Week #9 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

Week #9 begins. URI started the previous week on the road with a tough loss to UMass, in which they gave away 20 TO's and then after a sleepwalking first half, the Rams came to life in the second half of game at Ryan to batter George Mason. Now URI goes on the road to match-up with a diminished Duquesne team and then hosts George Washington on Sunday to close out the week. Both teams have a NET ranking in the 200's, so a loss here will have big impact on team prospects.

In the AP poll, Wisconsin with a big loss at Michigan falls one place to #10 position. Given inactivity, Saint Louis falls a slot to the #25 position.

In the USA Today/Coaches poll, Wisconsin falls one spot to #10. Due to inactivity Saint Louis falls out of Top 25. In the others category, Saint Louis gets 66 votes, and Richmond gets nine votes.

Gonzaga remains the nation's #1 team in the both AP poll and the Coaches' poll with Baylor #2.

The cumulative record of URI's seven OOC opponents now stands at 54-40, 0.574 , little changed from last week.

Despite the past week's road loss to UMass, the key URI metrics through games of January 17 all improved over last week.

NET - 66, up 10.
BPI - 64, up 5.
Pomeroy - 62, up 6.
Sagarin - 74, up 2.

One game in the A-10 on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

St Joseph's at La Salle, 4 PM. On CBSSN. Line: LAS -1.5, O/U: 146.5.

There are no games involving URI OOC opponents.

For Tyrese watchers, St John's visits UConn, 2:30 PM. On Fox.

5 games have been postponed/canceled.

He should that was a bad loss. It made no sense that he kept Sanogo out after the way he was playing. That loss is on Hurley.

No, said he wanted to play small to counter
Actually see his post game remark
Hurley: “When they went small the last 10 minutes we couldn’t play Adama.”

Sometimes coaches out think themselves.

Again, if it works you're a hero, and if not well you know the answer to that.

If Dan for some reason doesn't make the NCAA tournament and win a game the natives are going to explode. Tough break with Bouknight and not really crazy about the rest of that group. They beat Butler and DePaul but those don't move the needle. Xavier looks to be postponed, making Creighton next. Lose that one and they find themselves in the middle of the Big East. Can't say this makes me sad!

USC was by far their best overall win and Marquette their best conference win to date.
The meat of their conference games still to play: Villanova, Xavier, Seton Hall, Creighton again, and of course PC twice.
Both UConn and Creighton currently without their top players: Zegarowski and Booknight

Assuming Bouknight leaves for the Lottery and the NBA does Tyrese become UConn's best player? I know Dan has another great class coming in but he has had more swing and misses than impact players at UConn. He still is relying on Polly, Whaley and Charlton from Kevin O. I would take Ish over Gaffney and Adams in a heart beat. I like Akok but his game is limited offensively and he is coming off injury. Springs will follow Brown and transfer. Jackson was not ready for prime time before his injury. The fan base hates Coles and will ruin this guy just like Gilbert.

If Tyrese is Uconn's best player not sure if that is putting banners on the walls. Not a knock on Tyrese I really wish he was still wearing Keaney Blue.

Lol every time people on here talk about Uconn it’s always the same story. “Besides that lottery pick they have in only lukewarm about their roster”. They have a solid group. Middle of the pack Big East team WITHOUT their all American. Injuries suck of course but provided he can be back within a few weeks they’ll be dancing

Fatts is gonna use his extra year to transfer and him, Tyrese, Adams, and Hurley will lead UConn to the Sweet 16.

Down 18 to the gators, with 14 to go...I take the vols right now to come back and win this one. Will be a perfect gator choke.

ETA: Vols get it down to 11 with the ball and then commit 3 TOs for 8 points in about 11 seconds...back to 19. Game.

Alright this is getting ridiculous and is not good for the A-10. St. Louis has still not played one A-10 game and tonight's game has been cancelled. They are, or were, who the hell knows now, the best team in this league by far. And here we are on January 20th and they still have not played a league game. Others have played 7 games. Any idea what is going on and when they are expected to play again? I know it is Covid related but why is it taking them so long to get back on the court? It has to have been a month since they last played. And what t is the likelihood that these games are made up? Some sure but not all of them, do not see how that would be possible.

Oops, I tweaked the original quote and guess ended up quoting my comments by mistake. First sentence is from Obadiah, rest are my comments.

SLU's game Saturday is also off. My guess is they end up playing somewhere around 12 conference games.

I believe they are targeting a return next week. I can’t remember if they play Tuesday or Wednesday.
They last played on December 23. The virus ran rampant throughout the team and staff, at different times, which explains the longer pause. Travis Ford said he was hit hard by it.

That’s just awful what happened to SLU must be tough for them and their fans not having played in a month especially since they are ranked 25th let’s hope they can return

We’re not the only ones blowing a first half lead. 45-14 2nd half score for SBU.

I really like these Games of Interest threads. I hope we don’t lose it after last night’s giveaway. I realize it’s a lot of work to do this, though, and I appreciate it.
