Who won the VCU/Dayton game?

Update: Dayton defeated VCU 1-0. URI will face Dayton in the final. We did not face the Flyers in league play.

Senior Niklas Middrup - Second Team Defender
Redshirt Junior Stefan Schmidt - Second Team Goalkeeper

We also placed three players on the 12 member all-academic team

Peder Kristiansen, an Engineering major
Niklas Middrup, undeclared
Stefan Schmidt, a Psychology major

Gareth is really running a top notch program here and all efforts need to be made to keep him on board as long as possible, just like his former coach Ed Bradley
Great that Elliot got COY. Well deserved.

Of the 5 Awards I don’t get 3rd place Dayton getting 3 of the 5 Awards. URI comes in 1st and only gets COY

I could see URI getting Goalie of Year, Midfielder of Year and/or Player of Year. But 3 Dayton players get recognized but no Rhody Players ????

Edvin Akselsen led the Nation in Assists. A great player who will draw plenty of attention from Dayton just as he drew plenty from Fordham Friday.

We benefited greatly from the Dayton 2-1 win at St Louis during the season. That, coupled with the Fordham Win at St Louis enabled URI to get 1st place. We lost to St Louis regular season so a tiebreaker would have gone to SLU.

Dayton and URI are both hot teams heading into today.

Dayton has won 8 straight including 4 by shut outs.

I’m hoping for a big performance by Akselsen this afternoon. He is very talented

Atlantic 10
What happened in 2018: On the back of a strong finish to the season, VCU secured the regular season title with a record of 6-1-1. It was a close race with Davidson just three points behind, Rhode Island and George Mason four points back, and three teams – Saint Louis, Dayton and Fordham with 13. Rhode Island put it all together in the conference tournament, and nearly knocked out UConn in the first round, losing 4-3 in overtime in the first round of the NCAAs.

What to expect in 2019: In a 13-team league that plays an unbalanced schedule, the regular season race can be influenced by how the conference slate is drawn up. That being said, there should be a lot of similar programs competing for honors a the top. Fordham lost head coach Jim McElderry, who moved to Rutgers. Replacing him is Carlo Acquista; that program’s evolution is going to be worth following. While VCU, Rhode Island and Davidson seem likely to contend, Saint Louis is on the rise, bolstered by a strong recruiting class and high-level returning players.

URI wins the A10 Conference AND the A10 Post Season Tournament! We were picked to finish 3rd by Coaches in Preseason.

Only fitting that Ervin Akselsen gets the Winning Goal in the (1-0) victory over Dayton in today’s Championship Game. The URI Sophomore has been great since entering the starting line up last season for the 6th match of the season vs PC.
Schmidt getting the shut out was awesome too.
Great team accomplishment!!!

Great Job Guys!

Question? Is it true Rhody can not host a NCAA tourney game because there is no press box at the URI soccer complex. I thought that was why they had to play at UConn last season... maybe I’m wrong. Also somebody posted last season why couldn’t the team play at Meade, and the answer was it was a night game verses UConn, and Meade did not have lights installed at that time. Well it does now and painting in the lines like they did for the A-10 championship on the Fordham football field doesn’t seem overly difficult.

Regardless looking forward to seeing who URI gets to play!

When you say not overly difficult, do you mean generally or for an operation that seemingly is incapable of operating a scoreboard properly?

R. Kelly raises interesting point, but as mentioned in past, wouldn' t the prudent thing to do is to build a press box on the already nice soccer field?
It can't be that much $$?
Use the $$ football gives soccer, charge for attendance, hit the soccer boosters up for the rest. That easy. Soccer boosters have plenty of $$.
Unless the impression I am getting is that soccer boosters could give up a rip?

True Point you’ve got me there I can’t guarantee they could figure out the dimensions nor if they could even make the lines straight etc...

I’m all for finishing up the Soccer complex with a press box. I just figured for now why not use Meade. Believe me in my opinion the athletic department should come up with the funds to build the press box (pause for laugh) but really the boosters can’t always be counted on for everything. Maybe if this time the department started the process the booster would help out. I’m guessing a press box for soccer doesn’t need to be some huge elaborate building. Just something with heat, plumbing and windows. Why can’t the department help out a team that has proven it can compete at a National level when most URI sports can not. They deserve it and if they are good enough to play a home game in the NCAA tournament the administration needs to pony up the cash to make it happen.

R. Kelly-i got no problem donating to a press box.
But,some questions:
1. Do you think people who do not donate to soccer should get into the games for free as is currently?
2. Of teams Rams play who meet NCAA home game requirements, how many charge for attendance?

I’d give money as well. I know the general policy for basketball and football is going after the large donations I just don’t see this happening for a soccer press box. The quickest way to get it done is using athletic funds to build one.

1. No due to the limited demand I would keep it a voluntary nominal donation toward the needs of the program. Say $5 bucks to get in. Maybe if you donate at a Certain level you get a season pass or something like that.

2. I did a quick check of PC, BC and UConn the only one out of the three that I definitely saw tickets for sale was UConn, and they only charge $8 for reserved seats.

Would be ticket sales and donations would most likely take a long long time to add up to a press box. But I’m just guessing and have no real info on the current alumni support for the program.

Really my point is the athletic department should right or wrong reward a program that is performing at a high level. It’s not that I don’t want to see all URI men’s and women’s sports be well funded, but at some point you need to reward results. The soccer team while doing well without a press box could benefit by having one (same goes for the women’s team) by being selected to play a home NCAA tournament game. Which I would sell tickets for! They have shown they can make the tourney at a semi regular basis (13 overall and six times since 2000). I’m guessing more than any other URI sport.

If we truly didn't host last year's match against UConn because of the lack of a press box then it doesn't appear we need anything too fancy to fulfill the requirement. Looking at Syracuse's facility it doesn't appear to be much better than ours and their press box doesn't exactly scream state of the art or luxurious. It seems we should be able to duplicate what they have at a fairly low cost.

RK-agree on the need for a press box.
Disagree on the method of funding.
A. By the athletic dept. -you mean the state via budget appropriation I hope? (has been same since 2007)
B. Athletic dept. is already giving soccer $$ from football revenue. Just giving (no loan,no strings,etc.). Not investing.
C. At far more (or less) successful sports than mens soccer HC's everywhere are adept at selling tickets and fund raising.
D. Program has been successful since 2000? 19 years? I am sorry, that's on the soccer HC's since then.

500 tickets X $8=$4000 a game. 10 games a year X 19=190 games X $4000=$760,000? Before donations.

You keep saying B and it's simply not true. Football isn't giving anyone money, they're losing approximately $500,000 a year.

Men's soccer used to be a ticketed event, I'm not sure when they stopped and why. Probably a good question to ask someone in the athletic department, but I'm not sure what that has to do with a press box. If they started charging people to go again it would just mean that men's soccer would start losing less money, it wouldn't create some surplus of funds that we would then be able to invest in a capital project.

No,the $$ from the Ohio FB buy game was divided up amongst all the teams (including soccer and mens hoop).
Just given. I don't have a problem with that.
Also, there plenty of alums in construction who would do the press box at cost or next to nothing.
I heard from a reliable source that a press box already exists at Rhody,it just needs to be modernized?
Can someone confirm?
Why would athletic dept. want media (ProJo,NY Daily news,ESPN) at a game with no paid attendance?

I’m all for selling tickets. It’s just that how many non-students get down to the games? They averaged 1,042 for the 8 games played at the URI pitch this season that had attendance figures. They played 9 games total, but the Merrimack game didn’t have a listed attendance figure. I’m guessing that game wasn’t a big draw. If half the 1,042 attendees are potential paying customers than charge them. I’ll I’m saying is why can’t the administrators/athletic department make it so the Men’s and women’s soccer teams have a complete field. Seems like all they need is a press box to make a a fully functional facility.
