Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
I know his shooting has been discussed before, but in reviewing his stats from last year he was just over 30% overall, and about the same for 3, but a dismal 42% FT. How can a SG be that bad?

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
He took 7 free throws last year. Over his 3 years, he's a 73% FT shooter.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
Well he plays 22 min a game and played in 25 games as a shooting guard. Looks a little weak to me considering none of his other stats are eye openers. I'm not really a stats guy, but I thought I would check his out, and they seemed unimpressive to me. What do you think his qualities are that the coaches are willing to offer a scholarship? One year fill in?

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
I like him!
Yes its a highlight video.
We know he can be incoonsistent based off his stats.
If you watch that film you can tell he can shoot.
Ultra quick release. Deep range. The defense was definitely concerned with his ability to shoot in every one of those clips. Looks like a good passer. Lot of crisp passes. We can always use more of that. A few times it showed him dishing it to the cutter. Looks like a smart offensive player. Doesn't look that slow so he could probably hold his own on defense while he's out there. Experienced. UNLV basically plays at an A-10 level in the mountain west.
I wouldn't mind him at all. I mean if BYU is recruiting him that bodes well. They have one of the best offensive teams in the nation and if they think he can keep up in their system then sign me up for some of that.
Only one year. Come in, bring experience. Make some threes and keep the defense honest. He could do some Four McGlynn stuff for us and that would be satisfactory especially if everyone is eligible.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
6’5” and can come off a high post pick with a quick release?
Secret sauce for Cox’s offense opens up both low posts and the entire baseline.
Yes please!
Swish!
If he can shoot from the entire perimeter like McGlynn then wowie zowie!
Go Rhody.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
I would put Antonio 3rd behind Perez and Salnave. Just based purely off stats. I haven't seen any play so this is the lukest of luke warm takes.

We will probably get one or the other. I think Cox is setting up a first to commit scenario to pressure
them into making a decision.

Anthony Nelson is a priority as well is Perez and Antonio. We will hit on one of them.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
Agree. It is a huge dropout from Perez and Salnave to Antonio in my mind. It feels like the first are starters and Antonio just takes away minutes from Leggett and Berry without much impact.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
That could explain a lot of his percentage problems. I know the video shows him banging a lot of threes, but the stats tell a different story.
A broken hand is obviously a game changer. You said last year, so I'm assuming this past season.

Not a huge fan. He is a "if the rule does not pass" kind of addition for me. Nelson is a player. Prefer him.

I love the first line in that video. ‘159 out of his 177 shots this year are from behind the ark.’

Guy has been at a different school ever year. This is probably a guy we are going to get. Not too excited about him. Hoping for Betrand. I’m not sure we would end up with both these guys.

We can get both. Betrand will have to set and Cox will play them together if the rule passes.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
I think we get both of them.
The guess here is: Antonio eligible immediately, a Four McGlynn type player.
Betrand eligible next year, along with our other transfers. These two probably won't even see action at the same time in a Rhody uniform.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
I think the immediate transfer rule still goes thru for this upcoming year. A part of me hopes it doesn’t as we could preserve 3 years for the Twins and 2 years for Martin. It would also be nice to have Tyrese and Toppin have to sit next year.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
I like adding an experienced guy to the team. He can shoot and at least in his highlights he is making quick decisions. We sure could have used him last year. Its also great that he is eligible for next season for sure. Availability is an important ability.

A piece but not a major one

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
I wish we could have seen a fully healthy team with Four off the bench. Might have made it to 3 NCAA. Jonah is a player you want with a solid 5-6 players, that is a fringe tourney team to put you over the top.rhodyfan3000 wrote: ↑4 years ago I think we get both of them.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
I think this is the one to grab. I agree he is a Four McGlynn type of player.
Four was great to get on the court and start dropping 3s. He could turn the game around.

This is the player that would have supercharged last year’s offense.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
He didn’t do much for an average UNLV team. I think he started about half the games. I guess as a one year filler until we get better players or Martin and the twins are eligible, but no where near Bertrand Perez or Salnave.

Re: '16 Australian SG - Jonah Antonio (UNLV Grad Transfer)
Dude he broke his thumb 5 games into the season. Try breaking your thumb in the middle of the year and playing at a very consistent high level in d1. His shots almost entirely were from 3. And he still finished over 30%. Look at the games right after he returned from injury. He struggled a little due to rust and impact of the injury from 3. Going 1-5, 1-6, 2-8, 3-8, 2-9, 1-8. Then he started to catch his groove back and went the next few games 5-12, 5-10 and 4 for 13. Prior to the injury he was 10 for 28 from 3 for 36%. Give the guy a break we understand you said it ten times you like those other three better. Guess what those other three have to sit out next year. Just because he didnt play up to your standards last year doesnt mean he cant fit in well and become a good piece for uri next year. What happened last year doesnt mean it is going to happen next year. Everyone always says we need a shooter. Well we get one and people complain or bash him. Is there positive attitudes at all in some of you posters?

Oh noes! Not a broken thumb! aiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Do you think BYU and Depaul know? Should we tell them?
How long do you think it takes a broken thumb to heal? 25 years? Do you think he'll be able to thumb wrestle his grand kids one day?

LeBron James better never injure his middle finger on his shooting hand. Heaven forbid, they'll kick him out of the league.
