The UMass schedule this season is very similar to what it played some 50 years ago - BC, UConn, URI, and Maine are all on it. The only historic opponent missing is UNH.

I mean this - UConn might be the worst football team I've ever seen. And I was in school for a winless season at URI. They lost to Holy Cross already. That's 3-2, 1AA member Holy Cross who also lost to Merrimack by 2 touchdowns.

I was at the URI at UCONN game in 2018. Neither defense could stop a nosebleed. By halftime, it definitely looked like a last team with the ball wins type of game. I remember thinking that if the UCONN defense couldn’t stop Rhody, they were in for a long year. If I remember correctly, I don’t think they won a game that year.

Didn't it go to 2OT or right to the end of the 4th and we got stopped on the goal line?

Something tells me Kasim isn't getting stopped at the line this season...

I think UConn is now officially the worst team in D1 football.

If Rhody keeps this up, there should be a fan bus to Amherst....

Looks like we got down to the UConn 25 before we ran out of time at the end of the 4th

Honestly I think relegation is a silly concept in American sports even though soccer fans constantly say we should have it. That said, the UMass-UConn game was the perfect spot for a relegation matchup, with the loser being relegated to FCS

I will say... strictly from a schadenfreude perspective...the UConn football board is a good read.

Before this collapse I was definitely looking at making this trip, but now I'm just going to stay home. Too bad, because early forecast is sunny with a high in the low 50's, which is a great fall day for football. I'll watch this one on NESN instead of committing the approximately 7 hours required of actually going

Ah, gotcha. I thought it was like ESPN+. I am outside of New England so I don't get any NESN... With that said I do see it listed on FLO's schedule.

One fact that one may assume about today’s game. The rams are 5 and 0 when there is no rain and 0 and 3 with rain. Looks like a sunny day in Amherst! Turn this season around!!

That’s a good point. Some teams play better the better the weather is and some don’t. I do remember some big Rhody wins coming in inclement weather in the past. This team has not played well when the weather is adverse. I think if they get the W today and one other game this season (don’t care which one) and as long as the third game is a highly contested loss than they get in the playoffs. UMass is what it is, but it’s still a FBS program and a win over a FBS program does get them noticed.

Well they just gifted UMass a touchdown with a roughing the passer, gave up a 3rd and 18 and then back to back pass interference penalties.

That's the Rhody we know!

Still like our chances

Half time

URI 21, UMass 16

Rhody leading, but UMass ended the half looking pretty confident, both on that penalty-aided last touchdown drive and also on the subsequent on-side kick.

Nice drive capped off with a great play call on 3rd and goal where Hill could have either hit an open receiver or walked into the endzone. He went with the rushing option, putting URI up 28-16 as the end of the 3rd quarter approaches.

Huge 70+ yard run by freshman Jaylen Smith out of Shea on a 3rd and 17 to really put the game away barring Umass doing something extraordinary.

Final score:

URI 35, UMass 22

I know that there were a lot of penalties in the game today, but I have to say that I enjoyed this game on television today much more than the game I watched last week sitting in the rain.

Baron got fired after the UMASS game which was the last game of the season. UMASS finished 8th and went to the semifinals losing to St Bonaventure

His team finished 7-27 and in 13th place in the A10. Fordham finished 14th.

Back then the A10 did not allow the bottom 2 teams to participate in the A10 Tournament so our season was over with the final conference game as was Fordham’s.

Baron had two years remaining on his contract. Thorr then hired Hurley.

UMass follows the lead of Uconn. The Huskies got rid of head Coach Randy Edsall within days of its loss to local FCS team Holy Cross. Umass cans Walt Bell within 24 hours of its loss to local FCS team Rhode Island.

The lack of success and problems in the football programs at these schools is most certainly not all on the coaches. There are a myriad of issues which will prevent sustained FBS success at these schools. The administrations in Storrs and Amherst are chasing fool's gold. You can only deny reality for so long.

Baron wasn't just fired for going 7-23, the entire program would have been in serious academic hot water if he had stayed another year.

He had completely lost control of the team.

Plus revenue was taking a deep dive.....

And still, it took a ton of money from boosters to pay him off. Over a mil I think.

I never indicated he was fired because of the 7-24 record.
Many of us knew the firing was coming with the last game of the season. Even with 2 years left on his contract it had to happen. Was an excellent decision by Thorr. And an excellent decision to hire Hurley.

CAA Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week
L.B. Mack III, Sr., LB, Rhode Island (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco)

Mack recorded six tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss (-26 yards) and 3.5 sacks as Rhode Island defeated UMass, 35-22, for its first win over a FBS opponent since 2000. The 3.5 sacks were the 2nd-most by a URI player in school history and helped the Rams hold UMass to 108 rushing yards. Mack became the 7th player in program history with at least three sacks in a game.

The alarming thing, if I'm a Umass fan, is that Rhody looked better at almost all the skill positions. And we fielded a lineup with our 3rd string RB and 2nd string TE. Usually when FCS plays an FBS program you immediately see a difference at skill positions and along the D/O lines. In this game our D line dominated them, Mack and Neal were in the backfield all day.

On top of that, depth is typically an issue with 1A vs 1AA. With the extra scholarships, you would expect UMass to have a deeper team.
