Rhody the Ram Number

Unread post by OhioRam32 »

This is probably a ridiculous question and I full expect to get made fun of...however, a family discussion has led me to ask this question: Is there any significance to Rhody's number being 42? I didn't want to ask but got pressured into doing so, figured someone might know!

42 is a significant number at Syracuse for football reasons.

I believe it’s number 44. Their elite running backs of the 50s and 60s wore it.

I don’t think it’s a ridiculous question. I’ve been wondering myself. I remember trying to get information about it on line. There was quite a bit regarding the mascot origin but nothing regarding number 42, so it’s still a mystery to me.

I think it started with Ernie Davis. You’re right; it’s 44. My daughter graduated nearly 20 years ago so my memory is getting fuzzy.

From experience it's whatever jersey they can find that fits. At least that's how it was back in the day. Would assume not too much changed!

I don't think it's really a big deal for it to match up that closely, but 23 would be far more appropriate than 92 if you want to make a big deal out of the mascot number. We adopted the ram mascot in 1923
