They are beautiful, and I'd love one here at URI, but like you said we all have our priorities. As awesome as they look, they also seem pretty damn pathetic. How can you have that much invested in high school athletics?

Re: Another New Texas High School Football Stadium
High School football is important to people in Texas, so it's hard for people in RI to be able to relate to that sort of expenditure. But down there, that's what is important to people. Those are events that people in the town want to go to. The whole town pretty much shuts down to go to the HS football game. Allen is unique in that it's only 30 minutes north of Dallas, but there are plenty of towns in Texas that are hours away from any major city.
For example, Permian was the scene of the movie/book Friday Night Lights. The closest "sports" team to Permian would be Texas Tech, which is two hours away. Someone could travel 5 hours to a Spurs/Mavs/Stars/Rangers game. They could drive 5 1/2 hours to go see Baylor basketball/football or Texas basketball/football. That's what allowed football to grow so much in those areas and why it's so important and why local areas invest like they are college/professional teams.
I don't think people in this area realize how blessed we are to have 5 professional sports teams and several major colleges (at least for basketball) within an hour/hour and a half, and if you extend the range to Permian level with 5 hours of travel, you could see just professional sporting events of the Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Flyers, 76ers, Eagles, Phillies and whatever MLS teams play in that area. That's not including any of the high-level local colleges.

We can't build a professional baseball stadium, never mind college football stands.

Exactly, because he told his dad: I DON'T WANT YOUR LIFE. I probably watched this movie a million times in high school.
