Week #16 - Games of Interest

In the AP poll, Dayton moves up to #5, Maryland moves up to #7, West Virginia drops o #17, and LSU drops out of
top 25. In the others category, LSU gets 55 votes just ahead of URI which gets 39 votes down from the 57 they got in previous poll. Richmond gets 3 votes.

In the USA Today/Coaches poll, Dayton moves to #5 position, Maryland moves up to #7, and West Virginia falls to #18. LSU gets 18 votes and Rhode Island gets 9 votes in the others category.

Baylor remains the #1 team in the AP poll and the Coaches' poll.

The cumulative record of URI OOC opponents is 179-123, 0.593, stable over the previous week.

With the road loss at Dayton and the win at Ryan over Saint Joseph's, the key URI metrics turned mostly down with one exception being the NET which is the metric that counts most for NCAAT selection. Most puzzling and raising questions about its credibility is ESPN's BPI. In that metric, Richmond, VCU, and Davidson are much higher rated than URI!!

NET - 32, up 4
BPI - 57, down 11
Pomeroy - 43, down 1
Sagarin - 48, down 8

On Monday, there are no games in the A-10 or among URI OOC opponents .

Worse than that is SJU missing front end of 1-and-1 with 20 seconds left and a 1 point lead. Xavier scored last 8 points.

I know it’s to cover his injury, but I can’t focus on anything in this game but Cole Anthony’s headband.

UNC already choked down their own poison pill...never felt like they had this game. Just that kind o' season for them...

Some interesting games on tap in the A-10 on Tuesday:

Davidson at St. Joseph's, 6:30 PM. On CBSSN. The Hawks gave Davidson all they could handle in their game at Belk. Will the Hawks break their winless A-10 streak? Will Ryan Daly suit up? Will Davidson continue their torrid three point shooting of three of their last four games.

Saint Louis at UMass, 7 PM. On ESPN+. UMass has shown improved play recently as Tre Mitchell has become more of a factor. This is the first of two trips to New England for Saint Louis which harbors post season aspirations and the outcomes of both road games will play a large role in determining how far the Bilikens go.

Dayton at VCU, 8:30 PM. On CBSSN. VCU is experiencing desperate times as a setting for this battle of conference elites. VCU can ill afford to show the scoring drought shown in their first game with Dayton or the one they showed at Ryan against Rhody. Another VCU loss spells CBI.

In games involving URI OOC opponents :

St. Francis (BKN) at Long Island U., 5 PM. On ESPNU.

Oklahoma State at #17 West Virginia, 7 PM. On ESPN2.

Northwestern at #7 Maryland, 8 PM. On BTN.

#10 Kentucky at LSU, 9 PM. On ESPN.

Yeah I think VCU is finished, and them losing to Dayton is not going to hurt their metrics in a way that would jeopardize our Q1 win. Want the Dayton train to keep rolling to give us a shot at a season-making win in a couple weeks.

Dayton is gonna be a Q1 win regardless of where they’re ranked, give me a VCU win tonight to solidify their status as a Q1 win for us.

Not sure if they can get back up there even with a win against Dayton.

If they could that’d be awesome but I think that ship has sailed.

Go Dayton. Give us a crack at a top 5 team in the Ryan center.

VCU would have to turn it around big time to actually beat Dayton.

I would rather have VCU win tonight making Rhody's already in the books two wins against them more valuable and then URI beat a highly ranked Dayton at home in two weeks. I don't think it will much matter if the Flyers are top 5, top 10, or even top 15 when they visit. A win over them will have about the same weight.

Every VCU loss hurts us, no idea why we want them to lose (again).

Yea having a Top 5 Dayton team into Kingston would be cool, but when it really matters, the AP Poll means nothing.

Dayton will be a Top 10/12 team regardless, let’s have our VCU sweep look better than it does right now.

Agreed, VCU needs to win. We would still get a top 10 dayton in Kingston.

I guess a case could be made for either side-Dayton will probably the run the table until they come to Kingston or the two wins over VCU that we all got so excited about don’t become useless. Granted it is against Dayton, but it is at home and it seems like VCU could continue to lose if they let this opportunity slip also. Tough to see VCU winning.

Whomever you side won't change the outcome. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the game while we bide our time to Davidson. That's the game that matters.

My preference is VCU wins tonight.

The biggest hole in our resume is we don’t have any wins against a team in the field (maybe North Texas). The easy fix is beat Dayton. But, if we lose to Dayton, we need our VCU wins to look as good as possible. Preferably, seen as 2 wins over a team in the field. A VCU win tonight and at St. Louis on Friday and VCU will be back in the projected field.

And, if we beat Dayton, and Dayton loses tonight, we could be tied with them, including a split head to head. (Not sure what the next tie-breaker is)

Great debate topic for a bye week though.

If VCU goes on a tear (I don’t see that happening due to offensive weaknesses) and Richmond wins out to finish 2nd, is anyone worried about what that does to Rhody’s bid chances?

I want Rhody to unquestionably be the second A10 team inline for a bid. So I am not a big fan of VCU and Richmond winning out.

It is best for URI and the A-10 if its top teams continue to do well. A rising tide lifts all boats. More NCAA teams means more money & PR exposure for the league. Teams in the field and even just outside on the bubble raise the value of all games versus these opponents for others.

Make no mistake, the recent misfortune of VCU was not good for Rhody. URI's best asset was its sweep of two games over them. They are not now worth as much.

VCU has 5 losses. If they catch us it means Rhody loses 3 out of the next 5 which will knock us out. We don’t need to really worry about VCU nearly as much as Richmond.

Davidson already up 9-2. Good ball movement and passing plus not so great D leading to open 3 point looks. 3 for 4 early

Dayton has to lose to someone else for that to happen. Go v-koo.

Another incredible start to a Davidson game with a trey downpour. Four out of last five games have seen this pattern both at Belk and on the road.

i see VCU in the 30-75 NET range win or lose against Dayton so our Q1 and Q2 wins against them aren't going to change. give me as high a ranked team as possible visiting the Ryan Center. Go Flyers.

In January we shot 44/40/75. Davidson 37/17/73. FT +7. Points off TOs +6. Won 69-58. Key was limiting their 3s to 4-23. Fatts had 26 with no other double digit scorers although 3 had 9 each. Davidson was 19-40 from 2. So it looks like the defensive strategy was to stop the 3 and make them take 2s.

Davidson is taking uncontested 3 pt shots. Make a big difference when you have defense in your grill.

Re: Week #16 - Games of Interest

Amazingly familiar pattern to Davidson's offense keyed on 3-point shooting in recent games:

vs. Fordham - 30 point win, Davidson grabbed a 20 point lead in first 9 minutes
vs. UMass - 35 point win, Davidson grabbed a 20 point lead in first 15 minutes.
vs. St. Bona - 29 point win, Davidson grabbed a 20 point lead in first 18 minutes.
vs. St. Joe"s - TBD, Davidson grabbed a 20 point lead in first 14 minutes.

Davidson hits their threes and the opposing team gets rattled and starts to try to catch by jacking up threes in response and they miss. St. Joe's 3-point shooting in first half, 0-7.

Only silver lining is midst of those games was the Wildcats game at VCU where they were 5-19 on treys (26%), FG 39%, and 21 turnovers = a 11 point loss.

The Rams game is at Belk and the Wildcats will be sky high, but if URI plays its game it can win even if Davidson has success in shooting. Vanderbilt did just that in beating them.

TP nailed it in Nov. Davidson mediocrity through the non-con and half the conf sched...and then basically a nuisance for the latter half of conference play.

Saint Louis leads UMass 34-28 at the half on some great shooting all around. Tre Mitchell has a turnover and 2 points. The Rams made him look like an All-American in the Ryan game.

Hawks cut the lead to 10. Davidson playing some lackluster defense during a St. Joe’s run.
