Week #2 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

No A-10 teams are ranked in the Top 25 or are getting votes in the other category. The new NET system apparently is not operational at this time and given that rankings this early in season are suspect anyway that may be a good thing.

FWIW and to show how variable such rankings can be, here are some URI rankings as of today:

Pomeroy - 106
Sagarin - 59
BPI - 128 In this rating system, URI ranks # 8 among A-10 schools, just one spot ahead of Duquesne

Monday night action in the A-10:

Monmouth at Saint Joseph's. A campus game in the Myrtle Beach Invitational, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

St. Bonaventure at Niagara, 7 PM. Big rivalry game for the Bonnies who are seeking revenge for Niagara upsetting them in last year's opening game. On ESPN+.

Bowling Green at VCU. A regional game in the Legends Classic, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

Illinois-Chicago at Duquesne. A campus game in the Gotham Classic, 8 PM. On ESPN+.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

Middle Tennessee at Belmont, 8 PM.

Other games:

Vermont at #1 Kansas. Campus game in the NIT Season Tip-Off, 9 PM. On ESPN2.

Watching VCU game and St Joes game on ESPN+. Streaming is good and announcers are good.
VCU is up 9 at half and St Joes is up 6.

The first half of the St. Joseph's - Monmouth game saw some pretty bad shooting, but the Hawks came out fast in the second half and were able to overcome the bad shooting (41% FG, 24% 3PT, 68%FT) with good ball control and domination of the glass to win by 15, 78-63.

Incredible comeback by Duquesne to tie game with UIC, 80-80, and send into OT. Duquesne trailed most of the game by 8-12 points, but this changed with a Sincere Carry three pointer at the 2+minute mark. Carry then continued his heroics to bring the Dukes to 80-78 on lay-up with 11 seconds left. Carry then stole the ball with 8 seconds left and proceeded to get another layup to tie game with one second to spare. In the early OT, Duquesne has taken its first lead.

The Dukes squeeze one out beating UIC, 89-88 OT. What a great way to spend a rainy evening watching several games on ESPN+ and you get replays with the service!!

Duquesne wins by one. Poor execution by UIC late in OT. Down 2 with 18 seconds left. Not sure what they went over in the time out but the G drives to the basket then throws it OB in the corner. They get it back with 6 seconds left down three and another G drives and svores 2 at the buzzer. He thought they were down 2.

St Joe's and VCU were looking pretty good.

St Joe's missed a ton of good looks in the first half.
They move the ball very well and when they hit their shots they are really good. Jacked up a lot of threes.

VCU looked very athletic, as usual. Played with a lot of energy. They just dont have anybody that's established themselves as a top A-10 player yet.

Both of those teams won't be easy for us to beat.

Sincere Cherry has 17 assists in 2 games and only 1 Turnover - just a freshman from Salon Ohio and in the starting line up

Vs UIC he played 38 minutes, 13-20 FGs, 3-6 on 3GFs, 3-5 FTs, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals, 1 block, 1 TO, 1 Foul for 32 points. Forget Freshman of the Week, he could be A10 Player of the Week

Funny thing this recruiting is. He had no other Division I offers to my knowledge. And if you watch the A10 Basketball Media Day on the ESPN+ app, when interviewing Keith Dambrot he joked that Duquesne wanted him but not for this year. He said it was a long story that he did not get into, but it looks like they wanted him to prep for a year and something changed.

By the way, Media Day on ESPN+ only had the morning session. Coach Cox was on in the afternoon and was interviewed with Ashley Howard. Has anybody seen the afternoon session on ESPN+ or anywhere else?

It's still early but KenPom likes the A10 more this year than last year, to date.
Last year the A10 in his rankings had 4 200+ teams and 7 total 150+ teams.
Again still early, but the A10 in his rankings has 2 200+ teams and 4 total teams 150+.

Wednesday action in the A-10:

In a game already completed, Richmond easily defeated St. Francis (Brooklyn), 88-66. The Spiders steadily built a lead in this game form the beginning and got balanced scoring from their starting five led by Nick Sherod's 22 points. The game started at 11 AM and drew a crowd of 6,581 some 95% of capacity. That is some loyal fan base for a small school like Richmond with their lackluster teams of recent seasons.

La Salle at Florida, 7 PM. On SECN+.

In the OOC:

St. Peter's at Bryant, 7 PM.

Other games:

#8 Michigan at #18 Villanova in a Gavitt Tip-Off Game, 6:30 PM. On FS1.

Far be it from me to question KenPom, but my guess is this won't be the case when a larger sample size builds up.

And if anyone wants to take note of what happens to a team who has a lot of Freshmen and a few returners adjusting to new roles check Nova getting throttled by Michigan. And Nova is the gold standard. So let’s all exercise patience with the 2018-19 Rams

Bids will be left on the table from the A10,AAC and Big East this year who are all weaker than they were last year. My guess is a stronger ACC and SEC will snatch up those bids.

tough Night for Dave Gavitt in the Gavitt games:
BE starts the season with only one Top 25 Ranked team in Villanova, then Marquette gets in at #24 but gets crushed by Indiana 96-73. Indiana was favored by 6.

Nebraska crushes Seton Hall 80-57. Nebraska was favored by 8.
#18 Michigan crushes #8 Villanova 73-46. Villanova was favored by 6.5 points.

In a league full of flawed teams, St Joe's is the most complete team. Experience, good guards, lights out 3 pt shooter and a serviceable big man.
Add in Martelli's coaching and their gimmicky zone defense and they are my bet to take 1st place this year in the league.

Northeastern in an easy win over Alabama in the Charleston Classic. Northeastern never trailed in the game building a 11 point half time. The Huskies were led by their senior guard from Serbia, Vasa Pusica, who put in 20 points and was four for four on treys.

Kellan Grady is not POY in the A10. Not even looking for his shot. Two points in the game with 1:30 left.
He just had a wide open three - airball. 1-11. Playing on CoC court. Same shooting woos as Fatts on the same court.

Jon Axel with 33 points. Scoring their last 12 points. Davidson wins 57-53

I don't get your point. Yea, Grady had a bad 3 point shooting night like Fatts, but the difference with comparing the two is that last year Grady in 18 conference games put in 44 treys on 38% shooting as opposed to Fatts' 14 treys on 21% shooting. Of course, Grady got way more PT than Fatts, but he did hit at a higher rate.

After struggling through the first half and well into the second, #21 TCU found its bearing to squeeze by Fresno State, 77-69.

Despite some bad shooting and 18 turnovers, West Virginia pulled away from Monmouth in the second half in Myrtle Beach Invitational, winning, 71-53.

Nothing serious. I was just pointing out that both games were on the College of Charleston court this week. Funny, that’s all.
What surprised me about Grady was how he didn’t look for his offense at all. He took 4 shots in the second half.
He is a potential lottery pick and concensus A10 preseason POY and he didn’t want the ball.

I know basketball is the one of the most insignificant things about what’s going on, but San Franciso had to cancel its home game against Arizona State due to air quality. I think Pepperdine did as well. Absolutely terrrifying and so sad what’s happening there.

Charlie Brown is a joy to watch, glad he’s back healthy and effective.

I kind of expected UConn-Iowa and Syracuse-Oregon but probably the other way around. At some point, UConn will have to work in Wilson and Diarra when they come back. There’s quality depth there, which makes all the difference in a “rebuild.”
