Bucks To Sign Jeff Dowtin Via Hardship Exception
January 7th 2022 at 1:22pm CST by Luke Adams
The Bucks intend to sign free agent guard Jeff Dowtin to a 10-day contract using a hardship exception, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). Dowtin will be Milwaukee’s third 10-day hardship addition, joining Luke Kornet and Langston Galloway.
Dowtin, 24, began the season on a two-way contract with the Warriors and appeared briefly in four games for the team. However, he was waived last weekend in order to open up a two-way slot for Quinndary Weatherspoon.
A G League regular since going undrafted out of Rhode Island in 2020, Dowtin was a member of the Lakeland Magic team that won the NBAGL’s bubble season in 2020/21 and also started 12 games for the Santa Cruz Warriors this season, averaging 17.7 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 5.1 APG in 35.3 minutes per contest.
The Bucks currently have four players – Grayson Allen, Pat Connaughton, George Hill, and Jrue Holiday – in the health and safety protocols, which is why they qualify for another hardship exception. As a result, Dowtin’s 10-day salary ($53,176) won’t count against team salary for cap or tax purposes.

Bucks play the nets tonight @7:30 and Milwaukee has 4 of its rotational guards out on Covid protocol. Not sure if Jeff could be ready to suit up by tonight but it would be a huge opportunity.

If it's at all possible for him to be there and ready, he will be

Sounds like they need someone asap, maybe that was part of him getting the call...that he'd be available

I saw that. Last I looked it was about 77-38 at halftime. And of course Golden State was has prior team to the Bucks.

On 13-18 FG!!
Plus 8 rebounds
4 Assists

And maybe least surprising for this guy zero turnovers

Performances like Jeff has had in Summer NBA and G-League are building a case for him landing a permanent spot on somebody’s roster - hopefully

Umm.. Celtics could use a true point guard.. just saying. He has to be better than some of the flotsam and jetsam sitting on some NBA benches.. if anyone deserves a chance it's him.

Agree I’m kind of surprised he can’t land a permanent spot on a roster considering the way he’s playing hopefully it’s coming soon

I kind of wonder what the "conversion" rate is, for G-League stats to the NBA. Been a couple years since I read anything on it, but in the past, the G-League generally rated lower than the better European leagues and China, but it seems like teams are a bit more willing to roster OK players there now. The G-League website does have a list of all-time call-ups, and I'm not sure who the best player on that list is.

Lakeland lost by a point to Wisconsin. Jeff played 38 minutes, 24 points, 10 assists, 3 steals and only 1 turnover

Jeff hit the go-ahead shot (wish it was the game-winner) with 1.7 seconds left, but Wisconsin hit a three at the buzzer to win it.

I don’t watch the NBA so maybe I just don’t understand how they determine which players they keep on rosters. How can Jeff not stick with a team but Yuta Watanabe seems to have no problem warming the bench in the NBA?

Looks like Jeff is kinda looked at as a AAAA player- successful in the G League but not viewed as someone that teams want to devote a roster spot to. I don't necessarily agree...
If there is ever a chance, this would be the year with the high roster turnover due to covid.

Jeff could get called up to the Magic. He was with Orlando in summer league. Now back with Orlando so they know what he can do.

Orlando Magic at 8-39 W/L is the worst record in the NBA. Next worst team has 14 wins. Nothing to lose to give Jeff a shot.

Agree, ramster. I could see him catching on with a team like Orlando... he didn't seem to have much of a shot with GSW or MIL for obvious reasons.

Jeff is a 24-year-old guard. Unfortunately, many teams will want the 19-20-year-old kids who they think may have more potential. A good friend of mine played at a Big10 school and was the Gleague MVP. He would put up monster numbers and still could barely get on an NBA roster. He ended up making a lot of money playing all around the world... Xavier Munford is another example.

I don't like Jeff's chances of getting minutes for the Magic. They have Suggs, Cole Anthony, T Ross, Gary Harris, RJ Hampton, and Fultz will be back at some point. There are reports that Harris and Ross are on the block, so I think Jeff could find some minutes if Magic traded them.

I would love to see Jeff in the NBA, but I think he can make some good money overseas.

Age is the problem. Teams want guys who have room to grow rather than what they perceive as finished products. Same thing plagued Bryce Cotton, who decided he’d be better off overseas. He got a quick look in the NBA and did very well in his opportunity, but didn’t stick. He’s been league MVP in Australia 3 years in a row I think and has made a ton of money. Dowtin could follow a similar path.

Age is not the issue. The NBA will take a guy regardless of age. Jasean Tate is 26 and joined the NBA in 2020 after playing in Belgium and Australia. Matt Thomas is with the Bulls...NBA debut at age 25.

It's simply a matter of a fit, a need, a chance, a coach, etc.

Tired of seeing depressing news? Check out Jeff's G League stats. 21.7 pts per game on 55.9% shooting. 6.3 assists per game vs. 1.4 turnovers. This man has earned a spot on an NBA roster!
