2018-19 Prediction Contest Summary

96 participants are in this year's contest just one below the record participation of the 2016-17 season. Both Seawrightspostgame and ramster offer the most bullish predictions at 25-5. ramster moves to the top with his best A-10 record of 15-3. On the distaff side, the only poster predicting a losing season is Billyboy78.

The most popular record was 18-12 with 21 predictions followed closely by 19-11 with 20 picks.

For readibility, I have clustered the predictions, first by overall record, then by A-10 record, and then by teams scoring sequenced from highest to lowest. Please review summary and let me know if there are errors because juggling all these numbers causes some eyeball deformation.

......being in the Debbie Downer territory is worth and comment......loosing all those seniors, their scoring punch, court leadership......freshmen being players to come along, apparently none out of the box ready for immediate impact, not projects, but all need development......new coach, ups and downs leads me to a 500 season....

My reasoning for the losing record is young teams tend to struggle on the road. There are a lot of games away from the RC this year. I hope I'm wrong. That being said, I think this team will be really good next year.

While I hope Ramster wins the contest, I too tempered my prediction thinking the freshmen all need seasoning. The game at Charleston should tell us a lot.

My biggest difference with you and the previous poster is I just don't see us having a losing or 500 record in the A10. Didn't see it before the season started and damn sure not seeing it after the bad start

I picked 20-10 with a 12-6 A10 record. That should be the see-saw. Do better and make the NCAAT, worse and maybe an NIT bid. But a losing record? No way in hell.

If we're thinking that next year can potentially be a special year, then I don't think there is any way that we can finish with a losing record this year. Jumping from a losing record to a run in the tournament would be very surprising. Most likely is we go from a NIT berth/being on the NCAA bubble this year to a potential threat in the tournament during the 2019-2020 season.

Sure, things look dire at the moment , but I just don't see this team finishing below .500 . I remember how everyone
was feeling 2 seasons ago when they had just lost to both Lasalle and Fordham at home . The team immediately turned
it around to go on an 8-0 run and won the A 10 tournament. I can see a very sharp turn around coming . Stay tuned and
don't give up on this team yet . They WILL start hitting shots, and then confidence will build and their natural talent will
take over . They couldn't buy a hoop at PC and yet they were able to hang in somehow. Their time is coming. BELIEVE IT !!

I was a casual URI basketball observer until last year, when my daughters began their freshman year. I attended just about every home game and the A10 tournament and saw up close what an experienced team can do, despite my frustration with the stagnant offense at times and some unimaginative late game sets in close games. However, I also
believed that the team would take a step back this season. You can’t lose that much and not have it effect you the next season. I entered the contest and predicted 15-15 and 9-9. I’ve been stating since last spring that a 9-9 league record and a 7th to 9th place finish would be ok with a team that lost that much through graduation, not to mention new coach that had never had a head coaching job at the collegiate level. I looked at what Dayton and VCU did last year before I made my predictions. These are two schools on par with URI over the past five years and they finished 8th and 9th last year, as they have also had transition with players and coaches over the past couple of years.
That said, I thought the offense would look better than it has so far. I also thought we’d be getting a little more from the freshmen, even though I’ve been reminding people that they are not Duke or Kentucky freshmen.

From a box office perspective, Cooley’s comments last year somewhat downplaying his program’s rivalry with the Rams seemed rather tone deaf.

Games with URI represent the last six non-conference home sellouts for Providence. Saturday’s overflow crowd of 12,997 included some folks who paid in excess of $100 on the street for tickets and upwards of double that price to online vendors.

Yes, elimination before the conference season starts has occurred several times, most recently in the 2016-17 contest when Rhody74 with a 28-2 prediction was eliminated when URI suffered its third loss in the PC game of 12/3. I believe that was the earliest elimination ever.

With the completion of the OOC schedule and the Ram's 7-5 record, 43 of the original 96 bettors have been eliminated from the contest because they did not have the correct OOC record. Of the 53 bettors remaining in contest, 41 had the correct 7-5, two others had an incorrect record, but because they were the only bettor in their overall record cluster, they move forward, and 10 others advance because no one in their cluster had the correct OOC record, but theirs was the closest. I know that may be as clear as mud, but it works!

The following is a simplified list - overall record first and A-10 record for each bettor, noting those that have been eliminated based on OOC record. All future eliminations will come from this list. Let me know if you spot any errors.
