2019 Women’s Softball Season

Unread post by ramster »

URI is off to a descent start going 2-3. They already had Faith Musselwhite garner A10 Freshman of the Week Honors. She hit 2 HRs in one game! Faith is 8-15 for .533
Another Freshman, Left Fielder Sami Villarreal is also 8-15 for .533
And still another Freshman, Shortstop Ari Castillo is the 3rd leading hitter on the team so far 6-16 for .375
Freshman Susan Harrison is the catcher
These 4 freshmen have started all 5 games
Freshman Leah Krivitsky has started the last 3 games at 2nd base

Coach Bridget Hurlman is excellent and I really hope this group can have one of the best seasons for URI in a long time. The pitching staff is good.

URI plays in Beaumont Texas starting Friday with games vs UTSA, Lamar, UTSA again and Lamar again plus Maine
Then they go to College of Charleston to play N.C. State, C of C, Youngstown St, Marist and Bryant
Following that they go to U of Maryland to play UMBC, U of Maryland, Drexel, Villanova and St Peters
Then finally home vs Brown on March 20

Like the 5 Freshmen in the starting line up to go with some good upperclassmen.

Good Luck to this team!

Becca Rogers threw a one-hitter today to help URI beat North Carolina State 1-0. NC State is a legit ACC team who has beat Arizona and South Florida this year and lost 2-1 to U of Florida. Great win!!!

Amazing in Rogers is that the 1 hit NC State got was withbthe lead off batter of the game. After that hit she basically pitched a no hitter
RF Faith Musselwhite and SS Ari Castillo both led off the 4th inning with back to back doubles to score the games only run. Musselwhite and Castillo are very impressive Freshmen.

Yeah, their top three hitters (by average) are freshman, with Sami Villarreal hitting .410. She is having a great weekend, as Rhody is now 3-1 on the weekend.

Rhody shuts out Bryant 3-0 to close out the Charleston Invitational 4-1. That moves them to 6-9 on the season. Last year, when they won their 6th game, their record was 6-19. Great improvement.

This team is a nice mix of young offensive players and experienced pitching. Becca Rogers had a 0.74 ERA this weekend and had 23 Ks in 19 innings. Her season ERA moved down 1.84. Offensively, Sami Villarreal was 6-15 with 1 HR, 4 RBIs and a .528 OBP and Erica Robles was 5-15 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs this weekend.

The future is bright with this program. Next season will be the first roster entirely made up of players recruited by Coach Hurlman.

CaliURIfan,
You are so right
Becca Rogers should get A10 Player of the Week for her efforts at Patriots Point South Carolina
In just 3 days time Rogers went 3-0 giving up only 2 runs in 19 innings. Included a win over P5 NC State plus victories over Marist and Bryant

Rhody’s Top 3 hitters are Freshmen and 5 of their Top 6 hitters are Freshmen.
Amazing recruiting class!!

Coach Hurlman has made a point of recruiting nationally, while also still working hard to recruit in her back yard. Her predecessor only recruited regionally. Next season’s recruiting class is talented also.

Yes,

Absolutely fantastic!!!!

In three starts, Rogers was 3-0 with a 0.74 ERA in 19.0 innings of work at the Charleston Invitational. She pitched a one-hit shutout against the ACC's North Carolina State on Friday. On Saturday, she carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Marist, and on Sunday she pitched 6.0 shutout innings against Bryant. For the week, Rogers had 23 strikeouts against just six walks. She allowed two earned runs and seven hits in 19.0 innings.

In five games at the Charleston Invitational, Villarreal batted .400 (6-for-15) with one home run, one double, four runs scored, four RBI, four walks and two stolen bases. She had a .526 on-base percentage, reaching safely in 10 of her 19 plate appearances. The Cypress, Texas, product helped lead Rhode Island to four wins in five games.

Rhody guts out a 5-4 win over University of Maryland - Baltimore County in their first game of the Maryland Invitational. Becca Rogers continues her great work in the circle, allowing one earned run and striking out 9 in a complete game effort. The freshman trio of Sami Villarreal, Faith Musselwhite and Ari Castillo accounted for 3 of Rhody's four hits and Castillo's homerun in the seventh proved to be the game winner.

The ladies play University of Maryland at 5:30pm to close out day 1.

Despite three home runs, Rhody’s win streak ends at 4. They battled Big 10 Maryland, but came up short, falling 6-4. Sami Villarreal hit her second round tripper of the season, and Susan Harrison hit the first two home runs of her career. Freshmen had all six of Rhody’s hits.

Day two of the Invitational consists of games against Drexel and Villanova.

Rhody Softball moves to 3-1 in the Maryland Invitational (9-10 overall) with two wins today, taking game 1 12-6 over Drexel and 5-3 over Villanova in the 2nd game. This team continues to grow and impress this season. Offensively, Rhody banged out 22 hits on the day, to bring their season batting average to .266 (the team hit .205 last season). Additionally, the team has banged out nine home runs in four games this weekend, bringing their season total to 15 (last season's squad had 14 all season). This weekend, freshman Susan Harrison is breaking out of an early season slump, going 5-15 with four home runs and eight RBIs so far.

Tomorrow, they take on St. Peters at 12:30pm to attempt to even up their record at 10-10. By the way, they had 12 wins all of last year.

Go Rhody!!!

Great way to end the weekend, pounding out another 13 hits to take a 8-0 run rule win against St. Peters this morning. Susan Harrison kept up her red hot weekend, going 2-3 with two more RBIs. She has to be in the running for A10 player of the week, maybe rookie of the week. The freshman from Arcadia, Ca went 7-18 on the weekend with 4 home runs and 10 RBIs. Sarah Gunderson was masterful in the circle today, allowing one-hit and striking out 7 for a five-inning complete game shutout.

Rhody moved their record to 10-10. To put this season's start into perspective, when the team won it's 10th game last season, it made their record 10-25.

This week, Rhody opens their home schedule with a Wednesday game against Brown at 4:45pm. They then open A-10 play on the road as they travel to St. Joseph's for three games.

Off to a great start this year. Hopefully this carries over to the A-10 and they get back into the Atlantic 10 tournament for the first time in many years. UMass and Fordham will again be the favorites but be nice for Rhody to make some noise and grab one of the tournament slots.

for the 3rd week in 4 weeks of the young season, URI gets a Freshman of the week.....

http://www.atlantic10.com/ViewArticle.d ... =211796179

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Massachusetts senior Kaycee Carbone was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Week while George Mason junior Bekah Ansbro was named Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. Rhode Island’s Ari Castillo and Saint Louis’ Kristi Stevenson shared Rookie of the Week honors. The awards are based off performances from March 11-17.

In five games at the Maryland Invitational, Castillo batted .600 (9-for-15) with two home runs, one double, 10 runs scored and five RBI while leading Rhode Island to a 4-1 record. The shortstop from Fresno, Calif., had at least one hit and one run scored in all five games and had three multi-hit games. She scored at least twice in four of the five games. Castillo also drew six walks over the weekend and had a .714 on-base percentage, reaching safely in 15 of her 21 plate appearances.

This freshman class has been pretty impressive so far. Five of the top six hitters (according to batting average) are freshman and they have hit 12 of the team's 15 HRs. Erica Robles (Junior) is the other top offensive player right now. Next year's class brings will bring in some more speed, another powerful bat, and some solid young pitching to add to our experienced staff.

It is pretty impressive what Coach Hurlman has been able to do in a short time, basically starting from scratch. Now, if we can just somehow get a decent facility :).

URI plays their first Home Game today at 4:45pm vs Brown
Record now 10-10 is URI’s best record through 20 games in 15 years
A win today would be the best record through 21 games in 21 years

We have 15 home runs through 20 games with the highest ever for a season being 32. We have 30 games left to play regular season

12 of the 15 HRs are from 4 Freshmen who continue to play better and better. 5 of our top 6 batting averages are Freshmen

The Freshman of the week in the A10 has gone to a URI Freshman in 3 of the first 4 weeks. And to 3 different URI Freshmen :D

3 big games this weekend at St Joseph’s to open A10 conference play

Our Coach is entering her 3rd season here at URI. Exciting season in the making as we enter A10 play.

Hiring the right coach is everything at the college level.

Gets proven every day. The women's softball program was an eyesore not too long ago.

Thorr track record of hiring coaches is getting better. Needs a home run hire for women's BB though.

Rhody beats Brown 3-0 this afternoon to pick up their ninth win in the last 11 games. Sarah Gunderson was once again masterful in the circle, scattering five hits and had five Ks over her complete game shutout. Ari Castillo and Susan Harrison each had run scoring doubles to lead the offense.

Their 11-10 is the best record after 21 games since 1998.

Rhody travels to St Joseph this weekend to open A-10 play.

I totally agree. That being said, last year, Becca Rogers had a 2.57 ERA and was still 3-14. The offense last year hit .205 and scored 2.36 runs a game. So far this season, they are hitting .275 and averaging 4.05 runs per game.

My point being, even dominating pitching needs at least a run or two to win :).

Rhody falls short today against St. Joe's, 2-1. Becca Rogers threw her butt off today, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs in six innings. Both offenses struggled to get going in this one, with all the runs scored in the sixth inning. Susan Harrison crushed her team leading 5th HR top of the inning, and then the Hawks came back to score two in the bottom of the inning. Rhody had their opportunities, stranding 7 runners on the day, including a bases loaded, no out situation in the second.

http://www.gorhody.com/sports/w-softbl/ ... 0323n3bf0l

Let's see if the offense can get going in tomorrow's double header. Both games will be shown on ESPN+, with the first game starting at 12:00pm.

Well, Rhody softball had one of those days you need to forget as a sports team. They lost both ends of a double header by a combined score of 25-1. Nothing went well, offense was limited, pitching struggled, and the team made five errors on the day. Definitely a day you have to forget all about and get back to work. Learn from this.

My first Rhody women’s softball game. St Bonnie up 9-2 after four and the Rams battle back to win 10-9 on a walk off three run bomb with two out in the bottom of the seventh. They got back in the game with a five run fifth that included a grand slam: wind was blowing out.
This has to be the game of the year. Rams showed a lot of fight and avoided a three game weekend sweep.

Yeah, there are some pretty horrendous records in the past. I do believe that this program is going in a positive direction. They have improved on wins this season (both overall and in conference), there is a young nucleus of offensive talent, good veteran pitching and a nice recruiting class coming in. I am hoping within a year or two they will make the A10 tournament.

Becca Rogers names A10 Pitcher of the Week
So very much deserved recognition!

From the A10 Article today:

In her lone start of the week, Rogers pitched a complete-game shutout of first-place Fordham to lead Rhode Island to a 1-0 victory. The Hubbardsville, N.Y., native allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out four batters. She ended her career tied for second place in program history with 370 strikeouts. It was the fourth complete-game shutout of the year for Rogers, and the fifth she has been a part of.

Re: 2019 Women’s Softball Season

Rhody softball took 1 of 2 from Fordham this weekend (1st win against Fordham since 2012) to finish off their season. 17-29 is their best record since 2012 and the first time with less than 30 losses since 2010. Their win totals increased by 5 overall and 3 in league from last season. Other positives from this season:

- Set program records in slugging percentage (.398), on-base percentage (.341) and home runs (33)
- Rhody also drew 139 walks, the second most in team history.
- Freshman Ari Castillo hit .392 which is the third-highest single-season batting average in team history, and fifth in the A-10 this year. She was also sixth in the league in homeruns with 8. She has to be in the running for Freshman of the year.
- Senior Becca Roger's 2.28 ERA was best in the A-10 and her 95 strikeouts and 10 wins were both good for sixth in league. Her 370 career strikeouts tied her for second in program history.
- Freshman Sami Villarreal was hitting .358 prior to her knee injury.
- The team batting average of .260 is a 55 point improvement over last season. The .341 on base percentage is a 56 point improvement

Considering the fact that during a considerable part of the season, the starting lineup included five freshman, I would say this was a successful season. With only losing four seniors (even though one is ace Becca Rogers), and bringing in another solid recruiting class this season, the future is bright for Rhody.

Ari Castillo named 2nd team all-conference and both she and Sami Villarreal were named to the all-rookie team. Bummed to not see Becca Rogers on the list, but still some good love for Rhody Softball.

Fordham wins A10 Tournament and goes to the NCAA Tournament
George Washington selected to play in the NIT

Fordham and GW had 1 more game to play for the A10 Championship but rain washed it out. Since Fordham won the League Regular Season Championship then they were awarded the A10 Tournament Championship as well. Strange but that’s how it works.

Hopefully URI can get to the NCAA Tournament in the next few years. Great group of Freshmen and another good recruiting class.
