URI is back on US soil and looking to get back to their winning ways as they take on the Manhattan Jaspers at home in a late afternoon game the day before Thanksgiving. With students heading home for the holiday, expect a low attendance at this one. Even with the low attendance, URI should take home the “W”. Height won’t be an issue like it was against LSU as most of the high scorers for the Jaspars are guards. Fun fact, the last time these two teams faced off 14 years ago Rhody’s starting lineup featured 4 forwards & a center. I think this year’s team will be too quick & athletic for the Jaspers to contain. Speaking of too quick, Manhattan coach Steve Masiello was a walk on for Kentucky during the late 90s when old friend Rick “15 Seconds” Pitino was the coach.

7.3 rebounds a game for a guard is pretty impressive.

If Jeff can slow him down, should be a fairly easy win....although not a lot of time to get ready for this one.

Need a solid game result to feel good at the kids table this Thursday.

Grab your entire family and get to the Ryan Center. Biggest concern for this game is that it could be played with a high school game type crowd. Uggh

But a lot bigger crowd than the teams played in front of in Jamaica for two games

True but a high school game crowd in a high school game gym isn't as much of an energy suck as 1,000 people in an 8,000 person venue.

When GoRhody LSU postgame came out it had URI - Manhattan Game at 7pm, even late last night it was that way. Now says 4:00pm correctly.

Would be a disaster if people showed up for a 7pm game and the parking lot was clearing out from the 4pm.

Even if the 4pm was always correct, fans could still make the false assumption that the game is at its traditional 7pm time slot.

What's Next
Rhode Island returns home in time to host Manhattan Wednesday, Nov. 27. Game time is 4 p.m.

I was thinking maybe it’s so Manhattan can get back to campus at a reasonable time. Just a guess on my part, though. Still, good luck with that Rte 95 traffic getting back.

Did we buy this game?? Given the opponent,where it is in the schedule and the start time it seems odd that we would schedule this- especially last minute. Can’t be doing it for the gate...

I think it was done so that we could have closer to a full schedule, and the date/time was settled on due to the scheduling constraints of both teams.

I’m fascinated by the career of coach Steve Masiello. He almost capitalized on some mid-major success and had the chance to make a (slight) jump to South Florida. Then, there was the issue with him not graduating, and now he seems kind of stuck at Manhattan with limited recent success.

Manhattan is not a pushover. We mail it in, and it will be a nailbiter.

Anything less than our B game isn't enough, unless we're playing someone like RIC.

We aren't good enough to screw around and win.

.......if I recall correctly, it was an embellished resume that him as a graduate, then agreed it was a “my bad” and he corrected that by going back to get the credits/degree.....

I think they handle Manhattan easily. I doubt they trail at all in the second half. I like a game like this for Cox to highlight some specific things, maybe expand the rotation or focus on getting Martin going. There’s some margin for error here to test some things out and respond accordingly.

This is very on brand for you but I’m curious, have you seen Manhattan play this year? What basis do you have for saying they aren’t a pushover? On any given day anyone can beat anyone but this is basically your take for every game we play against a potentially inferior opponent so just wondering if you have any basis for it or just the normal doom and gloom.

I'm not dooming and glooming at all.

Just take care of business...the old "one game at a time" mantra.

Just because I don't subscribe to the excuse train doesn't mean I think they will lose.

This time slot has been questioned a lot, not only in this thread but in others. Looking at the schedule for Wednesday, November 27, there are a number of games scheduled throughout the day. Some are on campuses, some in Remote Tournament Locations.

I just called the box office regarding this tweet. If you know a student, they can bring anyone (up to 2 people) for this game. It does not have to be a fellow college student, it can be anyone. So time to make friends with a student.

Unfortunately, the students will be home for Thanksgiving break. I suppose a few of the locals will show up, but I'd be surprised to see more than 100 students at the game.

I work at this PITA restaurant a few nights a week and of course I get scheduled for tomorrow night AND have to work a ten hour day for them on Thanksgiving. Mind you it isn't even my "job".

Nice way to give a cupcake a chance. If I was coach I have no clue how to spin this one for my team. Can only hope a lot of freebies are being handed out at local schools and season ticket holders are making a real effort to give their seats away.

If URI loses to Manhattan because of the size of the crowd then this is a lost season.

URI just played in front of 100 or fewer URI fans
URI should win easily against Manhattan with zero URI fans in attendance

Agree if we lose this game regardless of crowd it’s ugly

I haven't missed a home game in quite some time. I know, I realize I have been very fortunate, but it's going to be tough to cope with telling people about a Pork Modo Mio special all while Rhody is playing 10 minutes down the road.

I’d argue that they would play better in an empty gym.

They’re not going to lose to Manhattan, and if they somehow do it will have nothing to do with the crowd. That’s not an excuse.

There likely were not many choices for a date the two schools had open and could agree upon. Keep in mind this was a late add to the schedule that was needed after a Jamaica Classic game fell through. Last game to be pinned down and it was done so very late in the process when there were very few options.

Many schools are playing games beginning as early as noon on Wednesday, some at 2pm, some at 3pm, others at 4pm. It’s not only URI.
Even if played at 7pm it’s likely the attendance would be 4000 or less.

Then they did.

We’re no way shape or form good enough to think we’ll win just by showing up.

My freshman year ('07 Baron era) you could get up to four tickets. I can't remember if you needed to show 4 IDs at first or if they changed it later in the season. We had something like 15 of us all line up and go and we were just handing off IDs to one another. Ended up with a ridiculous amount of tickets and handed them out all over Frat Circle.

Needless to say, the policy changed once we got rid of Baron. Probably around the time people actually wanted to go to games again.
