Diamond Head Classic

Unread post by Obadiah »

I thought the tournament warrants a thread separate from Games of Interest thread.

The Diamond Head Classic is being held at the Stan Sheriff Center, the home court of the U. of Hawaii and located on their campus in Manoa. The center, constructed in 1994, seats 10,300 and is named after the UH Athletics Director who lobbied for its construction.

The tournament will play out over three days with the opening round on Saturday, semifinals on Sunday, then Christmas Eve off and the finals on Christmas Day, 9 PM ET. This is a fully bracketed tournament, so all six teams will see three games of action and one team will go home with the crown and another will go home winless. Given the 5 hour time difference between the East Coast and Hawaii, all times noted in this thread will be ET.

Saturday, December 22 Schedule:

Game #1 Indiana State versus Colorado, 3 PM. On ESPNU

Game #2 UNLV versus Hawaii, 5 PM. On ESPNU.

Game #3 Rhode Island versus Bucknell, 10 PM. On ESPN3.

Game # 4 TCU versus Charlotte, 12:30 AM. On ESPN3.

This is the truth! The north end of Scarborough has a terrible seaweed problem and we called it “Stinky Beach” as kids.

The entire selection process is so subjective that all measures are of equal meaning, or meaninglessness, depending on your view. It's not like they use them to pick the field...they pick the field first and then (sometimes) use the measures they want to justify it. See: Syracuse, almost every year.

NET
So I guess RJ needs to adjust his quadrants. Because based on NET, pc will play 7 Q1, 7 Q2 and 4 Q3 games in conference based on today's NET.

Game #2 is in the books as UNLV defeats host Hawaii, 73-59. The game was close for the first half, but UNLV broke it open in the second stanza. UNLV will now take on Indiana State in a semifinal game Sunday at 4:30 PM. Game will be on ESPN2.

Game #3 is complete and URI unexpectedly is headed to the consolation round with the loss to Bucknell. The Rams will play the loser of TCU-Charlotte game at 12:30 AM tomorrow, actually Dec 24 ET. Unfortunately no matter the outcomes the next two URI games will be televised on ESPNU channel with its limited availability.

Game #4 which pitted the highest ranked tournament team against the worst is now complete as TCU easily defeated Charlotte, 82-57, in a game the Horned Frogs never trailed.

Reviewing the Saturday's game action, most of the games were easily decided with the URI game being the closest. It also was the biggest upset.

The loss to Bucknell in a tournament is somethings more than a regular loss because of the domino effect of tournaments . Instead of facing top level TCU, where even if we lose there is lots of upside potential, now instead we get to play Charlotte and there is no upside to this game, only a downside and a severe one at that if URI should lose. That would quickly turn the trip to Paradise into one of horror.

Game #5, Semifinal #1, is now in the books as Indiana State beats UNLV, 84-79. Indiana State never trailed in game and had a 10 point lead with 5 minutes left before UNLV made a run to cut the margin to one with a minute left, but the Rebels could not go further. Indiana State now moves to the Championship game.

Would this mean URI, should it beat Charlotte, then face Hawaii on its own homecourt? That would make getting two wins in HI much more difficult. It would also mean URI played no name teams in the tourney and likely not help the sos.

You are right. If URI beats Charlotte we get Hawaii. If URI loses to Charlotte we meet Colorado and a chance to be the winless team in the tournament. Was not impressed with the field in this tournament from the get-go. Why travel 5000 miles, incur the expense and spend the Christmas holiday away from family and friends to play Bucknell, Charlotte et al. Last year we went 120 miles and got Seton Hall and Virginia. This is just the capper on what I thought was an awful OOC schedule, not so much the level of opponents, but the lunacy of the logistics - the small number of home games, the 33 day gap between the last two home games in the OOC, playing a very weak team at home and then playing strong one on the road 8 days later, etc. . Doesn't make sense when you have several young, inexperienced players.

Game #7 results, TCU beat Bucknell, 82-65. After a close first half where Bushnell scored 41 points, TCU tightened its defenses in the second stanza to limit the Bisons to only 24 points.

As reported in another thread, URI beat Charlotte in Game #8, 75-61. URI never trailed in the game.

Crappy opponents, poor tv exposure, bad start times, playing a team on its home court, long travel, inconsistent play by team, loss to lower level team, etc... This tournament has pretty much sucked for URI and its fans in nearly all aspects except for the non game time spent in HI that those who traveled there got.

For a team that won’t make the NCAA tournament there’s tremendous value having them spend a week together in a beautiful location - regardless of exposure/timing/travel. The players like it. Continue growing and gelling as a team for A10 schedule.

If they had won the first game and again tomorrow, it would be the greatest thing ever.
It's a good trip for them to get away together...not seeing any real downside.

A little Dr. McGillicuddy's in your coffee today will probably help out. FA LA LA LA LA!

ETA: And at least they don't have to wait a week between games.

I'll join in the glass half full side of the discussion [I know I know that's unusual for me but fuck it] and say that we still have a chance to end up 8-4 with a win tomorrow and an expected win next Sunday to close out the OOC portion of the schedule.

This group will drive us nuts sometimes but it's the way it is, and will be for a while longer.

These are the last five tournaments that URI has played in. This year's Diamond head Classic, by all measures ranks worst except for those getting off time in HI. Diamond Head provides no home games and one less contest than the maximum allowed. It is the only tournament where URI played no P5 or Big East teams. It is the only tourney where URI had to play an opponent on its home court.

URI Tournament Participation Last Five Years

2018 Diamond Head Classic - three games all in HI - two neutral site - one at opponent
Bucknell/Charlotte/Hawaii

2017 NIT Season Tip-Off - three games - two home - two neutral site (Brooklyn)
UNC-Asheville/Seton Hall/Virginia
* URI refused a 4th game vs non D1 team

2016 HOF Tip-Off - two home - two neutral (Mohegan Sun)
Marist/Brown/Cincinnati/Duke

2015 Cancun Challenge - four games - two home - two neutral site (Cancun)
Cleveland State/TCU/Maryland/Rider

2014 Orlando Classic - three games in FL - three neutral site
Kansas/Santa Clara/Georgia Tech
