drives.

I'm not yet convinced we will be left out of the playoffs.

I'll be surprised but not shocked if we get in.

The record is good enough, but the margins of defeat in the games we lost, will likely keep us out.

And we didn't really beat anybody good...but stranger things have happened.

You might be right Rambone. This guy says URI is now the 1st team out……

First team out

Rhode Island (7-4) CAA

Rhode Island would have been in as an at-large team if not for a Week 12 loss to Elon. With that loss, the Rams are the first team out of the 2021 FCS playoffs. Despite having an FBS win over UMass, Rhode Island's win over Delaware has only become less impressive as the season progressed.
