Because much of the schools are a relatively short drive. So he can pop in and out as much as he wants, theoretically.

Hard for me to look at ‘21s when we haven’t had OVs from 20s yet.

Holland is playing it smart though. Taking unofficial visits early to see where he might find the best fit.
Smart kid knowing he is visiting Princeton, University of Pennsylvania and Lehigh.
Good move by Cox rolling out the welcome carpet.

A recruit can take 5 Official Visits his Jr year AND 5 more his Sr year. That is a lot of Official Visits that he can take.

I wouldn’t say it makes him smarter than others. His family can afford this trip. Other families can’t. On an unofficial the school can’t even pay for a meal. So his family is paying for transportation, lodging and food.

Right. Exactly. So he is saving (or the family is saving) the big money for later on. It's not so expensive to take the train to Philly or to Kingston and Providence. They might have a bunch of Amtrak points saved up. Key is he is early, on top of the process, trying to see what his best fit for college might be. Does not necessarily mean he or his family is rich. These are relatively easy to get to Northeast schools.
If he can get the attention of schools like Penn, Princeton and Lehigh then I would bet that other Ivy League schools will be watching and could follow also with scholarships.
The value of an Ivy League Degree is huge in relation to the travel costs incurred now.

No one said they had to be rich. I round trip ticket from Philly to Kingston is $176 - 3 people is $528. Reasonable hotel is $175 (with tax etc that has 3 people in 1 room). Figure meals at $40 per person per day. So a two day trip (one overnight) is $943. Combing URI & PC would add $102 for the train, another night hotel and day of food. That would bring the two school trip to $1,340. Something a lot of recruits’ families can’t afford.

I am sure a lot of these families travel Amtrak frequently and have a bunch of Amtrak points 😜

Get the Amtrak Credit Card and get 40,000 points sign up
It is still a low amount of money for the potential education benefits.
When the Official Visits take place Holland will be in a better position to decide on how to best leverage his visits.
I'd be willing to bet all the Ivy League Schools will be after him since he is showing interest, then the Stanford's, Duke's Northwestern's, Vanderbilt's start lining up for possible Official Visits.
I like his (and his family's) approach

If the family or a friend has a car the trip can be relatively inexpensive and there are hotels for as little as $99 - $ 115 plus tax such as Comfort Suites
that are comfortable and have nice facilities including indoor pools and such. So in this case the trip would only cost under $ 300 including gas and tolls.
Germantown Academy is a private school . He may be getting some tuition assistance , otherwise his family would have to be reasonably well off anyway
for him to be able to attend . don't know his family finances , but a middle class family with a car wouldn't have to break the budget to make the trips.
The son of Gary Melchionni , a former NBA guard in the 70s ( A former HS classmate of mine and a Duke star ) went to play for Duke after attending Germantown Academy. He was a walk on and paid his own way even though he became a starter eventually . Maybe this kid's family is as fortunate .

Booking Amtrak in advance and also looking for reduced fares can reduce the cost below $176 per person.
Amtrak also offers 2-1 ticketing at times and also if you have the right Amtrak Credit Card.
$40 per person per day seems high for meals - plus if they didn’t make the trip they would have to eat at home as well - just not out. They could always go to the grocery store in Wakefield or Providence and reduce meal costs.
Not all recruits families are poor - maybe his is and maybe his isn’t. But the fact that he is making the trip to PC and URI on the same excursion demonstrates some good planning skills.
The fact that he is using unofficial visits and saving his officials seems to indicate a frugality factor. I

He could be driving to some or all of these Schools and in the cases of Princeton, LaSalle, Penn, Lehigh and Penn State incurring no overnight Hotel Stays.

We also don’t know that it’s 3 people he is traveling with, could be more, could be only himself.

In looking at his planning, quality of schools selected to visit and the fact he is a Class of 2021 already doing this school evaluation legwork I’d say I’m impressed.

Princeton (Unofficial Visit: 8/6/2019) Done
LaSalle (Unofficial Visit: 8/13/2019) Done
Lehigh (Unofficial Visit: 8/20/2019) Done
Penn (Unofficial Visit: 8/22/2019) Done

Rhode Island (Unofficial Visit: 8/26/2019) Today
PC (Unofficial Visit: 8/27/2019) Tomorrow

Penn State (Unofficial Visit: 9/7/2019)

Looking at the Bottom Line - Following yesterdays unofficial visit to URI, Holland walked away with an Offer. Not a bad days work. The offer is something other schools will notice as well. Wonder what happens with his PC visit.

Looks like we are involved with a lot of good recruiting prospects, but out of all of them, I would place this kid in the top 3 for priority, I really hope they manage to land him.

I would be very surprised if we get his commitment, His recruitment has been very quiet lately, not sure what goes on behind the scenes with our staff. But, we have luck with Pa kids as of late, so who knows. I still prefer Andrew McConnell with the final spot, because having a pure point guard with his skills is a huge plus and maybe our best fit for the future. I think his recruitment will continue to blow up and Ga. isn't one of our hot spots.

Interesting...sounds like Rhodyram has inside info. This would close-out our '21 class with Abdou, Ileri and Ed. Staff would seem content with Jalen, Allen, Ish and Trey in the backcourt in 21-22.

We'll have 4 spots available in '22.

I hope they get him. This team is very well balanced (stacked) now, if there is a spot that might be a little light, it could be that SF spot.

They replaced T.Martin and Toppin with M.Martin and DJ with Ileri in development.

Great academic school and decided to stay home, makes sense. He must be an excellent student and made a smart decision, glad for him. We still have other irons in the fire and we should be fine.

From zagsblog......

Ed Holland, the 6-foot-6, 205-pound small forward from Philadelphia Friends’ Central and the Philly Pride AAU team, is headed to the Ivy League.
Holland committed to Penn on Thursday, choosing the Quakers over Rhode Island, he told ZAGSBLOG ahead of his public announcement.
“I will be going to the University of Pennsylvania,” he said.
He also considered Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn State, VCU and Providence.

Smart decision for the young man. Penn should set him up to be successful far beyond his college years.
