Tom Ehrhardt on College Football HOF ballot

Unread post by RhowdyRam02 »

Another year, another nomination for Tom Ehrhardt for the College Football Hall of Fame. He's one of 99 "divisional" candidates nominated:

In case you don't know about Tom, he was a 1985 First Team All-American who led the nation in passing during his final year at URI…Holds nearly every passing record in Rams history and led URI to consecutive 10-3 seasons and national top 10 finishes in 1984-85…1985 Yankee Conference Player of the Year. He's tied for 19th all time FCS in single game passing yards with 566 against UConn November 16th, 1985 (it was 3rd all time when he did it). His 1985 season is also 19th all time FCS for passing yards per game with 354.2, fourth all time when he did it. He's tied for 14th all time in career yards per game with 309.1, third all time when he did it. He truly is one of the best FCS quarterbacks of all time, especially when you consider what offenses were like in the mid-80's and earlier

Hopefully he will gain election. There are at least several guys from the 70s and 80s who ought to be in but are still on the ballot.

That offense Bob Griffin ran with Ehrhardt and Brian Forster was about 20 years ahead of its time. Why can't we get coaches like that?

Once we lost Ehrhardt the whole thing fell apart though. Griffin's remaining conference records were
0-7
1-6
3-5
1-7
2-6
3-5
0-8

It's amazing we haven't had a winning conference record since joining the CAA. Our last winning conference record year was 2001... at 6-3.

I think Darren Rizzi would have been a good head coach but he left for greener pastures

facilities, admin support was lacking.
The competition takes football seriously, URI never did.

Dumb question. We're much more of basketball school then?

Yes, which is the smart play. Better to go after division 1 basketball than FCS football. That calculus might be different if we were FBS

I think so, too. Makes sense given there are A10 schools with better bball programs than football programs, if they have football at all, like VCU, Dayton, URI, St. Louis, Davidson, etc.

FBS we would need football to draw much more revenue. Our current facilities probably wouldn't cut it.

FBS you need at least a 15,000 seat stadium. That's just one of the many things holding us back.
