Let’s hope it’s a QB that transferred from a top level FBS program!

Very rarely are freshman QBs ready to come in and make an impact... Darius' brother London played hoops at UVA and had a cup of coffee in the NBA.

According to 247 sports he's 5'11, 217 pounds, 2 star, 79 grade QB. Ranked 64th nationally for dual threat QB's.

His father, Mark, and his uncle, Kurt, both played for the Rams. Mark is URI Hall of Famer who earned All-Yankee Conference honors as a linebacker in 1984.

Is it just me or do the profiles of each new URI recruit offer more insight into what other programs were recruiting the eventual URI commit when compared to previous years? I’ve noticed this trend of including competitors during past signing periods, but not to the extent of 2019. Is this implying that the general coverage/availability of recuiting information/rating for D1 subdivision programs has increased or is it that the caliber of the average URI recruit has increased? Regardless I like the graphic displayed for each recruit. The photo, home state and write up and video...nice setup.

A small class is a good sign. Finally recovering from the "change" in conferences. I'm hoping they're not done and will bring in a transfer QB. Very inexperienced right now.

Love the Greek OL from Germany!

Seems like this class is heavily focused on back 7 defense and OL, plus the QB from Cali. No skill positions on offense (there is one TE, but I always assume our TEs will be effectively 2nd tackles that may run a stick route here or there on 3rd down) or D linemen thus far.

After signing four players in the new early signing period in 2017, Fleming signed no one early this year. Don't know what that means but kinda interesting.

Just guessing but if you sign guys up front, you might miss on guys that may have fell through from a higher level. Takes away the flexibility so you have to be sure about those early signings.

Perrantes is exciting!

Only because I know his brother was such a good player for Virginia basketball.

Too bad hes not the basketball equivalent of his brother and we signed him for basketball.... nonetheless could be a steal for us!

I looked back at the class they announced in Feb. 2017 (next season's juniors). Of the 18 players, 9 never played for URI best I can tell. Only three players have worked out so far: Tyler Burke (Md transfer; graduated), C.J. Karrick (FG kicker), Isaiah Coulter. Miles Gardea, juco LB played but never started.
Jury still out on: Ivory Frimpong (0 catches last year); Jahkari Grant (yet to play at QB); Emil La Marca (DE played in 7 games); Matt Pires (5 catches, 4 rushes); Tyler Wipper (LB, played in 10 games).

You would think this would be a key class for next year. Coulter will likely have a huge year, will be interesting to see if Grant and Frimpong contribute.

Have to disagree that only three from the class worked out.
- Two (Burke, Pires) have all-conference accolades
- Five (Burke, Carrick, Coulter, Denton, Miller) have been considered starters
- Three are guys who have redshirted and will see their roles continue to increase (Wipper, La Marca, Grant).
- Frimpong is one of the team's top special teams players on the coverage teams, and has a bright outlook for the next two seasons on offense. With a group like Parker, Coulter, Beauvais, Denny and Dorsey in front of him, it's more a matter of roster depth/opportunity for him.

Burke - 2-year starter, All-Conference
Carrick - has been the team's place kicker
Coulter - 60 catches, 816 yards, 4 TDs; very good No. 2 along side Parker at WR
Denton - was the punter as a true freshman, transferred after one season. He was very good, but wanted to be closer to home.
Frimpong - has played in 21 games in first two seasons. One of the team's top special teams players; expected to be a big contributor on offense
Gardea - Reserve LB, played on every special teams unit and even lined up as a fullback in several games on offense
Grant - Will battle for QB role. Has been the scout team QB for last two years
La Marca - Redshirted as a freshman, was regular part of D-Line rotation in 2018
Miller - 2-year starter on line, played in 18 games in his two seasons
Pires - All-Conference as a punt returner as a freshman, expected to be a big part of offense in 2018 but was limited by injury
Wipper - Redshirted as a freshman, played 10 games in 2018 and had 10 tackles, 4.5 TFLs. Role will continue to grow.

Great info Shane. Thank you.
It’s so helpful, it makes me want to ask can you do the same for last years class that was announced?
Plus any insight as to how you and the staff are feeling about this years class at this point in time?
Thanks for this past year - best year for URI Football in a while. Great to hear little to nothing about dropping the program for a change :D
Go Rhody!!

Other questions for Shane...are they targeting a transfer or 5th year QB?

Also a progress report on new coaching staff hires...it's already getting late in the game. Need staff fully in place by spring practice I would think.

Ramster,

In terms of the 2018 class, it was significant in that 12 freshman from the signing class were able to redshirt, with most of the class getting its feet wet with some experience, thanks to the new four-game rule. The thought is this should pay major dividends down the road. Here is a quick breakdown.

Arrington - redshirt, big future
Booker - grad transfer, started 10 games at right tackle before injury
Brown - Redshirt.
Campbell - Juco safety, part of rotation, started several games
Castillo - Juco LB, one of team's top defensive players. Started every game
Correia - Redshirt. Massive lineman. Expected to play eventually
Delasoudas - Redshirt. Got his feet wet in a couple games.
Dorsey - JuCO, All-Conference return man. One of the best returners Rhody has ever had
Erby - Redshirted, played in a game or two. They like him a lot.
Gorgas - Redshirted. Big future
Johnson - Redshirted. Played a lot of special teams in first four games.
Jones - JuCo, contributed right away in backfield
Lovell - Redshirted, got his feet wet
Makszin - Started as a true freshman. Major impact on DLine
McDonough - Redshirted. Will compete for time this year
Moak - JuCo LB, contributed on special teams units
Saks - Redshirt
Shelbred - Redshirt
Thompson - Redshirt. Very big future at tackle
Warren - Played every game as a true freshman on special teams.
Wells - JuCo D, started most of season and was big part of line rotation

Some of the new staff is in place, but there are various reasons they can't be announced yet. My understanding is that there remains some roster flexibility for later additions, particularly with the new transfer portal system. I can't really speak to specific targets, but there are a handful of roster openings.

Good class. Have met Fresilli and Brockwell and impressed.
Hate to put if odd on one position, but where URI has lacked is QB until last year.
Lawson went from mediocre to pro prospect and Vito from 3rd string to good in one off season.
They like Grant. A big part of it will be how hard those two work in off season.
Fleming and staff work hard at recruiting.

"Worked out" was poor wording on my part. But the players I have jury still out on is fair IMHO. Did Wipper leave team?

Heard the team looks good in spring ball so far.
Huge up front.
I think Rhody has talent to win,how hard do they want to work?

I'd be disappointed if the O line doesn't dominate the line of scrimmage. Hoping the new coach kicks some butt and gets the best out of that experienced group. Then everything becomes possible on offense.
