Week #2- Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

In the AP Poll, no A-10 teams are ranked in Top 25 as VCU falls out given their unimpressive home win over North Texas. LSU takes down the #23 position. Kentucky takes over as #1. VCU with 137 votes is the largest vote getter in the "others" category, PC gets 23 votes, Dayton one.

Given the very early state of the college basketball landscape, the various ranking systems are all suspect, but for what's it's worth, here is a look at how URI stacks up.

URI ratings:
NET - NA
BPI - 68
Pomeroy - 87
Sagarin - 205

No Monday action in A-10.

The only game of relevance tonight - in a tune-up prior to its Friday game at URI, Alabama hosts Florida Atlantic, 8 PM. On SECN+.

Alabama beat Florida Atlantic, 78-59. The game was only close for the first five minutes when Alabama began the move to build a double digit lead which it expanded to game's end. Alabama was hampered in game by 16 TO's and 15 FAU steals. The Tide was 9-29, 32% on treys. They had a decided edge on the glass (45-32) and outscored FAU by 11 on the FT line.

Florida Atlantic finished near the bottom of Conference USA last season and is forecast to finish in like manner this season. Interestingly URI will face three C-USA teams this year, the favorite Western Kentucky, a greatly improved Middle Tennessee team, and North Texas which gave VCU all it could handle last week.

Game of interest last Friday was LIU vs UMASS- Lowell
Raiquan Clark scores 21 points in 24 minutes for LIU. He is viewed as Preseason POY in His conference but was suspended 1 game vs URI. A good thing since our game was closer than should have
Christian Letete his 51 points for UMASS - Lowell. 7-13 on 3Ps. Only 3 players all last season hit over 50 pts

Vs Ohio State Sunday, Letete hit for only 9 pts and 9 rebounds

2 games of interest tonight

Northeastern @ UMASS. Jordan Roland leads the Nation in scoring at 40.5 ppg. How does UMASS try to slow Roland down?

#13 Memphis @ #14 Oregon
Memphis starts 5 Freshmen including, of course, James Wiseman.

PC hero in Cooleys lone NCAA win over USC, Drew Edwards, is tonight leading Charlotte to a 39-22 halftime lead over a Davidson team that has started the year off with difficulty.

Davidson rallies a bit in second half, but still falls to Charlotte, 71-58. bad loss for the Wildcats and the A-10.

Duquesne beats Lamar of Texas, 66-56. Game was the first of four to be played at nearby LaRoche College while the Duke's arena is undergoing a major renovation.

UMass takes a nice home win over Northeastern. 80 -71, the Huskies had previously won games over BU and Harvard.

Amazing Evansville goes into hallowed Rupp Arena in Lexington and takes down #1 Kentucky. 67-64. Evansville finished last in the MVC last season and they were forecasted not to be much better this season.

Right. Davidson was favored over Charlotte by 10 points. Davidson was in some preseason poll Top 25s. Bad loss for A10.

Davidson pulls the same shit every year OOC and I, for one, am tired of them sandbagging the league before the conference schedule starts and then magically putting it together in the league. Get it together, Dave.

Yeah then when we lose to them in conference it helps to kill our NCAA chances.

They don't miss many 3's when they play us.

VCU-LSU should be a good one. Still can’t stand Wade.

Here is tonight's A-10 schedule with the highlight being the aforementioned VCU-LSU tilt. The GMU game will provide an interesting comparative and we will also get a feel for how Hurley's second year UConn team looks.

#23 LSU at VCU, 6 PM. On ESPN2.

Saint Joseph's at UConn, 7 PM. On CBSSN. Game is a campus game in the Charleston Classic.

Fairleigh Dickinson at Fordham, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

Long Island U. at George Mason, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

La Salle at Penn, 7 PM. A Big Five game. On ESPN+.

Eastern Washington at Saint Louis, 8 PM. On ESPN+.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

Quinnipiac at Brown, 7 PM. On ESPN+

Mars Hill at Middle Tennessee, 7:30 PM.

Paul Quinn at Nicholls, 8 PM.

PC at Northwestern, 9 PM. On BTN.

The Quinnipiac at Brown, 7 PM game is interesting as Quinnipiac team is playing only it’s opening game and they have 3 players that URI recruited in the past in their starting line up. Quinnipiac is preseason picked to finish 3rd behind Iona and Rider.
Aaron Falzone okayed 4 years at Northwestern now a grad year
Kevin Marfo
Matt Balanc from DC area. Redshirted last season.

The math is simple enough since we play LSU once and we play VCU twice and they also play most of the other teams on our schedule. But that aside, I will always root for an A10 team against another conference, especially a P5 team - both for league perception and out of principle.

For sure, always want the A10 to win non-conference games, and even more so against P5 teams. Then beat the crap out of VCU a couple times.

This is so true. Now they will go 15-3 in conference and people will think they are world beaters after losing 5 games out of conference

VCU did everything they could to give the game away on the defensive glass down the stretch. LSU going to be kicking themselves that they blew that many opportunities.
