Some interesting comments here.

Yes they want to save their charter flights for when classes are in session.

Re: Charter flights?
With or without a charter flight last night the weather wouldn’t help either situation.

Re: Charter flights?
Just a little more clarity here:
I book my own travel, whether it's for URI or the Red Sox. The only media that goes with the team on a charter are the broadcast partners. Richmond to Providence commercial requires a connection, and in this case it was Charlotte.
The flight to Charlotte was delayed, which put the connection in jeopardy. The initial approach in Charlotte was made into the teeth of a storm and aborted. The plane regained altitude, held for 10-15 minutes and landed relatively smoothly.
The flight from Charlotte to Providence wound up being delayed, enabling the connection. It was a lucky break. There was a real chance of spending the night in Richmond or Charlotte and flying home Sunday morning.
A direct flight from Richmond to Providence via charter would have landed here no later than 10 pm. There would have been some wind on the landing, but nothing out of the ordinary.
I'll be writing about this more in depth for Thursday's Journal.

Few things are more terrifying than flying in turbulent weather. Glad everybody got back safely!
