Very impressive. That's what you are suppose to do when you are the superior team. Mason played a zone in the first half and Rhody went inside out. Tahane and Foppossi drew doubles and found the open shooters. Vargas and Cairns were on fire. Game Sunday was switched, not playing GW at home instead going to Rose Hill to play Fordham. Last team to beat us!

Really enjoying what this team is doing. Coach bought in a transfer from West Virginia who enrolled for second semester. Giana Hernandez-Boulden, a guard with great size 6' and from a great H.S program-Trenton Catholic. Coach recruited her hard out of H.S and didn't get her but she got her this time. If this team program keeps making progress I can see 1500 -2000 nightly at the Ryan Center post covid.

Fordham's Anna DeWolfe is from our town in Maine. Think she scored 27 at the game in Kingston and was the leading scorer yesterday. As a sophomore she is playing 40 minutes a game and I believe is the leading scorer in the A10. She lead our team (Greely) to two straight state championships. A true team player with zero ego. Wished she'd gone to URI!

DeWolfe had a game high 18 yesterday in 38 minutes
She had 5 Turnovers which is very unlike her as URI played solid defense against her yet she still got her points without forging shooting efficiency.
They played a clip about how much she practices shooting before each game by herself with coaches. She is very dedicated.
Which she had gone to URI.

Another nice road win for the Lady Rams yesterday. This year was to have been the second year of a rebuild and they are solidly in the middle of the pack. Hopefully, they can finish strong and win a game or two in the A10 tournament. Not to look too far into the future, but next year 4 of 5 starters return plus the first two off the bench. I know women's basketball doesn't do it for a lot of people but Coach Reiss has them playing hard. They are fun to watch.

Congratulations to the women's team for clinching the first winning conference record since 1995-96!

Taking a look at the women's tournament, assuming all current games get played and no more get added to the schedule, every team will have played enough games to be ranked by winning percentage. As a matter of fact, if Duquesne plays at least one of their 3 remaining games that would be the case.

Rhode Island has no chance of passing Dayton or Fordham for the top two spots this year but can do no worse than 7th place. If you had told me we'd have a winning record and would be 3rd to 7th in the conference this season I would have taken it. The end of the season will be very important to see how those five spots shake out.

Friday at noon tied for 4th VCU is at 7th UMass. At 4 as a team tied for 4th we hose 6th Richmond. At 5 3rd St. Louis is at 9th Davidson.
Sunday at 1 we host VCU in a battle of the teams tied for 4th. Also at 1 6th Richmond is at 7th UMass.

If St. Louis wins their game Friday we can't pass them for third place and are locked in fourth to seventh.

Big win for URI over Richmond today at the Ryan Center

URI was down by 9 points at one point, tied going into the 4th quarter then outscored Richmond 23-9 in the 4th Q.

Tahane with yet another great game 16 points and 14 rebounds - continues to make her case for 1st team A10

Muzet playing better it seems ever game. 12 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists

Freshman Cairns 4-7 on 3FG - her shooting was huge in the 4th Q

URI was 10-18 on 3FGs while Richmond was 10-30
Minutes played:
Tahane - 39
Muzet - 38
Vargas - 36
Foppossi - 35
Cairns - 32 - off the bench
Hendley - 13
Brown - 6
Harvey-Carr - 2

URI goes to (10-4) in Conference Play. Richmond falls to (9-5) - so this was a big game for URI

Great 4th quarter. Team is connected and really plays for the Coach and each other. Cairns is such a weapon off the bench, great stroke and so confident. If Tammi can bring in a true lead guard who can defend and play with pace- look out! Tahane and Foppossi are really talented and just play hard! This program is trending up and is going to be fun to watch in the future.

I agree ramster Muzet is solid. Such a glue kid! She does so many things well. There are times she is the best player on the floor.

Thor should try to lock Tammi up and promote this program. It has been dead for so long.

Tammi was his hire. No outside noise. He not only needed to hire a competent coach but also one who could change the culture. She checked all the boxes and has met and exceeded all expectations; and she is only in year 2. That is not the first time that Thorr has cheered wildly as the team has left the floor. He seems to really enjoy their play.

Rambone,
for those who think you have to start all over and "woe is us" when you make a coaching change consider this is only Year 2:
  • URI is knocking on the Door of a first round bye with the #4 seed (depends on Sunday's game with VCU at Ryan Center)
  • Only Senior Marta Vargas returns as one of the Top 7 "Minutes Played" Players - and Marta only played 9 games last season before injury. All 6 others are new
  • Tahane averaging 10.4 rpg, 14.5 ppg is on target for 1st team A10. She has 9 double-doubles
  • Muzet (Grad Transfer Washington State) averaging 8.5 rpg, 9.1 ppg and getting stronger as the season goes on. 34% on 3FG
  • Foppossi averaging 4.5 rpg, 12.1 ppg
  • Cairns, a freshman, averaging 4.5 rpg, 12.1 ppg. 2nd most 3FG with 42-99 attempts hitting 42% and 92% FT!!!! Playing 28 mpg - should make all rookie team
  • Vargas (returning Senior) averaging 8.6 ppg, has taken 108 3FG for 30% leads team in 3FG attempts
Clear evidence that in today's college basketball world that you don't have to go through 3-4 years to "rebuild" with a coaching change. Just the opposite.
  • Only the 2nd time in A10 history that URI has won 10 or more games in a season. Last time was 13 wins in 1995-96.
  • This will be the first time since 1995-96 that URI has finished with a winning conference record. Will finish either (10-5) or (11-4) depending on Sunday's huge game with VCU

URI will finish in 4th place with a win, 5th with a loss. We'll finish alone in 5th with a Richmond loss against UMass. We'll finish tied with a Richmond win, but will have the tiebreaker over them because we won both of our games against them. Currently up 48-39 at the half. Senior Marta Vargas has 15, redshirt junior Emmanuelle Tahane has 14 and redshirt sophomore Marie-Paule Foppossi has 11

Fantastic 87-68 win today over VCU to earn 4th place in the A10 with (11-4) record

Tammi was awesome in the post game interview when asked questions by Stone Freeman

She said that the Pandemic brought the team closer together, actually saying the Pandemic had some advantages to their success.

I liked at the end of the interview she said it was "their" goal to win the A10 Championship - not ours but theirs (the players).

is there a strategy behind it??

A lot of teams narrow their rotation down to 6 players, or 7.
Tammi brings in freshman Cairns off the bench and she is a phenomenal shooter and she passes the ball well. She typically logs more minutes than the starting point guard.
Tammi does like to play her starters a lot of minutes. It’s what she chooses to do. I’ve always liked the shorter rotations. Who earns those 6-7 spots plays a lot.

All this in just her 2nd year as coach.

That shows how important the right coach is to a program.

It can happen in the men's game too. Maybe it won't take several years to be good again, once a new staff comes on board.

Anybody can pick up transfers nowadays, but getting the right ones is everything.

The "new normal" in college basketball makes it possible.

So So impressed with what is going on with this program. Tammi is so impressive and such an asset to our University. Copeland, Cerrato, Elliott and now Tammi are all exceptional leaders. I think Thor made good hires with women's softball and volleyball. Hopefully those programs can turn the corner. This program should be promoted to the fullest extent possible. 1500 to 2000 fans in the Ryan is not out of the question.

Rambone,
Tammi didn't get this roster based on the "new normal" - no transfer breaks if you will. The transfers sat out their year. She turned this team around after only 1 season. This is just her 2nd year. 4 of 5 starters are transfers. Cairns could easily be a starter playing 28 mpg.
The team has continued to improve all season long. Talented transfers and freshman.

Starting Line Up
  • Johanna Muzet was a Grad Transfer from Washington State - so eligible immediately
  • Marie-Paule Foppossi transferred from Syracuse and sat out
  • Emmanuelle Tahane transferred from Missoui and sat out
  • Yanni Hendley transferred form Virginia and sat out
  • Marta Vargas is from Portugal, a Senior, was injured 1/3rd through last season and sat out the rest of the year
Catherine Cairns is a freshman -

Bench
  • Catherine Cairns is a freshman. 5th on team in minutes played with 28 mpg. 43-102 on 3FG for 42%. 12-13 FT for 92%. She can shoot the lights out and passes very well. Very valuable addition to this team
  • Kassondra Brown is a sophomore. 12 mpg and 4th in the team in rebounding. Good percentage shooter inside. Important front line player.
